Ciaran Gultnieks's profession was programming, specifically for the computer versions of Star Wars: The Arcade Game and also _The Empire Strikes Back_.
Gultnieks began working at Vektor Grafix, a British video game company, in 1987. He was hired as their first employee, joining the two founders. Their initial project involved adapting Star Wars: The Arcade Game for play on personal computers. Following the triumph of this adaptation, Vektor Grafix received a commission to adapt The Empire Strikes Back in 1988. Gultnieks continued to develop games with the company until MicroProse acquired it in 1992.
He remained at MicroProse until they launched the flight simulator Dogfight. In 1993, after another acquisition, MicroProse shut down its UK division. Gultnieks then co-founded The Software Refinery alongside Ian Martin and several other programmers. This new company released titles like Slipstream 5000 and Hardwar during the 1990s, before ceasing operations in 2002.
