Anti-aircraft gun
During the Battle of Sarrish, battle droids can be seen operating an anti-aircraft weapon. Anti-craft turrets, also known as anti-aircraft artillery or anti-aircraft guns, were artillery placements used on battlefields, for example, Mygeeto, to eliminate airborne threats. They proved especially valuable when defending landing zones. Within the Grand Army of the Republic, clone troopers employed the shorthand "triple-A" to describe anti-aircraft artillery during the Clone Wars.
History
Early in the Clone Wars, an AA weapon was deployed for the protection of a Lucrehulk-class core ship. Delta Squad, a group of clone commandos, successfully destroyed this AA gun before proceeding to neutralize the core ship itself. During the Battle of Bespin, several more AA guns were positioned on platforms. The Bespin variant was employed to target approaching Vulture droids and MAF gunships from the Confederacy of Independent Systems, until battle droids seized control and turned them against Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptors and LAAT/is.
During the Battle of Utapau, they were also used against the 212th Attack Battalion and the 501st Legion. Two were positioned at the main hangar bay entrance of Unlimited Projection. Their primary function was to target LAAT/i gunships attempting to deliver reinforcements and assist in subduing the battle droid forces located inside. Members of the 501st Legion successfully destroyed the hangar's AA guns, while Obi-Wan Kenobi eliminated two additional turrets by disabling their control systems.
In the Galactic Civil War, both the Rebels and the Empire commonly used AA turrets to destroy aerial vehicles. Other factions, such as the Hutt Cartel, also made use of AA weaponry. The Empire capitalized on the advantages of AA with their AT-AA.
