Darkspace is the term the Yuuzhan Vong employed to refer to what others knew as hyperspace. Rather than utilizing conventional hyperdrives, they relied on dovin basals for the purpose of drawing a ship across vast distances. Even with their highly developed biotechnology, the Yuuzhan Vong were still subject to the same restrictions within hyperspace as those who used hyperdrives. The mass shadows produced by objects in realspace could disrupt their journeys through darkspace, and they were obligated to navigate using established hyperlanes to ensure a secure passage.
