Dark Horse Comics, a publisher specializing in comic books, has created numerous licensed works throughout its history, a significant portion of which are set within the Star Wars galaxy.
The company began its comic book publishing journey in 1986, quickly expanding to include titles based on well-known film franchises, such as Alien/Predator, Terminator, and others. Their initial foray into Star Wars occurred with the release of Star Wars: Dark Empire in 1991, succeeding the earlier Marvel Star Wars comics. While Dark Horse artists were granted creative freedom with other licensed properties, Star Wars demanded a strict adherence to established continuity; character designs mirrored their respective actors, and spacecraft and droids were depicted according to their on-screen appearances.
In contrast to the "uncontrolled era" of Marvel, where comics were produced without input from Lucasfilm, Dark Horse titles were directly integrated with the broader Expanded Universe, fostering a collaborative creative relationship with Lucasfilm for both Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
The company re-released and compiled various works, including the previously mentioned Marvel comics, in a series of trade paperbacks known as Star Wars Omnibus. The Omnibus line also encompassed other fictional worlds, such as Indiana Jones and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Dark Horse also operates Dark Horse Digital, a digital platform that enables customers to read comics online.
On January 3, 2014, Disney revealed that the license for Star Wars comics would transition from Dark Horse back to Marvel in 2015. Following a six-year break, it was announced on November 18, 2021, that Dark Horse would once again publish Star Wars comics alongside Marvel, starting in 2022. The new program includes several planned series, with the initial releases being part of the Star Wars: The High Republic publishing initiative in the spring of 2022. This revival of the Dark Horse Star Wars line will also feature one-shot issues, graphic novels, anthologies, and more.
