Mission to Myrkr

The operation known as the Mission to Myrkr, or simply the Mission, was executed by the New Jedi Order in 27 ABY. Its objective was the destruction of the voxyn, creatures engineered to hunt down Jedi. A team of seventeen Jedi Knights, under the leadership of Anakin Solo, infiltrated the worldship called Baanu Rass, which orbited the planet of Myrkr. They successfully eliminated the voxyn queen, but the mission came at a heavy price: six Jedi, including Anakin, perished, and Jacen Solo was taken captive.

The mission

Prelude

As the Yuuzhan Vong War intensified, with planets falling under enemy control, Luke Skywalker, driven by a renewed determination after the birth of his son, Ben, sought to repel the alien invaders. Following the discovery of the Jedi-killing voxyn, a group of Jedi, including the Solo children (Anakin, Jacen, and Jaina) and their companions Tenel Ka, Tahiri Veila, and Zekk, were tasked with destroying the cloning facility located on Myrkr.

Delivery and torture

Lando Calrissian and Tendra Risant Calrissian feigned allegiance to the Yuuzhan Vong, posing as sympathizers from Talfaglio, a planet under Yuuzhan Vong blockade. They transported the seventeen Jedi to a designated meeting point with the Yuuzhan Vong scout ship Exquisite Death. This ship then conveyed the team through the heavily fortified Vong frontier to Myrkr. During their imprisonment, the Jedi endured severe injuries inflicted by Vong torture, with Ulaha Kore nearly succumbing to her wounds. The Yuuzhan Vong commander, Duman Yaght, seeking favor from his superiors, used the voxyn to torture the Jedi individually, displaying particular cruelty towards the already wounded Ulaha and forcing Jaina Solo to choose which of her brothers would be subjected to torment. The resulting injuries varied in severity, ranging from minor bruises, burns, and cuts to more serious wounds. By employing a technique known as Force meld, the Jedi managed to survive. They then overpowered their captors and secured the ship in hyperspace, aided by two of Lando's YVH-Series battle droids, who assisted in eliminating all the Yuuzhan Vong warriors and voxyn on board.

Arrival at Myrkr

The Solo children fight voxyn.

Upon reaching the Myrkr system, several Vong vessels, commanded by Nom Anor and Vergere aboard the Ksstarr, gave chase to the Jedi frigate. Ulaha made the ultimate sacrifice, drawing the enemy away to allow the Jedi strike team to land on the worldship, Baanu Rass, while Anakin's group infiltrated the vessel. Ulaha died shortly after the Jedi disembarked. Once inside Baanu Rass, the Jedi encountered Nightsister Lomi Plo, a secret agent of the One Sith, and her apprentice, Welk. They offered to help the Jedi locate the voxyn queen in exchange for safety and protection.

Under Anakin's leadership, the team avoided a trap in a slave city and on board a captured AT-AT walker, which served as an insect nest. Nom Anor and Vergere relentlessly pursued the group towards the voxyn queen's lair throughout the journey; however, after the encounter in the slave city, Anakin's spleen was ruptured after rashly rescuing his sister. The remaining mission was spent in an attempt to stay away from the Yuuzhan Vong long enough for Anakin to go into a healing trance, as he refused the team to stop the mission because of his wounds. Shortly thereafter, the Jedi arrived at an arena-like area near the Shaper damutek, where the queen was concealed.

As they approached the arena, they discovered a freighter, the Tachyon Flier, which they attempted to repair as a means of escape. While Lowbacca worked on repairing the crashed ship, Raynar Thul recovered from his recent injuries. Lomi Plo and Welk revealed their true allegiance by stealing the ship with Raynar on board, the Sith fleeing into the Unknown Regions.

Anakin Solo's death and mission's conclusion

Determined to complete the mission, the team pressed on. In a rearguard action, a gravely wounded Anakin confronted numerous Yuuzhan Vong, providing the team with the time needed to escape. He also used telekinesis to levitate a thermal detonator to destroy the remaining voxyn tissue, preventing the further creation of the Jedi-hunting creatures. Moments before his demise, Anakin became a radiant pillar of light as he became one with the Force, unleashing all his power to obliterate the Voxyn DNA and any Yuuzhan Vong obstructing his path, even as his dying body was consumed by the power of Ashla. Jaina, overcome with grief, wielded the dark side of the Force to retrieve Anakin's body. After the queen was slain, Jacen, with Vergere's assistance, was captured by Nom Anor. Unable to return to the worldship, Jaina, Tenel Ka, Zekk, Tahiri Veila, Tesar Sebatyne, Alema Rar, Ganner Rhysode, Tekli, and Lowbacca departed Myrkr aboard Ksstarr.

Aftermath and legacy

Following Anakin's death, Jaina struggled with the dark side, and Tahiri, who had shared a romantic connection with Anakin, fell into deep despair. Jacen endured the Embrace of Pain at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong, and was believed to be dead by everyone but his mother; Ganner Rhysode later sacrificed himself to aid Jacen's escape. The Solo family was plunged into deep mourning due to the heavy losses incurred during the mission's bittersweet victory. Luke Skywalker himself deeply regretted not accompanying the team to ensure its success and the guilt remained with him for many years afterwards.

Shortly after being elected Chief of State, one of Cal Omas's initial actions was to organize a ceremony to knight the mission's survivors and honor the fallen.

Six years after the war's conclusion, the Dark Jedi, including Raynar, initiated the Dark Nest Crisis. Due to the extensive use of mind meld in previous years, the survivors, with the exception of Jacen and Tenel Ka, were easily converted into Joiners. Jacen and Tenel Ka had a child, Allana, and fell in love.

During the Second Galactic Civil War in 40 ABY, Jacen embraced the dark side and became the apprentice of the Sith Lady Lumiya, who revealed to him that Vergere had been a Sith. Alema Rar, presumed dead four years earlier, resurfaced seeking revenge on Jacen's family, inadvertently contributing to Jacen's fall; she was later killed. Later in the war, Jacen, now the Sith Lord Darth Caedus, took Tahiri as his Sith Apprentice, corrupting her with false promises of resurrecting the deceased Anakin Solo. The war culminated in Caedus's death at Jaina's hands, while Tahiri, having recognized the error of her ways, was redeemed by the now-teenaged Ben Skywalker.

Of the seventeen Jedi who participated in the mission to Myrkr, only seven—Jaina Solo, Tenel Ka, Tahiri Veila, Lowbacca, Zekk, Tesar Sebatyne, and Tekli—survived both the mission and its enduring consequences.

In 43 ABY, sixteen years after his death, Anakin Solo's spirit appeared to Luke and Ben in the Maw. Expressing that too much had been lost with him, Anakin cautioned his uncle and cousin against repeating his mistakes. He also requested that they convey to Tahiri his enduring love, a message she later received from Anakin's parents.

Behind the scenes

During the writing of Legacy of the Force: Invincible, the ninth and final book in the Legacy of the Force series, Troy Denning proposed an ending in his outline that would have resurrected Anakin Solo: Denning's idea involved Jacen Solo flow-walking back to the Mission to Myrkr to corrupt Tahiri into becoming his apprentice only to make contact and switch places with Anakin. To not alter the past's events, Jacen's body would have been disguised as if it were Anakin's and Anakin's corpse would have been brought back to the present, with Jaina resurrecting him afterwards. This concept was not developed further.

In The New Essential Chronology, it is repeatedly—and incorrectly—referred to as the 'Mission to Wayland'.
