Cularin asteroid belt

The Cularin asteroid belt was a sparse asteroid belt located within the Cularin system. These asteroids were the scattered remains of Oblis, the [jungle](/article/jungle/legends] homeworld of the Oblee. This asteroid belt existed in the space between the orbits of Almas and Genarius. A particularly unusual asteroid within the belt was called the Crystal Snare, a surviving piece of the extensive crystal formations that once covered Oblis.

Smugglers in the service of Nirama utilized the Cularin asteroid belt as a place to lie in wait. Nirama's criminal syndicate had its headquarters on the largest asteroid, which measured over 400 kilometers across. He also exerted control over other asteroids, including the repair facility known as Darkside, so named because it was perpetually in the shadow of larger asteroids.

Furthermore, various groups of pirates also used it as a concealed base of operations and a location to stage ambushes, occupying a different section of the belt. Ships were compelled to disengage from hyperspace in order to proceed further into the system, rendering them vulnerable to pirate attacks.

History

Cularin asteroid belt

At some point in time, the Czerka Mining Corporation established a mining installation there, known as CMC-3.

During 188 BBY, Kibh Jeen, a former Padawan who had succumbed to the dark side due to the influence of the Almas Sith fortress, employed his mental abilities to manipulate the pirates within the asteroid belt and to attract other followers, thereby forming an army that he would command for a period of seven years during the Dark Jedi Conflict. Jeen and his forces, operating from their base in the asteroid belt, launched attacks on planets and transports within the systems, subsequently disappearing back into the asteroids to evade detection. Ultimately, Jeen met his end at the hands of a local armada led by Jedi, although the presence of pirates persisted within the belt.

In 32 BBY, Colonel Jir Tramsig, a military officer from Thaere assigned to protect the Cularin system, responded to the pirate ambushes targeting civilian vessels by deploying military cruisers along the same route. In one such engagement, his cruiser successfully destroyed five pirate vessels, effectively deterring the pirates from continuing that particular tactic.

In 31 BBY, the Blood Raptors organized a race that involved navigating the tunnels of Eskaron. The first racer to exit the moon was granted the privilege of selecting the course for the remainder of the race: either traverse the Cularin asteroid belt and return, before proceeding to the starting point, Tolea Biqua; or venture to the perilous Nub Saar prior to returning to Tolea Biqua. Gael Kinner, a skilled Raptor racer, favored the asteroid belt route.

Shortly thereafter, The Cell, a rebellious faction within Nirama's organization, engaged in a power struggle with Nirama for control of strategically important asteroids, including the space station Darkside and the primary weapons storage facility known as Rothe Gate. Nirama eventually suppressed the rebellion.

A local pirate group known as the Red Fury Brotherhood maintained their base on asteroid L-7, although the majority of the gang would typically evacuate L-7 on an annual basis to attend the SoroSuub party held in the city of Tolea Biqua, located on Genarius.

Around 31 BBY, Len Markus, an agent working for Nirama, acquired a Sith artifact called the Darkstaff within the Cularin asteroid belt and attempted to escape the system with it. Approximately ten years later, Phylus Mon, Markus's agent who was in possession of the Darkstaff, attempted to conceal his ship, the Animiasma, within the asteroid belt. The Darkstaff subsequently attempted to reshape the galaxy to reflect its own dark nature; however, its influence was limited to transforming the ship, rather than the entire belt, into a dark side nexus.

Around 22 BBY, Jag Murrock, an explorer, discovered deposits of Adegan crystal within certain regions of the Cularin asteroid belt.
