A.J. was a Jedi Knight of the Jedi Order, and a female, during the era before the Clone Wars across the years. Having successfully completed her training and passed the assessments set by Kirlocca, her lightsaber instructor, she studied at the Academy on Almas.
During the years that preceded the Clone Wars, A.J. was a young woman who was taught under the experimental system of the Almas Academy. She received instruction in lightsaber techniques from the well-known lightsaber combat instructor Kirlocca. A.J. displayed a strong interest in learning the techniques of dual lightsaber combat, and this passion led to many questions from the Jedi Council stationed at the academy. When it was time for her to go through the Jedi Trials, the Council questioned her motivations for studying this particular combat form. She explained that she wanted to improve her skills to protect others and that she wasn't using dual blades to intimidate, which satisfied the Council. As a result, they allowed her to continue her training, and she eventually became a Jedi Knight. A.J. was later referenced in the Jedi training manual called Padawan's Resource Guide, which highlighted her unusual choice of lightsaber specialization.
