During the Cold War, Jet Nebula, a smuggler, owned a powerful and durable J8O soldier droid named Clunker. When Jet encountered him initially, he attempted to repair Clunker's vocoder, only for the droid to immediately cause it to malfunction again. Instead of speaking, Clunker used military-style hand gestures to communicate with his owner. Despite his size, Clunker displayed reaction times exceeding those of typical humanoids, often silently positioning himself behind potentially threatening individuals while they were engaged in conversation with Jet Nebula, a behavior they both found unusual for a droid of his build. Due to what was officially recorded as a factory error, his memory would periodically erase itself completely, except for retaining the identity of his current employer and the ship he was currently assigned to, provided he remained actively employed in that role. Jet Nebula came to the conclusion that the droid was trying to avoid proof he had heard an order (and therefore must follow it) and not leaving evidence in his memory of anything he had done. Nebula fixed him so the restart wouldn't happen and only managed to have it not happen as often, but he was never fully repaired. Furthermore, he demonstrated impressive hacking abilities, simultaneously breaching the security of both Republic and Empire fleets, seizing control of them during an assault, and subsequently wiping all digital records of the event.
