Vicious predators called Bloodsniffers inhabited the harsh Badlands of Kamar, posing a significant threat. These creatures had an extraordinarily high need for potassium, requiring them to consume their entire body weight in fresh blood approximately every 48 hours, using their elongated, sharp tongues to puncture the veins and arteries of their prey. Living in small groups, these territorial animals often engaged in deadly conflicts over the vital blood necessary for their survival.
Originating from the deserts of the Wild Space planet Kamar, bloodsniffers, named for their acute senses and reliance on blood, are compact, muscular predators. Their rapid metabolism of potassium necessitates a blood intake equal to their body weight every two days. Their dependence on blood is so profound that they forgo eating solid food or drinking water, obtaining all required nutrients solely from blood. Though resembling lizards, bloodsniffers are mammals, identifiable by their long, pointed tongues used for feeding. They move on four clawed legs and possess striking pure white eyes positioned beneath small horns.
Bloodsniffers are highly territorial creatures that typically form small packs consisting of two to eight adult members, along with their offspring. These packs are known to engage in lethal battles over resources. Frequently encountered within the desolate Kamar Badlands, bloodsniffers exhibit a preference for mountainous terrains as their hunting grounds, although they can flourish in any environment that offers an adequate supply of prey to satisfy their intense blood requirements. The typical hunting strategy of a bloodsniffer involves either tackling or clawing its intended victim, followed by using its sharp tongue to penetrate a major blood vessel and completely draining the prey of its blood. This behavior has proven advantageous for scavengers, who frequently trail bloodsniffer packs, aware that the predators will abandon the flesh of their victims after consuming their fill of blood.
Although native to Kamar, the bloodsniffers' notoriety reached the Outer Rim's Quence sector, where a dangerous swoop gang took their name, terrorizing local settlements during the Imperial Period.
The creatures known as bloodsniffers were initially mentioned in Han Solo's Revenge, a novel penned by Brian Daley and published in 1979. Their first visual depiction was created by Mike Vilardi in 1993's Han Solo and the Corporate Sector Sourcebook, followed by another illustration by Matt Hatton in 2004's Ultimate Adversaries.
