Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2016)

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra is a series of comic book stories that debuted on December 7, 2016. Initially, the writing was handled by Kieron Gillen, who also penned Star Wars: Darth Vader. Briefly, he co-authored with Simon Spurrier, but Spurrier took over completely after Remastered. The series was first hinted at on September 19, 2016, and then formally revealed on October 12, 2016.

The narrative unfolds in the period separating Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, primarily within the galactic frontier, continuing the storyline from Star Wars: Darth Vader. The focus is on the main character, Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra, a "rogue archaeologist", along with her droid companions, the "murderbots" Triple-Zero and Beetee-One, the Wookiee bounty hunter Krrsantan, and Vulaada Klam, who becomes Aphra's sidekick later in the series.

Intended as the antithesis of Indiana Jones in terms of morality, the escapades of Aphra and her named crew offer a darker reflection of the adventures experienced by the heroes of the mainline series'.

The initial run concluded with its fortieth issue on December 11, 2019. A new series, under the same title, began in April 2020, written by Alyssa Wong and illustrated by Marika Cresta, continuing Aphra's story between Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.

Reception

In 2019, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra received a nomination for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book. The series was nominated again for the Outstanding Comic Book award in 2020 and won. Si Spurrier accepted the award at the 31st GLAAD Media Awards ceremony, held on July 30, 2020.
