During his time residing in the Hutt's opulent palace located on the desert planet Tatooine, Fain indulged in gambling, finding amusement in wagering on the survival duration of those unfortunate enough to be fed to Jabba's rancor. In 4 ABY, Fain was present within Jabba's Palace when Rebel Alliance leader Leia Organa arrived with the express purpose of liberating her comrade, the smuggler Han Solo, from his imprisonment within its walls.

As the year 4 ABY arrived, Fain had severed his ties with the Empire and transitioned into the role of a smuggler, serving the infamous crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Jabba's operations were based out of his lavish palace situated on the planet Tatooine. While employed by Jabba, Fain also engaged in gambling, particularly enjoying placing bets on the lifespan of individuals unfortunate enough to be thrown into the pit containing his rancor. Around that time, Fain found himself as a passenger on the Hutt's extravagant luxury sail barge, the Khetanna.
During 4 ABY, Leia Organa, a leader within the Alliance, disguised herself as the bounty hunter known as Boushh. She arrived at the palace accompanied by the Wookiee Chewbacca, with the objective of rescuing her ally, the smuggler Han Solo, from Jabba's control. As night descended, Fain was among those sleeping within the Hutt's audience chamber when Organa freed Solo. She attempted to escape with him, but their efforts were thwarted, leading to their capture and subsequent imprisonment.

Thul Fain made his initial appearance in the 1983 film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, where he was featured as an uncredited background character in the scenes set within Jabba's Palace. His name was first officially recognized in the 1998 Jabba's Palace Limited expansion set for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game.
