Surabat was a tiny settlement in the Surabat River Valley on the Outer Rim planet Batuu. It was a beautiful location, but wild, remote, and isolated with harsh weather conditions, including most days being windy and the winter seasons being snowy. The vicinity was surrounded by valleys, giant spires and mountains. During the war between the First Order and the Resistance, the town had few modern conveniences.
Housing in the vicinity included apartment buildings built into large spires that could house several families, large houses that were occupied by single families. There were also small houses made of wood and mud similar in design to the architecture found in Black Spire Outpost, some of which underground rooms.
Local legends claimed that Surabat was the location where several children were known to have disappeared decades before, however residents were rarely known to discuss the event with outsiders.
The residents of Surabat were strong, hardy and reserved individuals who built their homes nestled against the base of the giant spires and mountains that surrounded the settlement. Many came from families involved in crop farming and raising livestock.
A large number of residents were involved in the dangerous work of harvesting the Golden Lichen that grew on the spires near their homes, although some of the inhabitants traveled an hour away by transport into Black Spire Outpost for work. Those that commuted met each day at the vicinity's depot and boarded a shuttle belonging to Oga Garra, who owned Oga's Cantina in the outpost. Once the work day was over, the shuttle would also carry the residents home.
Surabat was created as part of the backstory for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, a theme park land that opened to guests on May 31, 2019 at Disneyland Park, and August 29, 2019 at Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World.
