Calonica

Calonica, a planet found within the Vensensor sector, was an astronomical body categorized as an Expansion Region location. During the era of the Galactic Civil War, it housed a Galactic Empire capital defended by a field of fifty thousand subterranean LX-2 comlink mines. The Rebel Alliance, at one point, successfully disabled these [mines](/article/mine/legends] via remote control. Following this, they extracted the explosive charges from over ninety percent of the devices, an action that ultimately spurred the creation of the LX-4 proton mine.

Description

Calonica, a terrestrial planet, resided within the Calonica system, itself located within the Vensensor sector of the Western Reaches region of the Expansion Region. Its geographical position was along the Corellian Trade Spine super-hyperroute, providing connectivity to both the Tar Morden system and the Bomis Koori system situated in the Mid Rim.

History

During the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire maintained a presence on Calonica. Their Imperial capital there was protected by fifty thousand Merr-Sonn Munitions LX-2 comlink mines buried in the surrounding area. Rebel Alliance spies were able to remotely deactivate these mines. Subsequently, Rebels exhumed the devices, removing the explosive charges from the vast majority (over ninety percent) before reburying the now-harmless casings.

A subsequent inspection revealed the missing charges, an event that ultimately triggered the development of the LX-4 proton mine, a device designed to only be disabled through detonation. Shortly after the Battle of Yavin, the Calonica incident was included in a compilation of Imperial documents assembled by Rebel historian Major Arhul Hextrophon for Supreme Commander Mon Mothma and other officers in the Rebel forces.

Behind the scenes

The article "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder Where We Are" situated Calonica within the Tau Sekar sector's boundaries.

Calonica was initially referenced in Greg Gorden's 1989 Imperial Sourcebook, a publication by West End Games for the Star Wars role-playing game. A 1990 roleplaying game article, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder Where We Are," published in the thirteenth issue of Voyages SF magazine, placed Calonica in the Tau Sekar sector. As this article wasn't sanctioned by Lucas Licensing, its canonicity within the Star Wars Legends continuity remained unconfirmed. The Essential Atlas, a reference book from 2009, subsequently placed the Calonica system, and thus the planet, in grid square K-16. The StarWars.com Online Companion for the book later superseded the Voyages SF 13 placement, establishing the system's location as the Vensensor sector instead.
