The armed forces of Thaereian system, situated in the Mid Rim, were collectively known as the Navy of Thaere, the Thaereian Navy, or the Thaereian military. They served as the defense force for their system during the waning years of the Galactic Republic. Upon request from Lavina Wren, the senator representing the adjacent Cularin system, the Navy also extended its protection to Cularin. As the Clone Wars erupted, the Galactic Senate officially designated the Navy of Thaere as the protector of the Cularin system. However, this protection was met with skepticism within Cularin, as many citizens viewed it as unwanted meddling or suspected the military of having ulterior motives.
In the Galactic Republic's twilight years, the Thaereians committed to safeguarding the recently inducted Cularin system. After the Trade Wars ousted the Trade Federation from Cularin, a unified force to combat the system's pirate factions was absent. Lavina Wren, Cularin's Senator, deeply concerned about the pirates, promptly requested a military presence in Cularin. Thaere responded, although the response was not impressive to most, except for a few idealists, the native Tarasin species and Senator Wren herself.
Colonel Jir Tramsig, a newly promoted and unpopular officer, was assigned the task. He deployed a force significantly smaller than authorized by his superiors, while also enlisting the services of bounty hunter Tira Wils. Initially, he established a modest base on Dorumaa, launching sporadic attacks on pirates while assessing the situation. Subsequently, he augmented his forces and established a larger base in Soboll, on Cularin. One year following the Trade Wars, his forces in the Cularin system comprised two divisions, four capital ships, and eighteen patrol vessels.
The Thaereian forces faced considerable unpopularity within the Cularin system. They frequently disrupted shipping under the guise of piracy prevention, yet failed to effectively curb anything beyond large-scale piracy. Ironically, pirate attacks consistently occurred when patrol vessels were absent.
Suspicions arose regarding the Thaereians' hidden agenda. Indeed, Colonel Tramsig engaged in clandestine activities, unbeknownst to even his subordinates. He illicitly requisitioned excess materials, maintained a relationship with Nirama for resupplying supposedly lost materials and questionable technology, employed pirates for undisclosed tasks, and constructed secret bases on Tilnes and [Ulbasca](/article/ulbasca], along with a concealed deep-sea landing platform on Dorumaa distinct from the original base. The Thaereian military, facilitated by financier Qar Jalunn, collaborated with independent genetic researcher Yush Baskalar in the asteroid belt, despite Baskalar's explicit disdain for the Thaereians. Furthermore, the Thaerians maintained some form of alliance with the Metatheran Cartel.
Rumors circulated suggesting that he, or the military, might be linked to Identification #43641's investments in Dorumaa, specifically the creation of a floating platform operational only at night.
Major Kurth San was dispatched by the Thaereian military as a representative to the SoroSuub Anniversary celebration, 31 BBY on Genarius. There, Major San gauged local interest in joining the Thaereian Navy. Content with the enthusiasm displayed by many talented individuals, Major San departed the event.
Following the disappearance of the Cularin system, the Thaerians exploited the ensuing crisis to quadruple their military presence, deploying a massive fleet to the system's former location. Upon the system's reappearance, Cularin's inhabitants were astonished by this development. With the commencement of the Clone Wars, the Galactic Senate extended Cularin's status as a Thaerian protectorate, granting the Thaerians a mandate effectively placing Cularin under their complete control. Capitalizing on pre-existing economic interests in the Cularin system, the Thaerians leveraged this resolution to consolidate their control over these interests.
Midway through the Clone Wars, the Thaereians aligned themselves with the Confederacy of Independent Systems. By this point, volunteers from the Cularin system had established the Cularin Militia.

The Living Force Campaign Guide was penned prior to the release of Attack of the Clones, which revealed that the Republic lacked a standing army. Consequently, the guide depicted Colonel Tramsig as leading Republic military forces. After the release of AotC, it was clarified that the military units present in the Cularin system originated from the neighboring system of Thaere. In the initial version, Jir Tramsig's involvement in something was evident, although it likely did not encompass the overt expansionist agenda that emerged under the Thaereian iteration.
