Black Cavern

The Black Cavern, a sentient cave located on the Forest Moon of Endor, housed sun crystals. These crystals were occasionally the target of theft. In 3 ABY, the Ewok named Wicket Warrick inadvertently shattered the sun crystal that had served as a symbol for the Ewoks for approximately one hundred years. In an attempt to prove his bravery, Warrick ventured into the Black Cavern to find a replacement crystal. Unbeknownst to him, the Dulok Boogutt, also seeking a crystal, trailed him.

Within the cave's depths, Warrick located a sun crystal, but Boogutt managed to seize it first. Subsequently, the guardian of the sun crystal materialized, aiming to prevent their departure. Following an extended pursuit through the cave's passages, Warrick and Boogutt successfully escaped, only to discover that numerous Ewoks and Duloks had congregated at the cavern's entrance, hoping to rescue their respective young ones. However, the guardian forcibly pulled Boogutt back inside, prompting Warrick to rescue him, an act that resulted in the destruction of the newly acquired sun crystal.

Biography

Early usage and Wicket's failure

The sun crystal (far right) from the Black Cavern, prior to its destruction

On the Forest Moon of Endor, there existed a sentient cave known as the Black Cavern. The sun crystals resided there, and over the years, many had attempted, but rarely succeeded, in taking them. Roughly a century before 3 ABY, a group of Ewok warriors took one of the sun crystals from the Black Cavern as a test of courage, though many died during the endeavor. For the next hundred years, this crystal symbolized Ewok courage.

However, in 3 ABY, Wicket Warrick, a young Ewok scout, accidentally destroyed the sun crystal. Head Elder Kazak scolded him for destroying the Ewoks' symbol, which was decades old. Warrick overheard the elder telling Chief Chirpa that he believed the Ewoks' mission to the Black Cavern had been a true test of courage. He then chose to redeem himself by getting a new crystal from the cavern. Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka, Warrick's friend, found out that Warrick was not at fault for the crystal's breakage, and she hurried to tell him, only to find that he was already gone. She and another friend, Teebo, ran to Chirpa to inform him. He suggested consulting Logray, the medicine man, even though the shaman's viewing crystal had already shown him that both Warrick and Boogutt, the Dulok prince, had gone after the Black Cavern.

Wicket dares to enter

Wicket approaches the cavern.

When Warrick got to where the cavern was, he only saw a blank wall in the rock's side. Then, the Black Cavern showed itself and asked who wanted to come in. Warrick nervously said his name and explained that he was looking for a sun crystal. The cavern was interested in the scout's wish. It said that many had tried but few had succeeded, and that if the Ewok found a sun crystal, he would have to leave before the entrance closed. If he ran out of time, he would be stuck forever. Even though there could be bad results, Warrick felt he had to go in, and Boogutt followed, hoping to easily get a sun crystal. Once inside, Warrick had trouble finding his way because it was dark, but he eventually found a glowing spot, which he quickly realized was the crystal.

Boogutt was excited and ran toward what Warrick had found, showing that he was there and letting Warrick catch him. The Ewok was surprised to see the Dulok, who said that he was the one who had made Warrick break the first crystal. Before Warrick could get mad at the prince, Boogutt grabbed the new crystal and tried to run away with it. But then the guardian came out from under the ground and asked who dared to try and steal it. Boogutt tried to blame Warrick by throwing him the crystal and running toward the entrance. However, the guardian said that no one could leave, and the Dulok screamed in fear as he was chased. Warrick had the crystal in hand and found a new tunnel that the two could use to escape. He led Boogutt down it, hoping it would lead to the entrance.

Escaping… twice

Boogutt is drawn back into the Black Cavern.

Warrick and Boogutt ran down the tunnel and eventually came to a gorge. Several vines hung from the ceiling, letting them swing across. Boogutt was scared and didn't want to do it, but the guardian was getting close, so Warrick had to grab him and save him. The monster was still catching up, so the Ewok told Boogutt to run because the entrance was near and still open. At the same time, some Ewoks and Duloks had joined together to try and save their young from the cavern. They found the two being spit out by the Black Cavern's mouth. They started to celebrate their return, but they were quickly saddened when the guardian reached through the cavern's mouth and grabbed Boogutt, taking him back in.

The entrance also started to close, which put Boogutt's life in danger. Warrick was determined to help him, so he used the new sun crystal to keep the entrance open and get inside the cave. He found Boogutt holding onto a rock as the guardian tried to pull him in. The Ewok grabbed Boogutt's knife and stabbed the creature, making him let go of the young Dulok. Then, the two jumped out of the cave at the last moment, just as the cavern's mouth closed and crushed the sun crystal. The Duloks left, and King Gorneesh, Boogutt's father, was angry at his son for letting the Ewoks save him. Kazak was also there, and he praised Warrick for his courage that day. All the Ewoks then left the cavern to go home.

Personality and traits

The Black Cavern was ready to trap young Ewoks and Duloks inside the cave forever. It gave Warrick a choice of whether or not to come in, but at the same time, it shouted "Enter!" as if to try and get him to come in. The cavern was yellow on the outside and looked blank until it showed itself. Inside, there were many tunnels and pathways. Because the tunnels were dark, it was called the "Black Cavern."

Behind the scenes

The Black Cavern was in the thirteenth issue of the Ewoks comic series. David Manak wrote it, Warren Kremer drew it, and Marvel Comics published it on February 3, 1987. Before the comic came out, the Black Cavern was called the "Labyrinth of Black Caverns" in the forty-ninth issue of Marvel's Marvel Age magazine, which was published earlier that year.
