Star Wars is a comic book series within the canon of Star Wars, initially crafted by writer Jason Aaron and artist John Cassaday. This Marvel Comics series, a reboot of the original Star Wars series, began its publication run on January 14, 2015. It chronicles the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 in the period between Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. The series reached its conclusion with issue 75, which was released on November 20, 2019, and was subsequently followed by the launch of another series of comics starting on January 1, 2020.
Jason Aaron received a call from Marvel's editor-in-chief, Axel Alonso, inquiring about his interest in "Star Wars?," to which Aaron responded with an enthusiastic, "I'm in." To make room for Star Wars in his workload, he ceased writing Amazing X-Men. Aaron and Cassaday conceived their approach to the comic by envisioning what it would have been like to write the sequel to the original Star Wars. They conducted research at Skywalker Ranch and visited the Archives, while also collaborating with Lucasfilm on the comics' direction.
Aaron characterized the series as a team-focused narrative, while also highlighting its emphasis on Luke's personal development, explaining that he related to the character from his own childhood on a farm. He mentioned his intention to explore Han's past in a way that went beyond simple encounters with more bounty hunters. According to Aaron, capturing the correct voice for C-3PO has proven to be the most challenging aspect of writing the comic. Aaron also teased flashback stories centered around Ben Kenobi, stating, "I always loved that character in the original film and we never really see much of that version, the Alec Guinness version."
Cassaday described the task of illustrating the galaxy's "junk-like" aesthetic as simultaneously a "headache and an absolute pleasure." He elaborated that "Getting the details together has been time consuming and tedious, but once I got going, it's been great fun."
Issue 6 marked Cassaday's final contribution as artist, with subsequent story arcs featuring a rotation of artists, including Stuart Immonen, Leinil Francis Yu, and Jorge Molina. Starting with issue 26, Salvador Larroca assumed the role of main series artist, illustrating every issue thereafter. Beginning with issue 38, Kieron Gillen took over as writer, reuniting the creative team from Star Wars: Darth Vader. Gillen's approach to writing Star Wars mirrored his approach to Darth Vader, concentrating on depicting the characters' evolution from A New Hope to The Empire Strikes Back. His tenure commenced with The Ashes of Jedha, in which Luke, Leia, and Han encounter Jedha in the aftermath of its destruction.
