Meena Tills, a female Mon Calamari visibly characterized by her barbels
Regardless of sex, Mon Calamari possessed tendril-like appendages that lined their mouth and chin; these are known as barbels, or colloquially as "chin tentacles." Some individuals, such as Prince Lee-Char, would adorn their barbels with decorative items. A single barbel on the chin was indicative of youth, giving older Mon Calamari a bearded appearance. Similarly, the Gungans native to Naboo developed fleshy chin whiskers as they aged.
