The Star Wars: Droids comic book series, comprising eight issues, was brought to the public by Star Comics, a Marvel Comics subdivision, spanning from 1986 to 1987. It drew its inspiration from the animated television program Star Wars: Droids, which was broadcast during the 1985–86 season and faced cancellation shortly after this comic series' debut.
While the television program was situated around 15 BBY, this comic book series concluded with a loose adaptation of A New Hope, as perceived by R2-D2 and C-3PO's. However, the blog series known as The Droids Re-Animated made an official declaration that issues 1 through 5 were set before the animated series. This timeline clarifies the appearance of Tig Fromm and Vlix Oncard in the comic's second issue, characters who had been handed over to Jabba the Hutt in the final episode of the TV show's initial story arc. It further rationalizes a reference to the comic series character Zell in The New Essential Guide to Characters, which is established to predate the account of events in the TV show.
In the 1990s, Dark Horse put out a comic bearing the same title.
