The blackneedle tree flourished as a species of tree within Oa Park, situated on Coruscant, the planet serving as the capital of the Galactic Republic. This particular tree within the park had been planted around 420 BBY. Prior to Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee's conflict with the mercenary Phow Ji on Drongar in 20 BBY, she and her master, Luminara Unduli, were once found standing beneath the canopy of such a tree, which measured three meters in diameter, reached a height of 200 meters, and had existed for more than 400 years.
It was there that Unduli cautioned her Padawan about the ever-present danger posed by the dark side of the Force, urging her to maintain constant vigilance. Following her encounter with Ji, an event that had tempted Offee to embrace the dark side, she recalled the time spent with Unduli in the park, focusing on their conversation in the blackneedle's shadow.
The blackneedle tree made an appearance in MedStar I: Battle Surgeons, a novel released in 2004. This book, penned by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry, served as the inaugural installment of the MedStar Duology.
