Cog Hive Seven was a prison space station situated in the Tharin sector of the Outer Rim. During the final years of the Galactic Republic, the owners exploited it for a gambling operation centered around gladiatorial death matches.
Constructed around 38 BBY, the space station possessed a dynamic architecture allowing for intricate reconfigurations. The InterGalactic Banking Clan provided the funds, while Dakarai Blirr created the algorithm upon which it was based. Following its expedited completion, Dakarai's sister, Sadiki, took on the role of Warden of Cog Hive Seven. The Blirr siblings profited immensely, gaining millions of credits from the twice-daily death matches. Their algorithm's perfect success rate, however, led to conflict with the Galactic Gaming Commission.
Iram Radique, an extremely secretive weapons manufacturer and dealer, secretly established his operational base within Cog Hive Seven, unbeknownst to Warden Blirr. Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith, orchestrated an assassination plot against his own dark master that involved the prison. Sidious assigned his apprentice, Darth Maul, the task of infiltrating both the prison and the well-organized criminal network operating within its walls. Using the alias "Jagganath" while imprisoned in Cog Hive Seven, Maul participated in four of the prison's regular gladiatorial death matches between inmates.
The short story "The Syrox Redemption," penned by Joe Schreiber and featured in Star Wars Insider 146, marked the initial appearance of Cog Hive Seven. This story laid the groundwork for elements explored in the 2014 novel Maul: Lockdown, also authored by Schreiber, which prominently features Cog Hive Seven as its primary setting.
