The name Singer is actually a pen name used by the author Peter Lerangis. The name "A. L. Singer" is, in fact, an anagram of the name "Lerangis".
Peter Lerangis was born in August of 1955 in Brooklyn, New York. His family relocated to Freeport, New York for his schooling, which he credits with sparking his creative imagination and aiding in his fiction writing. His initial published work appeared under a pseudonym in his school's newspaper, called "Flashings". Subsequently, he gained admission to Harvard University, where he pursued a degree in biochemistry. Following his involvement in a cappella singing with the Harvard Krokodiloes, where he served as their musical director, and his participation in several university theatrical productions, he initially intended to attend law school. However, he later abandoned law school to dedicate himself to musical theater, ultimately performing lead roles in productions of West Side Story, Cabaret, and Fiddler on the Roof at a regional theater. He later obtained a position as an editor, thus juggling three professions: acting, writing, and editing.
Following his marriage to Tina deVaron, the birth of their son Nick prompted him to transition to full-time writing. He worked as a ghostwriter for numerous series, including "The Hardy Boys," "Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Supermysteries," and "The Three Investigators." He is the author of several well-known book series, such as "Watchers," "Antartica," and "Spy X." His primary focus has been on writing novels aimed at children and young adults, including titles like "Smiler's Bones." Furthermore, he collaborated with other authors on "The 39 Clues" series, which achieved New York Times bestseller status. He later released "The Sword Thief," which became Amazon's 5th best-selling children's book in 2009. Lerangis is also known for his New York Times Bestseller series, "The Seven Wonders." In 2013, he received the Schneider Award for his novel "Somebody, Please Tell Me Who I Am."
