The attainment of the Darkest Knight title was the result of a deadly tournament, where the victor survived by eliminating their opponent, showcasing the Academy's "survival of the fittest" philosophy. The Shadow Academy had been enlisting young individuals (predominantly Humans) from the fringes of the galactic population, especially the Lost Ones, a street gang operating out of Coruscant. Individuals who demonstrated Force-sensitive abilities underwent training to become Dark Jedi, while those lacking such abilities were assigned roles as stormtroopers and TIE pilots.
Among the notable individuals who held this title was Zekk. He earned it by winning a zero-gravity duel to the death against a fellow student named Vilas, whom he mistakenly believed to be a mere hallucination.
