An atlatl was a Gungan projectile launching tool designed for single-handed use. Constructed from a short length of non-conductive hardwood, it featured a cupped or slotted end. Functioning as an arm extension, it allowed a booma to be launched with significantly increased velocity and impact compared to a throw from the bare hand. Its most effective range was around 30 meters, but it could reach up to 100 meters. It could also function as a club in the absence of an energy ball.
The Gungan Grand Army's atlatls were fashioned from a naturally insulating timber by members of the Otoh Gunga Defense League.
In the real world, an atlatl is a device employed to propel spears over greater distances. This particular tool has been around for more than 25 millennia.
