Yuuzhan Vong

The Yuuzhan Vong, known as "Children of Yun-Yuuzhan" and the Chosen Race, were referred to as the Far Outsiders by the Chiss and Ferroans. They are sometimes, though inaccurately, shortened to Vong, a term implying familial and divine abandonment. This nomadic extra-galactic sentient species nearly obliterated the New Republic and caused the demise of over 300 trillion sentients during their invasion of the galaxy.

Originating from an ancient species on the planet Yuuzhan'tar in a remote galaxy, the Yuuzhan Vong typically resembled Humans, but were taller, heavier, and had less hair. As religious fanatics, they considered mechanical technology sacrilegious, relying solely on genetically engineered, organic innovations. Furthermore, they revered pain to the point of sadomasochism and augmented their physical abilities through organ transplantation, a practice that signified status in their society.

A defining characteristic of the Yuuzhan Vong was their inability to be sensed through the Force, which perplexed the Jedi upon their initial encounters. However, they were not entirely immune to Force-based attacks.

Biology and appearance

A Yuuzhan Vong warrior

The Yuuzhan Vong were a humanoid species, leading some to initially believe they were a Human offshoot. However, differences existed, such as the typical absence of kidneys in Yuuzhan Vong. They were also taller and more heavily built than most Humans, potentially due to selective breeding. Their average lifespan was 76 standard years, but they could live two to three times longer than the average Human. Genetically, they shared similarities with Humans, which was unusual for an extragalactic species, but a key difference was a genetic element present in all their biotechnology.

Yuuzhan Vong had sloped, ridge-like foreheads. Some had pointed ears, while others did not, possibly due to ritual mutilations or genetic variation; the norm is unclear. Their short, stub-like noses gave their faces a skull-like appearance. While usually having black hair, it was less abundant on their heads and bodies compared to Humans, and often worn longer or not at all. Small blue sacks under their eyes, considered a mark of beauty, expanded and contracted to reflect their mood, as they didn't use Human-like facial expressions. These sacks indicated delight or rage. Gray was the most common skin tone, followed by yellow. Another notable trait was their jet-black blood.

Their nervous system was highly conductive, optimized for feeling pain, and contained elements absent in Humans, and vice versa. Their tissue differed significantly from Human tissue, making the use of Yuuzhan Vong Qah cells difficult, as the Human brain eventually rejected them.

A Yuuzhan Vong warrior

Perhaps the most unsettling trait for Jedi and others was their existence outside the Force. They lacked a Force presence and were mostly unaffected by direct Force powers. Sensing their motives or intentions was futile, though detecting their absence in the Force was possible. A telekinetic blast that would normally launch an opponent only caused them to stumble. While direct Force manipulation was difficult, indirect methods like telekinetically throwing objects or manipulating air pressure could harm them. The exceptions were variations of Force lightning/Emerald lightning, the dark side technique Force net, Dark Transfer, and, to some extent, Shatterpoint.

Some Jedi developed Vongsense, an ability similar to the Force, particularly in detection and telepathy, but specific to the Yuuzhan Vong and their biots.

Culture

A female and male Yuuzhan Vong

Yuuzhan Vong culture revolved around sacrifice and their deities, with warriors focusing on the philosophy of pain. They glorified pain as a state of living, believing that, like their gods who sacrificed themselves to create the galaxy, they too should sacrifice their bodies for a greater purpose. Remaking their bodies was seen as becoming closer to their gods, though they avoided permanent impairment. This resulted in mottling, scarring, and tattoos. Elite individuals grafted organs from other creatures into their bodies. Devotional practices involved bloodletting during prayer. Shamed Ones were barred from religious ceremonies.

Success led to sacrificing body parts and replacing them with enhanced organs during the Escalatier Ceremony, where an engineered organism, related to an Implanter, made incisions and placed implants. Successful integration led to promotion, while failure resulted in death or becoming a Shamed One, believed to be the work of the gods, or the fault of the Shaper in charge.

Family was a strong element, with members associated with a family group called a Domain. Some Domains were more powerful than others. They also used a caste system for warriors, shapers, priests, intendants, and workers. Inter-caste relationships were forbidden. Domain loyalties were deep, expressed through ritual statements from lower to higher ranks. However, caste members weren't obligated to salute superiors from other castes, such as intendants to warriors.

Two members of the Yuuzhan Vong species

Yuuzhan Vong children were raised in caste-specific crèches by caretakers, likely not knowing their biological parents until older. Crèche parents named them. Deformed children were killed at birth, unless the deformity was minor, as with Ona Shai. Paranoia was a useful survival trait in their harsh environment. Twin births were rare, seen as portents of great events, with one twin killing the other as a prelude. Funeral processions didn't preserve the dead, and mortuaries involved mourners meeting with priests who removed body parts to dedicate to the gods.

An Imperial officer noted similarities between the Empire and the Yuuzhan Vong, such as strict discipline and obedience. However, their ultimate goals differed, with the Yuuzhan Vong seeking to change the galaxy's way of life by destroying manufactured technology, a key strength of the Imperial Remnant. This belief in discipline meant subordinates didn't contradict leaders, though they could subvert their will. They were highly skilled warriors who never retreated, fearing insult to their gods, though some acted cowardly, becoming Shamed Ones.

Yuuzhan Vong beliefs strongly influenced their actions. Their religion saw life as suffering and death as release. They believed nothing was learned without pain and willingly embraced death. Some, like Domain Shai, enjoyed inflicting pain, believing it earned divine favor. Death in battle was considered the greatest glory, though dying in the void was disgraceful. This led them to fight to the death, limiting opportunities to study their organic warships. Priests claimed to sacrifice their own as well as "infidels" to their deities, who sacrificed themselves to create existence.

They also valued honor, with a Yuuzhan Vong's word being highly regarded, even under interrogation. A Yuuzhan Vong commander once agreed to a duel for a planet, promising to spare it if defeated, though his subordinates subverted this. Denying honorable combat was seen as disrespectful. Warriors respected worthy opponents. A concept similar to the Wookiee Life debt, called Us-hrok, showed eternal gratitude and loyalty, with the Yuuzhan Vong fighting to the death for that person. They had little joy in eating, except during events like slaying a great beast in a ritual.

Yuuzhan Vong onboard their living ships

Their wartime psychology was based on aggressive attack, making them dangerous but sometimes predictable. They were encouraged by resistance and saw worthy foes. They believed in competition to breed strength, but this caused internal feuds between Domains and castes, leading to civil war. The Invasion was meant to provide an external enemy, but divisions reappeared. They deeply believed in revenge and used aggressive emotions, unlike the Jedi, leading to suicide attacks for glory. This warlike nature meant they lacked a concept of peace, which they defined as willing submission. Profanities could lead to a blood challenge to the death. Insulting words like "fool" justified killing the opponent. Attacks on pride were grounds for demanding satisfaction or offering sacrifice to their gods.

They fanatically hated machines, seeing them as abominations. They believed combustion was the first abomination because they believed in life ending naturally, with one lifeform consumed by another, replenishing the ecosystem. Machines, however, didn't die and could replace organic life, which they wouldn't allow.

They had a saying: "Let the enemy fight", expecting combat and setting ambushes. Their interdiction forces remained outside routes to trap targets. Another saying was "A fleet that fights two battles loses twice." Their early relations with other races were based on domination, seeing most as unworthy. Those who impressed them were given a clean death, while others were enslaved.

Despite their barbarity, they revered life. They favored the Ho'Din, who disliked advanced technology, and some primitive races like those on Wayland. These "Wish-To-Bes" believed the Yuuzhan Vong respected life, while most saw them as twisting things to suit their needs. They believed they had to prove themselves worthy creations of their deities or be destroyed and replaced, which they believed had happened three times before.

After the War, they became deeply spiritual and introspective. Many felt they couldn't mend relations due to the War, but some believed they needed to evolve to survive and that the journey was worthwhile. They retained their honor, with custom and ritual remaining important.

Society description

Supreme Overlord

The Supreme Overlord was the highest caste, controlling all others.

Priest caste

A priest

The priest caste held considerable power in their theocratic society, serving the many lesser deities. There were several sects, each worshipping a different deity. Ranks included Mosthigh priest, High Priest(ess), Priest(ess), and Seer.

Warrior caste

A Yuuzhan Vong warrior

The warrior caste served as the Yuuzhan Vong armies, trained from a young age to excel in combat and being more aggressive than other Yuuzhan Vong. Notable members included Tsavong Lah and Nas Choka, who became Warmaster. Their chief weapon was the amphistaff, a deadly serpent. They worshipped Yun-Yammka, the Slayer, and sought honor in combat. They wore living vonduun crab armor resistant to blaster fire and lightsabers, but with weak points at the armpits and inner hip.

Ranks included Warmaster, Supreme Commander, Commander, Subaltern, and Warrior.

Intendant caste

The Intendant caste maintained Yuuzhan Vong society, responsible for the economy. They were the smallest caste, lacking a patron deity or war cry. They managed commerce, bureaucracy, trade, and the slave workforce. Notable Intendants included Nom Anor, the deadliest enemy of the Jedi. Members could come from the Shaper or Warrior castes. Shimrra Jamaane was formerly an Intendant before becoming Supreme Overlord. They were the government and politicians, favoring Yun-Harla, the Trickster goddess.

Ranks included High Prefect, Prefect, Consul, Executor, and Attendant.

Worker caste

The worker caste was the largest and lowest, serving as servants, slaves, and laborers. It included Shamed Ones, those whose bodies rejected implants, those born into the caste, those who failed in other castes, and conquered species like the Chazrach. Slaves and Shamed Ones were treated with contempt, even by fellow workers, though those born into the caste were descended from Shamed Ones.

Deities

The Yuuzhan Vong religion, the True Way, was crucial. They were devout and had many gods, believing it their duty to appease them through conquest and genocide.

Yun-Yuuzhan

Yun-Yuuzhan, the creator, was the most powerful deity. He sacrificed himself to create the lesser deities and the Yuuzhan Vong galaxy. Only the Supreme Overlord had direct contact with him.

Yun-Harla

Yun-Harla was the Trickster, the Cloaked Goddess, and goddess of deception and aggression, representing the political caste. The New Republic military codenamed Jaina Solo "Trickster" and "Goddess" in psychological warfare, making the Yuuzhan Vong believe they were fighting a living deity.

Yun-Yammka

Yun-Yammka was the Slayer, the god of war, depicted as a multi-tentacled being and inspiration for the yammosk. He was primarily worshipped by the warrior caste and was created by the priest caste when the Yuuzhan Vong turned to war.

Yun-Ne'Shel

Yun-Ne'Shel was the Modeler, overseeing natural life cycles and worshipped by the shaper caste.

Yun-Txiin and Yun-Q'aah (The Lover Gods)

Yun-Txiin and Yun-Q'aah were the Lover Gods and twins. Relationships outside one's caste were forbidden, leading to sacrifice to them.

Yun-Shuno

Yun-Shuno was the Pardoner, with a thousand eyes, watching over and speaking for the Shamed Ones, who were shunned by other deities. She was the only deity they could worship.

History

Early history

A Yuuzhan Vong

The Yuuzhan Vong originated as displaced people from a far-off galaxy. Their initial home planet, Yuuzhan'tar, was a tropical world encircled by a substantial asteroid belt. It met its end thousands of standard years before their invasion of the galaxy.

In the Yuuzhan Vong language, Yuuzhan'tar translates to "Crèche of the gods," and this living planet served as the archetype for the Yuuzhan Vong's divinities. It's possible that Yuuzhan'tar provided the foundation for Yun-Yuuzhan, who is revered as the Yuuzhan Vong's creator god.

Details surrounding their early history are scarce, but it seems the Yuuzhan Vong once existed in a symbiotic relationship with their planet and possessed Force-sensitivity. Their technology was also predominantly organic in nature. At some point, the Yuuzhan Vong found themselves embroiled in a catastrophic galactic conflict between two droid civilizations—thought to be the Silentium and the Abominor. This experience cemented their aversion to mechanical technology and fostered xenophobia toward other sentient beings.

Their living homeworld aided them in the war by giving them the knowledge to craft living weapons. Yet, as the war continued, the Yuuzhan Vong grew increasingly aggressive and inclined towards warfare. Ultimately, they triumphed over their adversaries, compelling both droid factions to abandon their galaxy.

In the aftermath of the war, the Yuuzhan Vong embarked on a mission to purge their galaxy of all mechanical technology. They seized control of vast portions of their galaxy, either annihilating or enslaving the species they conquered. Among these subjugated species were the reptilian Chazrach, who were forced to serve as slave soldiers for the Yuuzhan Vong.

With control over much of the galaxy, the various Domains (akin to Yuuzhan Vong clans or families) dissolved into infighting, triggering the destructive Cremlevian War. This conflict resulted in widespread devastation across the Yuuzhan Vong's galaxy, including the destruction of their homeworld, Yuuzhan'tar. The precise circumstances of the planet's demise have been lost to time. Nevertheless, Yuuzhan'tar did produce a seed that eventually evolved into Zonama Sekot, later colonized by the Langhesi and Ferroans.

Having lost their original symbiotic connection with their homeworld, the Yuuzhan Vong were cut off from the Force, causing them immense suffering. Consequently, they came to view pain as the sole path to regaining that symbiosis and engaged in body modifications. Replacing their homeworld, the Yuuzhan Vong embraced belief in multiple deities, who subsequently governed nearly all facets of their civilization.

The Yuuzhan Vong made the exodus from their galaxy onboard their great Worldships.

Near the end of the war, Steng rose to prominence as the first Warmaster. A rival Warmaster, Yo'gand, devised the Yo'gand's Core tactic, which he employed to obliterate the planet Ygziir and its moon. The destruction of Ygziir led to Steng's death and the war's conclusion. Ultimately, Yo'gand unified the Domains into a single socio-political entity and became the first Supreme Overlord of the Yuuzhan Vong.

With much of their galaxy in ruins, the Yuuzhan Vong embarked on a lengthy journey to another galaxy in search of a new home. For a considerable period, possibly centuries, the species was compelled to traverse the Intergalactic Void aboard massive worldships. During this time, the Yuuzhan Vong nearly self-destructed. Violence and competition were ingrained in their society, and without an external focus, they turned their aggression inward. Although no wars of the scale of the Cremlevian War occurred, the Domains continued to vie for the Supreme Overlords' favor.

Pre-invasion

Vergere is captured by the Yuuzhan Vong

The duration of the Yuuzhan Vong's voyage after leaving their galaxy, or whether they even knew their destination, remains a mystery. One account suggests their journey spanned several millennia; however, by 26 ABY, one of the oldest worldships (deemed 'ancient' and nearing its end) was less than 1000 years old. It seems that by 3997 BBY, sometime after Exar Kun became the new Dark Lord of the Sith, the Praetorite Vong's slivilith probe creatures had arrived, and as of 3963 BBY, at least one scout had reached the Wild Space region of the known galaxy. In that year, a group of Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders under the leadership of Canderous Ordo encountered what would later be identified as a Yorik-stronha, disguised as an asteroid in the Crispin system, while pursuing pirates in the system's asteroid belt. When Ordo used a thermal generator to melt the frozen methane covering the "asteroid", the Yorik-Stronha, in Ordo's words, "woke up". The asteroid began to spin quickly and then proceeded to fire plasma at the Mandalorians. The extragalactic weaponry was able to melt through the Mandalorian's armor "like wax". The attack on the Mandalorians became the "first contact" with the Known Galaxy. The probe fled soon after the brief battle with Ordo's Mandalorians. Ordo followed in hot pursuit, but was unable to keep up with the probe. The Mandalorians were able to track the probe's hyperspace wake to the edge of the galaxy, where the Neo-Crusaders turned back, apparently thinking that the mysterious ship was going on a suicide run into the great void outside the galaxy. Also in this general time frame, a female Shaper arrived in the galaxy in suspended animation, crashing on Lorrd and surviving there for several decades, interacting with locals who believed her to be a demon.

Between 229 and 89 BBY, the living planet Zonama Sekot—a seed of Yuuzhan'tar—arrived in the Gardaji Rift. In 33 BBY, a Yuuzhan Vong was captured and ended up in Cog Hive Seven, a prison colony wherein deadly gladiatorial matches regularly took place between inmates. The Yuuzhan Vong, who had already killed two fellow inmates in transit to the colony, quickly emerged as the station's most recent champion. For six months, the warrior systematically defeated every opponent pitted against the Yuuzhan Vong, until the champion was matched with Sith Lord Darth Maul, who was on an undercover mission on Cog Hive Seven. After a brutal fight, (where the Sith was under orders to not use the Force and, of course, could not passively sense anything of his foe's planned moves) Maul killed the warrior. As the Yuuzhan Vong had only spoken in the species' native language, the colony's systems had failed to classify its species, point of origin, or even gender, although some of the guards suspected that the individual was a female.

In 32 BBY, during the Invasion of Naboo, an advance party of Yuuzhan Vong—referred to as "Far Outsiders" by the planet's inhabitants—discovered Zonama, and noting the similarity to Yuuzhan'tar (though not drawing the connection) attempted to colonize it. However, when the Yuuzhan Vong attempted to settle, Zonama Sekot's biosphere killed off the Yuuzhan Vong flora and fauna, provoking them. Although Sekot attempted to negotiate with them, they began an assault upon the planet. After two years of costly fighting, the assault was called off with the arrival of the Jedi Knight Vergere, who convinced the Yuuzhan Vong to leave on the condition that she would travel with them. The Galactic Republic received only shadowy news at the attack; even after Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan Anakin Skywalker went to investigate Vergere's disappearance, all that they discovered was that an unknown race of biotech-based aliens from a distant place and armed with weapons that the planet's inhabitants had never seen before had attacked the world.

By 29 BBY, after learning of Zonama Sekot, Supreme Overlord Quoreal's resolve to invade began to weaken. The Yuuzhan Vong soon learned that Zonama Sekot was no longer in its original system, and there was no evidence that it had been destroyed. Worried about the threat presented by the powerful planetary entity, he announced to his people that it would be best to move on to another galaxy. However, Shimrra Jamaane, under the influence of Onimi and with the support of some of the more aggressive domains, launched a coup, murdered Quoreal and took his place, ensuring that the invasion would go forth as planned. But it would still be some time before they were ready.

Information of Yuuzhan Vong activity within the galaxy for the next few decades is scarce. It is known that, by 27 BBY, at the start of the Outbound Flight Project, Palpatine had somehow gained knowledge of the incoming Yuuzhan Vong fleet, though he planned to withhold it from the Republic until after his New Order could be instituted. At least one of his subordinates, Kinman Doriana, was informed, however. The distant threat of invasion was also part of the reason Palpatine ordered the destruction of Outbound Flight in order to prevent its occupants from falling into the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong (and also to eliminate six Jedi Masters and twelve Jedi Knights). Following the end of the Clone Wars, Emperor Palpatine let out hints of the Yuuzhan Vong to the public. One of his official justifications for maintaining the Imperial Navy even after the war had ended was to ward off the threat of extra-galactic invasion.

It was also around this time that another small reconnaissance force of Yuuzhan Vong engaged the Chiss Defense Fleet, on the edge of the Chiss Ascendancy. Although the Chiss Admiral Ar'alani managed to defeat them, the Yuuzhan Vong fought much better than the Chiss had believed such a small fleet was capable of. The appearance of the Outbound Flight shortly afterwards led the CEDF high command to wonder for a short time if the invaders and the Republic were allies.

Sometime between 27 BBY and 22 ABY, it was speculated by some Chiss that the Yuuzhan Vong had made a pact with the Vagaari against the Chiss.

Yuuzhan Vong scouts returned dozens of kidnapped sentients to the fleet from the galaxy. Among them were Humans, Verpine, and Talz. They were interrogated and experimented upon, with many dying and others being sacrificed. Those who survived (such as Vergere) were awarded as familiars. Around 25 BBY, three years before the Clone Wars, the Yuuzhan Vong also established a small outpost on the planet Bimmiel. After the formation of the Galactic Empire, Imperial scientists established a base on the same planet, suggesting that Palpatine might have had direct contact with the invaders. However, the remains of the Yuuzhan Vong occupying the outpost went undisturbed until their discovery shortly into the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. It is also known that Yuuzhan Vong scouts were active in the galaxy during the Clone Wars.

Nom Anor, agent of the Yuuzhan Vong

The Yuuzhan Vong advance scouts themselves shared that sentiment. After the formation of the Imperial Interim Council in 11 ABY, following the final death of the reborn Emperor Palpatine, Yuuzhan Vong executor Nom Anor was tasked to infiltrate the Council. He did so and manipulated its leader, Xandel Carivus, arranging the deaths of many Councilors and furthering the internal strife between the leaders of the fracturing Empire.

Meanwhile, the Yuuzhan Vong also began meddling in the high politics of the Ssi-ruuvi Imperium. They installed one of their own agents, E'thinaa, in a high-ranking military position, and manipulated the rise to power of the Keeramak, with the goal of eventually using the Ssi-ruuvi to create confusion and disorder during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.

In 24 ABY, Yuuzhan Vong agent Yomin Carr infiltrated the ExGal Society, stationing himself at the ExGal-4 base on Belkadan located along Vector Prime.

In 25 ABY, Yuuzhan Vong executor Nom Anor struck a deal with Boba Fett to have him and a select group of Mandalorian aid the invasion force. Fett realized that openly resisting the Yuuzhan Vong would result in the enslaving of Mandalore and so he agreed. He secretly carried out a plan to aid the New Republic by allowing New Republic personnel to escape with information from doomed worlds. This resulted in the escape of the Jedi Knight Kubariet on the world of New Holgha.

Invasion of the galaxy

The Yuuzhan Vong invade the galaxy

On the world of Rhommamool, Yuuzhan Vong executor Nom Anor, disguised as the leader of the Red Knights of Life, stirred up a war between Rhommamool and its neighboring planet, Osarian. He was also responsible for infecting Mara Jade Skywalker and a hundred other diplomats with a deadly Yuuzhan Vong disease. As a result the New Republic did not take notice when the first of the invasion force, the Praetorite Vong, made planetfall on the distant world of Helska IV and also brought down Sernpidal's moon upon the planet, killing millions of beings including the famous Wookiee Chewbacca, and leaving the planet itself in pieces. The Yuuzhan Vong also encountered the Jedi, whom they started to consider the worst of a galaxy full of infidels, due in no small part to the Jedi's ability to control a supernatural force that Yuuzhan Vong had been denied. The Praetorite Vong were eventually defeated by galactic heroes Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa Solo and Lando Calrissian.

The main Yuuzhan Vong fleet arrived soon after though, and had in short order conquered many of the worlds in their invasion corridor. Bimmiel, Dantooine, Dubrillion and Obroa-skai were among the many worlds captured while Ithor was consumed by firestorms and rendered uninhabitable. Sheltering the refugees from planets in the invasion corridor quickly became such a problem that the New Republic government could no longer ignore the threat of the Yuuzhan Vong. The political leadership was ineffectual in countering the invaders though, and initially tried to blame the Jedi for starting the conflict with the aliens. The Yuuzhan Vong, considering the Jedi their worst enemies, capitalized on this by luring natives of the galaxy into turning in Jedi with the promise that they would be spared from the invasion. The Peace Brigade appeared as an organization of such individuals.

Warmaster Tsavong Lah

The Yuuzhan Vong also struck a deal with the Hutts that allowed them to pass through Hutt Space unmolested. But the Hutts secretly played both sides by passing information on Yuuzhan Vong fleet movements on to the New Republic. In return the Yuuzhan Vong ruthlessly conquered their worlds. In any case, moving through Hutt Space allowed the invaders to launch an attack against Fondor on the far side of the galactic core. However, they suffered heavy losses in the Battle of Fondor when Han Solo's cousin, Thrackan Sal-Solo, fired Centerpoint Station against them, destroying much of the defending Hapan fleet too.

Following the conquest of Duro, Warmaster Tsavong Lah offered the New Republic a cease fire if they turned over every single Jedi in the galaxy. The Jedi became hated as never before, with several planetary governments collaborating with the Yuuzhan Vong in hunting them down, and even resulting in the New Republic temporarily issuing an arrest warrant for Jedi Masters Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker.

The Peace Brigade also launched an attack on the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 in an unsuccessful attempt to capture the children being trained there. The Yuuzhan Vong themselves arrived shortly after though, complicating the situation for the few Jedi remaining on the moon. The Yuuzhan Vong captured the Jedi trainee Tahiri Veila and started shaping her like the rest of their biological creations. However, before the experiment was completed, she was rescued by her best friend, Anakin Solo, with the help of the shamed Yuuzhan Vong, Vua Rapuung, redeeming the Shamed One in the process. As a result, a heretical movement that worshiped the Jedi as saviors gained popularity among the Shamed Ones (later led by Nom Anor), despite the efforts of the ruling castes to exterminate it. A short while later, the Yuuzhan Vong broke the cease fire by launching a surprise attack on Yag'Dhul.

A single New Republic soldier tries to hide from the Yuuzhan Vong, while the New Republic crumbles under their relentless invasion

Two years into the war, the Yuuzhan Vong unleashed a new biological creation, the voxyn, for the purpose of hunting down the Jedi. In response, Anakin Solo formed an all-Jedi strike with the intent of hunting down the Voxyn Queen from which the Yuuzhan Vong cloned all the other voxyn. The mission was a success, but came at the cost of the lives of nearly half the team, including Anakin Solo himself, and also left his brother, Jacen Solo, captured by the Yuuzhan Vong. Meanwhile the Yuuzhan Vong launched an immense attack on Coruscant, conquering the capital of the New Republic and killing Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya. Following that, they renamed the planet Yuuzhan'tar, and started Vongforming the planet in the image of their long lost homeworld. The Vongforming of Coruscant was sabotaged by Jacen Solo before he escaped from captivity with the aid of Vergere. The Yuuzhan Vong began to also suffer from internal problems, as the stresses of maintaining an Empire began to tax their resources.

The New Republic, having moved its capital to Dac, elected Cal Omas to replace Fey'lya, who also created the High Council, which would coordinate the Jedi's role in the war. At the same time the Jedi also found out about the NRI's secret project to create Alpha Red, a biological weapon that would wipe out the Yuuzhan Vong and all of their creations. The Jedi were unable to convince Cal Omas to ignore the weapon as a viable option for countering the invaders, but the rogue Jedi Knight Vergere saved them the trouble by destroying the project herself. However, the incident strained the relationship between the Jedi and the New Republic.

Forced to pursue conventional warfare while the Alpha Red team started from scratch, the New Republic hatched a plan to lure the Yuuzhan Vong into a trap in the Deep Core, centered around the moon, Ebaq 9. Using Jedi Knight Jaina Solo as bait, the trap was successfully sprung on the Yuuzhan Vong fleet, destroying it. On Ebaq 9, Warmaster Tsavong Lah himself was slain by Jaina Solo and Vergere sacrificed herself to eliminate the rest of the Yuuzhan Vong troops that had landed on the moon. Omas, using the political clout and fearing that the Senate would try to hijack control of the war, drafted a new constitution which stripped the Senate of executive power, turning the New Republic into the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances (Galactic Alliance or GFFA for short).

Luke Skywalker battles Supreme Overlord Shimrra Jamaane to the death

After their triumph, Luke Skywalker assembled a team to investigate the data Vergere had provided concerning Zonama Sekot, the sentient planet. They ventured into the Unknown Regions, and with a quid pro quo arrangement, they secured assistance from both the Imperial Remnant and the Chiss Ascendancy. Ultimately, they located the living world and initiated discussions, aiming to persuade it to aid in ending the conflict.

Simultaneously, the disgraced Executor Nom Anor, his reputation tarnished by the Ebaq 9 catastrophe, adopted the guise of the prophet Yu'Shaa and instigated sedition on Yuuzhan'tar (formerly Coruscant). Upon learning of Zonama Sekot, he masterminded a mission to the living planet, which included himself (still disguised), the Shaper [Nen Yim](/article/nen_yim), the Yuuzhan Vong priest [Harrar](/article/harrar), and the Jedi Knights Tahiri Veila and [Corran Horn](/article/corran_horn-legends). Reaching Zonama Sekot, Nom Anor revealed his true nature, murdering Nen Yim and casting Harrar off a cliff before attempting to sabotage the planet's hyperdrive. While the two Jedi failed to thwart his sabotage or prevent his escape, Zonama Sekot seemingly knew its course of action, launching itself into hyperspace and assuming orbit around the same star as Yuuzhan'tar, the galaxy's previous capital.

During this period, the [Galactic Alliance](/article/galactic_federation_of_free_alliances) prepared an offensive to reclaim Yuuzhan'tar, aiming to cripple the Yuuzhan Vong's war capabilities by eliminating their Supreme Overlord. As it turned out, Supreme Overlord Shimrra was merely a figurehead for the true leader of the Yuuzhan Vong, the Force-sensitive Shamed One [Onimi](/article/onimi). Luke Skywalker slew Shimrra, and Jacen Solo later killed Onimi during [the second battle of Coruscant](/article/battle_of_yuuzhan%27tar). [Nas Choka](/article/nas_choka), who succeeded Lah as Warmaster, took command as the _de facto_ Supreme Overlord and commanded the remaining Yuuzhan Vong warriors to lay down their arms.

One condition of the Yuuzhan Vong's capitulation was their participation in rebuilding Coruscant to serve as the Galactic Alliance's capital. The Galactic Alliance temporarily relocated to [Denon](/article/denon-legends) while reconstruction was underway, eventually returning to [Coruscant](/article/coruscant-legends) upon its completion.

Zonama Sekot also revealed itself to be the seed of the Yuuzhan Vong's ancient, deceased homeworld. Following the war's conclusion, the remaining Yuuzhan Vong were summoned from across the galaxy to Zonama, where they were to be confined (except for designated Vong tasked with repairing the damage their people had caused; those who refused exile faced execution). Zonama Sekot, now populated by the Yuuzhan Vong, vanished back into the Unknown Regions, allowing the Yuuzhan Vong to reside peacefully and revitalize their bond with Sekot. Among their objectives were abolishing their caste structure, and they had already dissolved the positions of Warmaster and Supreme Overlord (although Choka appeared to remain the _de facto_ leader of the species).

The [Bothans](/article/bothan-legends), however, remained unforgiving for Fey'lya's death and maintained their declared state of _ar'krai_, a war of genocide, against the Yuuzhan Vong, dispatching vessels into the Unknown Regions to locate Zonama Sekot. By [36 ABY](/article/36_aby), the Galactic Alliance had somewhat thwarted their efforts by impounding the ship intended for the expedition.

The Yuuzhan Vong War stood as perhaps the most devastating crisis the galaxy had ever encountered. The loss of life was immense, with estimates reaching approximately 300 trillion sentients across the known galaxy.

The Galactic Alliance gradually rebuilt itself in the years that followed, but it never fully recovered to its pre-invasion New Republic state. Sometime after [41 ABY](/article/41_aby), in an effort to foster improved relations between the Yuuzhan Vong and the rest of the galaxy, the Galactic Alliance's [New Jedi Order](/article/new_jedi_order) permitted Yuuzhan Vong [Shapers](/article/shaper_caste), led by Master Shaper [Nei Rin](/article/nei_rin), to utilize a desolate area of [Ossus](/article/ossus-legends), one of the order's most ancient strongholds, as a testing ground.

The intention of those who advocated for the project—such as [Jedi Master](/article/jedi_master-legends) [Kol Skywalker](/article/kol_skywalker), a prominent member of the [Jedi Council](/article/jedi_council-legends)—was to determine whether Vong terraforming techniques, like those that had once transformed [Coruscant](/article/coruscant-legends) into the species' temporary homeworld of Yuuzhan'tar ([27](/article/27_aby-legends)-[29 ABY](/article/29_aby-legends)), could revitalize the barren and ravaged world. While most of the species had departed for the Unknown Regions on Zonama Sekot, enough shapers remained to initiate a pilot program on the world. The experiment appeared successful, restoring vibrant life to Ossus, and when the Jedi unveiled the results to the wider galaxy, other worlds competed for the opportunity to restore planets devastated by the [Yuuzhan Vong War](/article/yuuzhan_vong_war).

Ultimately, one hundred planets were chosen for terraforming. Yuuzhan Vong Shapers, accompanied by [Jedi](/article/jedi-legends), commenced their work, and initially, the results were astonishing. Unfortunately, none had anticipated interference from the [One Sith](/article/one_sith). Under the command of the cult's leader, [Darth Krayt](/article/darth_krayt), the [Sith](/article/sith-legends) secretly sabotaged the terraforming process on these worlds. Plants grew deformed, and agonizing bony growths, reminiscent of those seen when the Vong forcibly enslaved populations, erupted from the skin of the inhabitants, resulting in millions of deaths.

The Jedi suspected sabotage but were unaware of the perpetrator. Across the galaxy, however, blame fell on the Yuuzhan Vong. Too much animosity lingered against the former invaders for many to believe they had genuinely abandoned their ambitions of conquest. The Jedi, however, were convinced of the Yuuzhan Vong's innocence and persuaded the [Galactic Alliance](/article/galactic_federation_of_free_alliances) to support the Yuuzhan Vong against domestic criticism.

This proved to be too much for the [Empire](/article/fel_empire). The signing of the [Pellaeon–Gavrisom Treaty](/article/pellaeon%e2%80%93gavrisom_treaty) ([19 ABY](/article/19_aby-legends)) had established peace between the Imperial Remnant and the [New Republic](/article/new_republic-legends), and the war against the Yuuzhan Vong had largely united the former adversaries. However, the [Moff Council](/article/council_of_moffs-legends) still harbored many hardliners who sought to restore the Empire to its position as the dominant galactic power. Invoking the [Treaty of Anaxes](/article/treaty_of_anaxes) and demanding retribution, they declared war on the Galactic Alliance. The peace that so many had fought and died for in decades past was undone in a single stroke, just as the Sith had planned.

Fearing the potential consequences, the [Jedi High Council](/article/jedi_high_council_(new_jedi_order)) ordered the establishment of the [Hidden Temple](/article/hidden_temple_(sith%e2%80%93imperial_war)) at the onset of hostilities, its location chosen by [Nat Skywalker](/article/rawk) to provide the Jedi with a refuge.

From the outset, the Alliance was at a disadvantage. Its defense of the Yuuzhan Vong had alienated numerous member worlds, whose populations still harbored bitter memories of the Vong invasion, and many refused to support the GA. The Alliance suddenly faced a secessionist movement alongside a general war. The Empire exploited this, enticing some of these disgruntled worlds into the Imperial camp and weakening the GA government. Other worlds, such as Hapes, declared neutrality. Thus, the war began with the Empire holding all the advantages, except for one: Despite this, [Emperor](/article/galactic_emperor-legends) [Roan Fel](/article/roan_fel) himself was unenthusiastic; he had only reluctantly declared war and thus never fully committed to it, even preventing his [Imperial Knights](/article/imperial_knight) from participating.

During this time, events were not progressing smoothly for the Fel Empire: despite the Alliance's handicap, the Jedi more than compensated. Furthermore, because Roan Fel refused to allow the Imperial Knights to enter the war, the Empire lacked the necessary strength to counter the Jedi. Soon, the Sith inserted themselves into the conflict, offering to compensate for the lack of Force users that was the significant weakness in Imperial warfare. Through [Moff](/article/moff-legends) [Nyna Calixte](/article/morrigan_corde), the ruthless and ambitious [Director of Imperial Intelligence](/article/director_of_imperial_intelligence), the Sith approached the Empire and forged an alliance with the Imperial cause. When the Sith openly declared themselves, the Jedi quickly realized that they were responsible for sabotaging the Yuuzhan Vong terraforming projects, although the Order could never definitively prove it. As events unfolded, even members of the Imperial regime—including Emperor Fel himself—recognized the truth: they had been manipulated as pawns in the One Sith's plan for galactic domination. Sadly, by the time the true motivations of the Sith became clear to Emperor Fel, it was too late to halt the designs already set in motion. The Yuuzhan Vong, upon learning the truth, were initially relieved that it was not the work of their gods, and then determined to reverse the damage caused by the sabotage. Shaper Nei Rin journeyed from Ossus to uncover the Sith's sabotage methods, hoping that this knowledge could help discredit the Sith and end the war.

Yuuzhan Vong over a hundred years after the war's end
</InsImage>

After three years of bloody warfare, the Galactic Alliance was exhausted, while the Sith only grew in power and strength, even independently manufacturing and deploying their own [starfighters](/article/fury-class_starfighter). Imperial forces had even retaken Coruscant after more than a century. The Alliance finally surrendered, and its territory was absorbed into the Empire. It remains unknown whether the Empire made any efforts to exterminate the Yuuzhan Vong. The [Emperor](/article/emperor-legends) called on the Jedi Order to surrender and submit to the will of the Empire. Some complied, becoming the [Imperial Knights](/article/imperial_knight). However, the rest, remaining true to the will of the Force, refused to align themselves with the Sith and withdrew from Coruscant to their temple on Ossus. The Sith eventually pursued the Jedi there. Darth Nihl, a former Nagai warlord turned Sith, led a brutal assault on Ossus, aided by Imperial forces under Moff [Rulf Yage](/article/rulf_yage). The [Massacre at Ossus](/article/massacre_at_ossus) scattered the Jedi across the galaxy, although the order was not entirely defeated. Nei Rin returned to Ossus the day after with proof that the Sith had been behind the projects sabotage, but unfortunately too late to stop either the war or the massacre.

Shortly after, the Sith, determined to rule the galaxy themselves, turned against Emperor [Roan Fel](/article/roan_fel) and his Imperial Knights. After killing what he later determined to have been a [double of the Emperor](/article/roan_fel%27s_double), Darth Krayt assumed the Imperial throne himself, restoring, for the first time in over a century, the rulership of a Sith as Emperor, and becoming the first Sith Lord since Darth Caedus to rule over most of the galaxy.

Although most of the Yuuzhan Vong who accompanied the Jedi in the Ossus Project perished, three survived, remaining beneath the Jedi Temple and guarding the remains of the fallen Jedi out of respect for the Jedi Order. Master Shaper [Nei Rin](/article/nei_rin) had been off-world investigating the project's failure but returned to Ossus with her findings too late to prevent the War or the massacre. Shortly afterward, Rin, her guards, and a few Jedi who had returned to the world were hiding from an Imperial patrol under the temple when the patrol's Sith commander ordered the Academy destroyed from orbit. Fortunately, thanks to [Jedi Master](/article/jedi_master-legends) [K'Kruhk](/article/k%27kruhk), the occupants managed to survive.

After some time, it was revealed that a fanatical Yuuzhan Vong named [Zenoc Quah](/article/zenoc_quah) had survived the war and had hidden on [Wayland](/article/wayland-legends) for over a century before allying with the One Sith to sabotage the Ossus Project. Seven years later, he was part of [Darth Maladi](/article/darth_maladi)'s plot to overthrow [Darth Wyyrlok](/article/darth_wyyrlok_(iii)) from the rule of the Empire and install a new, more powerful [Dark Lord](/article/dark_lord_of_the_sith-legends) at the helm. Quah and Maladi collaborated to create a new weapon to secure their hold on the galaxy from dissident Sith. To this end, Maladi and Quah set up a [trap](/article/wayland_trap) to capture [Cade Skywalker](/article/cade_skywalker) as their test subject.

## Technology

Due to their convictions, the Yuuzhan Vong opposed technology, from simple machines to droids, believing them to be a polluting influence. Consequently, all their technology consisted of living [biots](/article/biot): organisms bred and trained for specific tasks. They favored these creatures over inanimate machines, which they believed lacked a spirit. All Yuuzhan Vong technology, including starships, weapons, and everyday objects, was entirely biological. They detested droids, machines, electronics, and anything manufactured. The Shapers coaxed this biotechnology into growth, and it appeared to be more resilient than conventional technology.

Notable examples of their technology included the dreaded [yammosks](/article/yammosk), referred to as war coordinators because they served as a biotic [Battle Analysis Computer](/article/battle_analysis_computer) and could coordinate Yuuzhan Vong forces with alarming precision. Through their [villips](/article/villip), they established a communication system rivaling the galactic HoloNet. Different breeds of these organisms could also produce living light holograms, which the Yuuzhan Vong had mastered for centuries. Their collision avoidance systems were known to be as effective as those of other galactic inhabitants. Furthermore, their equivalent of an antenna consisted of spiral fibers embedded in a yorik coral hull, sensitive to receiving communications. Additionally, they utilized nutrient feeds for various biots, serving a similar function to power lines for technological equivalents. Similar to [navigation computers](/article/navigation_computer-legends), Yuuzhan Vong vessels possessed [navibrains](/article/navibrain) necessary for plotting hyperspace jumps. Their vessels also required rearming after combat, a process noted as being marginally superior to that of technological galactic inhabitants.

Yuuzhan Vong personal weaponry included living serpentine weapons called amphistaffs, capable of altering their form to function as a spear or whip. Furthermore, they wore [Vonduun Skerr Kyrric](/article/vonduun_skerr_kyrric) armor, which protected them from weapon fire and lightsaber strikes. Their larger coral-shaped craft employed [Yaret-Kor](/article/yaret-kor) plasma weapons that corroded enemy ship hulls, while shielding was provided by gravity-manipulating [dovin basals](/article/dovin_basal) that generated singularities to protect the craft from enemy weapon fire and strip enemy vessels' shields. These organisms were grown separately and then grafted onto other organisms in an imperfect symbiosis. Additionally, they generated powerful gravitic fields that could create interdiction fields, rendering living occupants unconscious after being pulled from hyperspace. Larger, more insidious weapons included biological plagues capable of destroying entire worlds, some of which rendered planetary systems barren and incapable of supporting food growth.

The primary construction method through which the Yuuzhan Vong created their living vessels was through the use of [yorik coral](/article/yorik_coral). This coral-like substance formed the hull and internal structure of their vessels. While several other races had mastered bioengineering, the Yuuzhan Vong were among the few to have developed a mass production method for creating such organisms. They could grow coralskippers in less than a month, matching the production rate of the [Incom Corporation](/article/incom_corporation-legends) [X-wing](/article/t-65_x-wing_starfighter-legends) but without producing any waste material from normal industrial techniques. The outer _skin_ of these craft, despite being alive, felt nothing in the vacuum of space, as the nerves were not exposed to the cold void; they were created without nerve endings in those locations. Although the outer hull lacked nerve endings, the inner hull possessed them, and any breach triggered alarms, alerting the Yuuzhan Vong to intruders. A lesser-known fact was that the nerves near the dovin basals were compromised due to the creatures' gravitic nature. As the dovin basals were grown independently, they were nurtured separately and later grafted onto their host vessels. However, the symbiosis was imperfect, and the gravitic distortion created by the dovin basals desensitized the nerve clusters adjacent to them. In warships or other vessels, the Yuuzhan Vong compensated for this problem by implanting special nerve biots around the dovin basal to create a complete tactile net unaffected by the gravitic anomaly. However, certain low-priority ships lacked this amenity, creating blind spots for breaching actions. Inside these ships, many systems had technological equivalents, such as a central biotic computer like the targeting brain. However, sensor systems were the most distinct; instead of externally mounted observatory sensors, the Yuuzhan Vong sensed the gravitational distortions of distant objects to scan their surroundings.

A key interface element within Yuuzhan Vong biots that linked them to their organic ships and technology were cognition hoods. These organic helmets simply slid onto an individual's head and were connected to the ship by an organic cord. Through this connection, a pilot could directly interface with the ship and communicate with it, whether they were organic pilots or droids capable of processing the data sent to the hood. Onboard larger carrier ships, a central cognition hood was used by the ship's commander to issue commands to the vessel. However, if this hood was severed, secondary cognition hoods on smaller craft, such as coralskippers, could send commands from the fighter to the carrier vessel, allowing some level of control. By wearing the hood, a pilot could experience the memories of the ship they were linked to, becoming part of the ship. Yuuzhan Vong ships communicated in the Yuuzhan Vong language, creating a language barrier between foreign pilots and the vessel. However, it was possible to impart images and thoughts through the hood to the ship, allowing it to be controlled. A much larger and more powerful version of these biots was the [cognition throne](/article/cognition_throne).

Some of their more famous technologies were the [amphistaff](/article/amphistaff), the [yorik-et](/article/yorik-et), the [dovin basal](/article/dovin_basal), the [gnullith](/article/gnullith), the [grashal](/article/grashal), the [ooglith cloaker](/article/cloaker), the ooglith masquer, the [villip](/article/villip), and the [yammosk](/article/yammosk).

- Espionage was among the duties of [Nom Anor](/article/nom_anor), an Intendant Caste member. As a key figure in the Yuuzhan Vong's invasion of the galaxy, he bore responsibility for approximately half of it, establishing himself as one of the [New Jedi Order](/article/new_jedi_order)'s most formidable adversaries. He inflicted a near-fatal illness upon Mara Jade Skywalker. His life ended during the Liberation of Coruscant.
- Prior to the invasion, [Quoreal](/article/quoreal) held the position of Supreme Overlord among the Yuuzhan Vong. Shimrra brought about his demise.
- During the invasion, [Shimrra Jamaane](/article/shimrra_jamaane) served as the Supreme Overlord of the Yuuzhan Vong, until [Luke Skywalker](/article/luke_skywalker-legends) ended his reign.
- [Onimi](/article/onimi), a Shamed One and Shimrra's jester, had once been a Master Shaper. By integrating [yammosk](/article/yammosk) tissue into his brain, Onimi gained [power](/article/force_power-legends), but also the stigma of being "shamed." Seeing an opportunity for redemption, Onimi manipulated Shimrra, an Intendant, turning him into a puppet and ruling from the shadows. Jacen Solo ultimately killed him.
- [Nen Yim](/article/nen_yim), a Shaper, journeyed to the living world of [Zonama Sekot](/article/zonama_sekot-legends) alongside Jedi Master [Corran Horn](/article/corran_horn-legends), [Tahiri Veila](/article/tahiri_veila), [Nom Anor](/article/nom_anor) disguised as the Prophet [Yu'shaa](/article/nom_anor), and the Yuuzhan Vong priest [Harrar](/article/harrar). There, she discovered that Zonama Sekot, a peaceful living world, was a seed of the original [Yuuzhan'tar](/article/yuuzhan%27tar), revealing that her species had strayed significantly from its origins. Nom Anor ended her life.
- [Shedao Shai](/article/shedao_shai) engaged in combat with [Corran Horn](/article/corran_horn-legends) for dominion over [Ithor](/article/ithor-legends), suffering defeat, yet the planet met its destruction regardless.
- [Tsavong Lah](/article/tsavong_lah), the Warmaster of the Yuuzhan Vong, stood as another of the [New Jedi Order](/article/new_jedi_order)'s most dangerous adversaries. He even proposed ceasing the invasion in exchange for the New Republic surrendering the Jedi. His appearance was grotesque, marked by numerous organic implants. [Jaina Solo](/article/jaina_solo_fel) killed Tsavong Lah during their duel in the [Battle of Ebaq](/article/battle_of_ebaq).
- [Harrar](/article/harrar), a Priest of [Yun-Harla](/article/yun-harla), recognized the Jedi as a threat early on, consistently advocating for their annihilation. He accompanied Nen Yim to Zonama Sekot, where he was deeply moved by the planet's beauty. He became the first to reject his species' violent path, instead favoring an end to the War.
- [Nas Choka](/article/nas_choka), the Supreme Commander of the Yuuzhan Vong fleet, succeeded Lah as Warmaster. Following the deaths of Shimrra and Onimi, Choka commanded the Yuuzhan Vong to surrender, thereby concluding the war. He took over the leadership of the Yuuzhan Vong after Shimrra and Onimi.
- [Nei Rin](/article/nei_rin), a [Master Shaper](/article/master_shaper) of the Shaper Caste, was an ally of the Jedi before, during, and after the [Sith–Imperial War](/article/sith%e2%80%93imperial_war).
- [Zenoc Quah](/article/zenoc_quah) was a member of the Shaper Caste and a collaborator with the [One Sith](/article/one_sith).
- [Viull Gorsat](/article/viull_gorsat) joined [Garik Loran](/article/garik_loran)'s reformed [Wraith Squadron](/article/wraith_squadron) in 44 ABY. Gorsat, known as Scut, differed from other Vong due to being raised by a human family.

## Behind the scenes

The _Star Wars: The New Jedi Order_ book series, published by [Del Rey](/article/del_rey) from [1999](/article/1999) to [2003](/article/2003), marked the initial appearance of the Yuuzhan Vong. Subsequently, they featured in various other Expanded Universe products.

### Early Proposal

Initially, the editors at Lucasfilm and Del Rey envisioned less exotic antagonists for the _New Jedi Order_, leaning towards villains who harnessed the [dark side](/article/dark_side_of_the_force-legends) of the Force. [George Lucas](/article/george_lucas) vetoed this concept, pointing out in his comments on the story overview that dark siders would struggle to function cohesively due to their inherent lust for power. Lucas, in his critique, prohibited the story team from pursuing this route, urging them to _"be more original"_ and avoid making the villains dark side users. This guidance ultimately spurred the creation of the Yuuzhan Vong as unique antagonists for the series.

### Origins of "Yuuzhan Vong"

The name "Yuuzhan Vong" originated at Vong, a French-Thai restaurant in New York City frequented by several [Del Rey](/article/del_rey) employees. While [Shelly Shapiro](/article/shelly_shapiro) examined a tea menu, the Yunnan region caught her attention. Consequently, "Yunnan Vong" emerged as the preliminary name for the intergalactic invaders.

[R. A. Salvatore](/article/r._a._salvatore) conceived the Yuuzhan Vong's exclusive reliance on biotechnology. Initially, their affinity for pain was limited to [Domain Shai](/article/domain_shai), but it expanded to encompass the entire species, partly influenced by their religious beliefs and relationship with Yun-Yuuzhan, as detailed in the story bible.

### Yuuzhan Vong and the Force

During the war, the Jedi discovered that the Yuuzhan Vong were seemingly "absent" from the Force. [James Luceno](/article/james_luceno) explains the reason for this in his book, _The New Jedi Order: The Unifying Force_. The Yuuzhan Vong were not "absent" from the Force; rather, their entire species had been severed from it. The novel suggests that the intelligence of their homeworld, the seed of which would later become [Zonama Sekot](/article/zonama_sekot-legends), implemented this due to their warmongering and hostile conquest of other species.

### Real world inspirations

Mesoamerican cultures significantly influenced Yuuzhan Vong culture and religion. Immediately before the Skywalker Ranch meeting in 1998, James Luceno had returned from a [Mayan](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/maya_civilization) expedition to Guatemala and had a long-standing interest in Mesoamerican societies. [Steve Saffel](/article/steve_saffel), a Del Rey editor, built upon this by suggesting that the Yuuzhan Vong draw inspiration from the eventual fates of Mayan and [Aztec](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/aztecs) indigenous cultures (_"cultures of inherent tragedy"_) and prompted Luceno with the notion. Luceno then filled in the rest of the story team on Mayan and Aztec cosmology and history. Luceno suggested characterizing the Yuuzhan Vong as _"tragic wanderers rather than hateful invaders"_, with the notion of an invading people being a wandering tribe in search of their _"promised land,"_ being directly inspired by the Aztec search for [Aztlán](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/aztl%c3%a1n). The story team was receptive to the concept, with Michael Stackpole remarking, _"I specifically remember Jim Luceno saying, using the Aztecs, or the cosmology as a model, that that would work out pretty cool... And man, I concurred."_

Further inspirations from, and parallels to, Mesoamerican cultures would be drawn as Luceno set to work on writing the story bible, with him specifically basing the mythology of the god Yun-Yuuzhan on that of the Aztec god [Tlaltecuhtli](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/tlaltecuhtli). The idea of the Yuuzhan Vong sacrificing elements of themselves or others as offerings for the gods was directly taken from Aztec and Mayan practices and beliefs, stemming from the belief in a creator god who sacrificed themselves to create the universe. Mesoamerican ritual tattooing and body modifications to this effect also served as direct inspirations for the Vong. Additionally, Luceno would draw inspiration from the Mayan mythology of the [Hero Twins](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/maya_hero_twins), Hunahpu and Xbalanque, for the roles of Anakin, Jacen, and Jaina Solo and the Yuuzhan Vong's mythological relationship to them.

The notion of the invading force first sending forth those using deception and disguise, arriving in the guise of merchants, traders, or other professions, to infiltrate, spy, and stir up trouble, as characters like Yomin Carr and Nom Anor do throughout the series, was directly inspired by the [pochteca](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/pochteca) of Aztec society, who performed that function for the expansion of the Aztec Empire into surrounding lands. In addition, aspects of the Yuuzhan Vong culture, such as the Shamed Ones and the caste system in general, were inspired by the [Dalit](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/dalit) people of India, commonly known as the "untouchables," as well as the caste system of Mayan society.

The development of the shaper caste was informed by author [Greg Keyes](/article/greg_keyes)' own anthropological background, in which he had previously explored the oral traditions and beliefs of the [Choctaw](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/choctaw) people. For the shapers in particular, Keyes drew upon his experiences in Malaysia where he was exposed to elements of the indigenous culture there; in developing the shapers, Keyes looked to the ancient [Austronesians](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/austronesian_peoples) for inspiration, as well as to their descendants, including the various [Melanesian](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/melanesians) and [Polynesian](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/polynesians) peoples. Some of the naming conventions of the shapers in his novels were drawn from names and mythologies of Pacific origin, such as for [Mezhan Kwaad](/article/mezhan_kwaad). Elements of these cultures also informed the look of characters like Nen Yim and Vua Rapuung, with Greg Keyes advising artist [Terese Nielsen](/article/terese_nielsen) on how to depict them.

The Yuuzhan Vong share several characteristics with other species introduced in the novels. Like the [Yevetha](/article/yevetha), they exhibit fanaticism; similar to the [Ssi-ruu](/article/ssi-ruu), they have a caste system; and akin to the [Charon](/article/charon-legends), they exclusively utilize biotechnology.

### The Clone Wars

[Dave Filoni](/article/dave_filoni) and [Pablo Hidalgo](/article/pablo_hidalgo) revealed at their _The Untold Clone Wars_ panel at [Celebration Anaheim](/article/celebration_anaheim_(2015)) in [2015](/article/2015) that [plans existed](/article/the_clone_wars_legacy#yuuzhan_vong) for the Yuuzhan Vong to potentially appear in the _Star Wars: The Clone Wars_ television series before its cancellation. Filoni's sketches of the species for the show were displayed at the panel. A [The X-files](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/the_x-files)_-_esque episode was planned, where the Yuuzhan Vong aboard their [scout ship](/article/scout_ship) would perform an abduction to assess the strength of the Galactic Republic and the Jedi. According to Hidalgo, the story would have only hinted at the Yuuzhan Vong's origins, and they wouldn't have been immune to the Force.

### Similar canon species

While the Yuuzhan Vong are no longer part of the _Star Wars_ [canon](/article/canon) and are now considered [Star Wars Legends](/article/star_wars_legends), a similar species known as the [Grysk](/article/grysk) debuted in [Timothy Zahn](/article/timothy_zahn)'s [2018](/article/2018) [canon](/article/canon) novel _Thrawn: Alliances_. Like the Yuuzhan Vong, they posed a threat to the [Chiss Ascendancy](/article/chiss_ascendancy) and an invasion of [the galaxy](/article/the_galaxy) was imminent, mirroring the [Yuuzhan Vong War](/article/yuuzhan_vong_war) from _The New Jedi Order_ book series. However, the Grysk did not employ biotechnology, lacked immunity to the Force, and originated in the [Unknown Regions](/article/unknown_regions) instead of an extra-galactic source.
