Cavern Monsters were creatures without sentience that originated on the world of Ventooine. These beasts were extremely hostile and would attack any living thing they could reach. The Satabs utilized Cavern Monsters as instruments of execution and as a form of punishment for those who opposed them during their rule. During the Galactic Civil War, Han Solo visited Ventooine and nearly met his end when a Satab secretly unleashed a Cavern Monster on him inside a mine. Solo managed to slay the beast by causing a falling stalactite to pierce through it.
