Cort Davin originated from the Outer Rim planet of Concord Dawn, a world within the Mandalore sector of the galaxy, and was a male native to that planet. For a time, Davin held the position of a Journeyman Protector, a highly regarded constable on Concord Dawn, gaining valuable experience in special forces missions. However, by 30 BBY, a year, Davin chose to leave the Protectors and accepted Jango Fett's invitation to join the Cuy'val Dar, a group of one hundred individuals handpicked by the experienced Mandalorian soldier to train the clone commandos for the Galactic Republic's Grand Army on Kamino. Despite being part of the non-Mandalorian minority in the Cuy'val Dar, he, like the others, vanished from known space at Fett's command, dedicating nearly a decade to training the clone soldiers under his charge, until they were deployed during the Battle of Geonosis.
Following the commencement of the Clone Wars at Geonosis, a war fought between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Davin remained on Kamino as a clone training sergeant, aiding the Kaminoan cloners in educating new Advanced Recon Commandos and clone commanders within an advanced learning program established by ARC trooper Alpha-17. Among Davin's students was CC-1138, who was known as "Bacara." From Davin, Bacara adopted the principles of the Journeyman Protectors, seeing himself as an enforcer of law and order. Davin also imparted the Concordian dialect to Bacara, and considered this early graduate of the commander training program to be one of his most accomplished pupils.
Cort Davin's initial appearance in Star Wars canon was in the article Guide to the Grand Army of the Republic, which was featured in Star Wars Insider. This article was authored by Karen Traviss and Ryan Kaufman, and it was published in September 2005 as part of the magazine's eighty-forth issue.
Ryan Kaufman disclosed on his blog on StarWars.com that he named Davin after a character that his childhood friend had created when they were younger, during the time when they played with Star Wars action figures together.
