During the era of the Galactic Civil War, a specific identifier code, known as code black hole, was employed by both pirates and privateers. Every starship throughout the galaxy possessed transponder codes embedded within their sublight engine, which served to identify the vessel's name, owner, and classification. These codes, officially registered by the Bureau of Ships and Services, were designed to pinpoint ships engaged in unlawful conduct. To conceal their true identities, pirates and privateers resorted to illicit technologies, enabling them to disguise or modify their transponder codes, thus establishing dual identities for their vessels; they would use legitimate codes for ordinary commerce and "pirate codes" during their raids. This "code black hole," the pirate code, revealed the owner's assumed name and was deliberately crafted to intimidate the crew of targeted ships into submission. A variation of code black hole, termed "code quasar," was utilized by Rebel privateers.
