Bar Neth

Bar Neth, sometimes written as Bar-Neth, was previously a desert planet situated within the Bar Neth system. This system is a quinary star system found in the Albarrio sector of the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories. By the year 4.3 ABY, Bar Neth had been transformed into a "Natural Wonderland" abundant with farmlands. The ambitious terraforming made Bar Neth a desirable place to reside and a popular destination for tourists from across the galaxy. During that time, the Star Tours travel company arranged excursions to Bar Neth as a component of their Frontier Vacation Package.

Description

Vast fields of crops were planted on Bar Neth

This planet, Bar Neth, resided in the Bar Neth system, which is a quinary star system located within the Albarrio sector of the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories. Its terrain was characterized by extensive ochre-colored cliffs, bluffs, and canyons. However, following a significant desert reclamation effort, flora was introduced into the planet's environment.

Consequently, the planet's ecosystem was revitalized by nature. Numerous wild cacti thrived on Bar Neth, and expansive groves of cultivated fruits stretched across the landscape, with harvesting machines and airborne lifters operating above. Scattered across the planet's surface were also occasional round desert dwellings. In its terraformed condition, Bar Neth was celebrated as a "Natural Wonderland" and a desirable location for habitation. Bar Neth's climate remained hot, with temperatures reaching as high as 38° Celsius. Even after the terraforming, the surface of Bar Neth was still susceptible to local dust storms, which could reduce visibility to as little as two kilometers.

History

The surface of the terraformed Bar Neth

Bar Neth was initially a barren wasteland, completely devoid of life. However, at some point before the emergence of the New Republic, a substantial project focused on arid-zone agriculture was initiated. A large number of labor droids diligently worked to convert Bar Neth into a verdant planet with abundant vegetation. Thanks to the new plant life and relaxing atmosphere, Bar Neth became one of the galaxy's most sought-after family vacation spots. The Carl Hodgesville Dude Ranch, various camping and safari locations, and a zero-gravity golf course were among the popular attractions and activities on the planet.

By the year 4.3 ABY, the interplanetary travel agency Star Tours included trips to Bar Neth as part of their Frontier Vacation Package. This package was prominently promoted in the company's spaceports using a video display device known as the "Tourscan," with narration provided by the droid announcer Dan Android.

Behind the scenes

Bar Neth was presented in the Tourscan by Dan Android at the Tokyo Disneyland Star Tours. The location and footage were actually repurposed from a location featured in the now-closed Epcot dark ride attraction Horizons, specifically the Mesa Verde segment that concluded the ride. The Mesa Verde segment of Horizons concentrated on the concept of arid-zone agriculture, even including a scent of fresh oranges during one part of the ride.

The models used for the three concluding segments of Horizons were designed, built, and filmed by David Jones, a special-effects expert who also worked on Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. According to Jones, the desert film involved an 86-foot model and represented the longest continuous sequence ever achieved with miniatures. Furthermore, to reduce costs, only one house was fully developed for the set. In the original Horizons ride, the plant groves being harvested consisted of laorange trees, also referred to as long orange trees.

The Star Tours attraction referenced the "Carl Hodgesville Dude Ranch," named in honor of Carl Hodges, the director of the Environmental Research Lab at the University of Arizona. He assisted the team working on the Mesa Verde segment in creating a futuristic yet believable environment. Hodges' research focused on developing extensive saltwater-irrigated farms along the world's desert coastlines.

Although the planet's name appeared as both "Bar Neth" and "Bar-Neth" on various screens of the Tourscan, Lucasfilm specifically requested that the version without a hyphen be used in Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Online Companion.
