While evading Imperial stormtroopers, Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, and C-3PO stumble upon a sanctuary housing a gold effigy of Han Solo. The Rebels find themselves perplexed until the arrival of Rov Vetter Piin, who proclaims Solo as Ventooine's deliverer and activates a mechanism on the statue that plays a recording of Solo's voice, which narrates his tale of saving the world. Solo, accompanied by his co-pilot Chewbacca, journeyed to Ventooine with the intention of trading Sansanna spice. Regrettably, upon making inquiries at a nearby cantina, Solo is swiftly expelled, branded as a supporter of the Satab. While fleeing the mob, Solo coincidentally rescues Tieress Chrysalla, the Satab's consort, from an attempted assassination. Solo is then hailed as a hero and escorted to the Satab's residence, where he learns that the Satab governs the planet through a gem called the Shadeshine. Due to the stone's potent ability to exhaust an individual's life force, a new Satab must be chosen annually. The former Satab is then relegated to the Hall of Satabs, where they are placed in a state of suspended animation alongside other past Satabs, awaiting a cure for the burnout. Solo is positioned to assume the title, but before the current Satab can "promote" Solo, Chrysalla intervenes, shielding him from enslavement to the shadeshine. Solo attempts to resist the Satab, but the Shadeshine's power renders him too formidable. Fortunately, Chrysalla steps in to rescue Han, preventing the Satab from reaching the Hall of Satabs in time, which results in his disintegration into ashes. Chrysalla then puts an end to the Shadeshine's dominion by entering the Hall of Satabs herself. Han is celebrated as a hero for dismantling the Satabs' rule, and a statue is erected in his honor. Returning to the present, stormtroopers eventually corner Luke and his companions. Luke manages to deceive the troopers into entering the Hall of Satabs by inserting a memory stone containing his voice into the nullification chamber. The Imperials enter the chamber and are immediately placed into suspended animation. Subsequently, Luke, Lando, and C-3PO make their escape from the planet aboard a Y-wing.
