The Aalagar were a subspecies of the Bith, who are a sentient species originating from Clak'dor VII. These Aalagar resided on far-flung islands, cut off from other Bith populations. They innovated a communication method using knotted strings to express intricate symbolic meanings. The Dark Lady of the Sith, known as Lumiya, incorporated a string of Aalagar symbols into a collection of prophetic Sith tassels. She employed this collection to draw in Jacen Solo, whom she subsequently swayed to embrace the dark side of the Force.
The Aalagar represented one of the subspecies within the Bith race—other examples include the Y'bith—a sentient species known for their highly evolved craniopods.
The Aalagar pioneered a unique form of knot-tying, utilizing it to document their ancestral lineage—effectively creating "strings" of forebears. This practice gradually transformed into a more sophisticated communication system, capable of transmitting recorded thoughts and declarations.

The Aalagar inhabited isolated islands found on the planet named Clak'dor VII, situated within the Mayagil sector of the Outer Rim Territories. Due to a civil war among the Bith that occurred centuries before the Galactic Civil War, their homeworld underwent a transformation into a hazardous wasteland. Consequently, the Aalagar existed in seclusion, separate from the broader Bith population.
Leading up to the Second Galactic Civil War, the Dark Lady of the Sith Lumiya employed a knot string crafted by the Aalagar as a component of a collection of tassels containing prophecies concerning Jacen Solo. The Aalagar strand carried the message: "He will ruin those who deny justice." Lumiya strategically placed the series of tassels aboard Toryaz Station in 40 ABY, confident that Solo would be drawn to the artifact and, through deciphering its meaning, be led to her. Solo eventually secured a translation of the Aalagar symbology from Doctor Heilan Rotham originating from Lorrd. Anticipating that the tassels would guide Solo to Lorrd, Lumiya awaited his arrival on the planet. She initiated contact with him shortly thereafter, thus commencing a relationship that would ultimately steer him toward becoming the Sith Lord Darth Caedus.
Aaron Allston originated the Aalagar in his novel Legacy of the Force: Betrayal, which served as the inaugural book within the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force series.
