Founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman as a division of Marvel Entertainment, Marvel Comics has progressively evolved to become one of the world's biggest and most prosperous comic book publishers. While renowned for their contributions to the superhero genre, they also hold the distinction of being the initial company to produce comic books based on the Star Wars franchise, beginning with their Star Wars series, which spanned from 1977 to 1986. After regaining the rights in 2015, Marvel resumed its role as the primary publisher of Star Wars comics, with their most recent offering being the Star Wars 2020 series, which is currently in production.

Initially, Marvel operated as Timely Comics, known for publishing popular superhero stories. During the 1950s, under the name Atlas Comics, they primarily focused on other genres, including romance, crime, westerns, and war narratives. By the 1960s, the superhero genre experienced a resurgence in popularity, prompting the newly rebranded Marvel Comics to create a variety of new superhero titles, largely written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby. Throughout the 1970s, Marvel experienced declining sales and faced financial difficulties, partially attributed to ineffective distribution methods.
Toward the end of the 1970s, Charles Lippincott approached Marvel Comics President Stan Lee with a proposal to create a Star Wars comic as a promotional tool. Lee was initially hesitant about the project, considering the film was still in development, until his protege, Roy Thomas, convinced him otherwise. Even then, Lee, referencing the poor sales performance of comic book adaptations, stipulated a minimum sales quota of 100,000 copies before any royalties to Lucasfilm could be discussed.
The resulting series proved to be a tremendous success, starting in 1977 following encouragement from Roy Thomas, in addition to other emerging hits, such as The Uncanny X-Men and Daredevil. Jim Shooter, who served as Marvel's editor-in-chief from 1978 to 1987, later stated in an interview regarding the critical importance of Star Wars to the company's survival, "Star Wars single-handedly saved Marvel... And that kept us alive." The only drawback was that the 100,000 copy benchmark was quickly surpassed, enabling Lippincott to renegotiate royalty agreements from a position of strength.
Marvel also released stories in the UK under the Marvel UK label. Besides reprinting the American Star Wars comics, the UK series also developed a number of original stories.
Marvel continued its publication of Star Wars comics until 1986, and the Droids and Ewoks series until 1987. The comic book rights for Star Wars were subsequently acquired by Dark Horse Comics, which began producing Star Wars comics in 1991 with the release of Star Wars: Dark Empire. Dark Horse later reprinted a significant portion of the Marvel-produced Star Wars material under the title Classic Star Wars.
In 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel. Their former partner, Lucasfilm Ltd., followed suit three years later, when George Lucas sold the rights to his company to Disney.
On January 3, 2014, it was announced that the Star Wars comics license would transition from Dark Horse back to Marvel in 2015.
