The Crystal Snare, a spherical asteroid with a diameter of four kilometers, resided within the asteroid belt of the Cularin system. This celestial body originated from the substantial crystal formations found on Oblis, the planet whose destruction led to the formation of the asteroid belt.
During her initial exploration of the system in 232 BBY, Reidi Artom conducted an investigation of the asteroid. Her ship's navigational system became fixated on the asteroid, ultimately requiring her to switch to manual piloting to divert her course.
This asteroid, the Crystal Snare, was a crudely spherical object, spanning approximately four kilometers, and its surface was encrusted with crystalline formations that possessed minimal commercial worth. This crystalline asteroid possessed the ability to enhance transmissions, producing brighter light reflections and inducing interference with sensor readings. On her initial encounter, Reidi Artom identified peculiar energy signatures surrounding the asteroid; however, subsequent investigations, including her own, failed to detect these signatures.
It was generally understood that manual piloting was necessary when in proximity to the Crystal Snare. Due to the inability of larger vessels to approach closer than 1,000 km to the asteroid, smugglers frequently utilized it as a clandestine refuge (smaller vessels had a PNR of 600 km). Over the course of time, at least three vessels have vanished in the vicinity of this asteroid.
