Senator Sano Sauro was Tarturi's political rival within the Senate. The two senators engaged in a fierce conflict regarding the reallocation of trade routes within the Andaran system in 25 BBY.
The disappearance of Tarturi's son, Gillam, led the Jedi High Council to task Jedi Padawans Anakin Skywalker and Ferus Olin, along with their respective Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Siri Tachi, with an investigation of the Leadership School and its students on Andara.
However, the truth was that Gillam himself, the senator's son, was the leader of a mercenary student group and orchestrated his own supposed abduction, even planning his own murder, all to exact revenge on his disappointing father. While Berm was a generally competent, if self-serving, politician focused on maintaining his power, his parenting abilities were evidently lacking, a fact not lost on his son and, as Kenobi noted, left much to be desired.
