Trinto Duaba first appeared in the cantina scene of the Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (1977). His mask was a reuse of a pre-existing design from the makeup artist Rick Baker's inventory. This design, known as "Terminal Man," was an attempt to create an original take on Frankenstein's monster. The character was assigned the name of Trinto Duaba in sources that are part of Star Wars Legends.
Unsubstantiated fan theories placed Salo Gardner as the actor for Trinto Duaba in A New Hope due to the actor's similar appearance to the character (despite the fact that Duaba's appearance was achieved by a mask and not makeup). When Salo Gardner later appeared as a character in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens (2015), news sites erroneously made the connection to Trinto Duaba based on the disproven myth. When Gardner's new character was featured in LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Complete Locations (2016) the character was officially identified as Trinto Duaba. This is likely a situation where an official author unintentionally implements a fan idea, due to mistakenly believing it to already be official canon.
