Cartariun was an Imperial technician with Force-sensitive abilities. He was assigned to an Imperial Garrison located on the planet Malrev IV.
Following the Battle of Endor, his fellow soldiers departed the planet to assist the Empire in subsequent engagements. However, the Devaronian remained behind after uncovering the hidden abilities within the Sith Temple that plagued his previous allies.
Living in solitude for a number of years, the one-time Imperial lost his sanity but acquired considerable understanding of Sith magic. This allowed him to extend his influence over the indigenous Irrukiine tribes, plunging the wolf-like inhabitants into a state of savage bloodthirst. He manipulated their every move through his dark powers. Cartariun met the end that awaits all who seek power through the dark side when Rogue Squadron, while on a mission to rescue survivors of a downed Bothan passenger liner, discovered the secluded madman plotting to take back the Emperor's throne. Although he succeeded in capturing Wedge Antilles and commanded his followers to attack the Rogues, Antilles escaped, and his squadron companions triumphed over Cartariun's forces. Cartariun was ultimately killed by the Bothan operative Girov Dza'tey, who also coveted the temple's power.
