New Jedi Order

The Jedi Order, also known as the New Jedi Order, represented the revitalized and restructured form of the Old Jedi Order. Its genesis occurred following the Great Jedi Purge and the subsequent collapse of the Galactic Empire. The ranks of the Jedi Knights, having dwindled to a mere few, underwent a gradual restoration, primarily under the guidance of Luke Skywalker, the son of Anakin Skywalker, the former Jedi Knight also known as the Chosen One.

Its development was gradual, initially existing as a scattered assembly of Force-sensitive individuals possessing varying levels of training. Following an unsuccessful initial attempt to instruct new Knights that was disrupted by the Reborn Emperor, Luke Skywalker established the first official school for Jedi training in decades, known as the Jedi Praxeum, situated on Yavin 4. Beginning with an original cohort of twelve students, the Order experienced a steady increase in both its membership and influence, evolving into a fundamental component of the New Republic, which served as its sponsor. Consequently, it became a frequent target for adversaries of the Republic, including Imperial Admiral Natasi Daala, the Empire Reborn, and the Second Imperium. Members of the Order actively participated in numerous significant conflicts throughout the galaxy during the New Republic's peak, encompassing events such as the Nagai–Tof War, Operation Shadow Hand, the Black Fleet Crisis, and the Corellian Crisis.

This widespread involvement reached its peak when the Jedi found themselves deeply entangled in the Yuuzhan Vong War. Despite their dedication to safeguarding the galaxy from this menace, the Order faced condemnation from the galaxy's inhabitants and endured multiple instances of betrayal. Their participation in the war resulted in the loss of approximately half of the Order's Knights. Emerging from this conflict, a more unified and centralized Order took shape. It continued to expand and serve the galaxy for many years, until the Sith–Imperial War once again scattered the Order and transformed its members into fugitives. Subsequently, they regained their position in the galaxy at the conclusion of the Second Imperial Civil War.

The New Jedi Order adopted the Alliance Starbird as its symbol, originating from the crest of a Jedi lineage known as the House of Marek.

History

The Transition: From Remnants to Renaissance (4–10 ABY)

Following the near total destruction of the Old Jedi Order at the hands of Emperor Palpatine, only a few survived. Of those, some, like Rahm Kota and Dass Jennir, persisted in their fight against the Galactic Empire, while others went into hiding and abandoned the Jedi path. Eventually, Obi-Wan Kenobi introduced Luke Skywalker to the ways of the Jedi. Luke played a vital role in the Emperor's downfall and the redemption of his father, Anakin Skywalker, who had betrayed the Jedi Order at the onset of the Purge. This positioned Luke as the primary successor to the Order.

Skywalker's initial thoughts about training an apprentice arose shortly after the Battle of Endor. He encountered the clone soldier X2 and assisted him in constructing a lightsaber. Recognizing the potential threat of the clone's brother turning to the dark side, and hearing reports of the rebel misusing his potential, Luke resolved to recruit him as one of his first apprentices. During the Ssi-ruuvi invasions, Skywalker encountered Dev Sibwarra, a young Force-sensitive boy. After rescuing the boy from the Ssi-ruuk, Skywalker intended to train Sibwarra as his first apprentice. However, during the Invasion of Bakura, Dev suffered fatal injuries and died aboard the Millennium Falcon. Due to Sibwarra's death and a growing fear of creating another Vader, Skywalker became hesitant to take on an apprentice.

Luke Skywalker openly fought as a Jedi on Rebel Alliance and New Republic missions.

Around the time of the Nagai–Tof War, Skywalker received numerous requests for training from young freedom fighters aspiring to become Jedi Knights, but his reluctance persisted. He declined to train them, claiming he was not yet ready to take on apprentices. When Luke began instructing new recruits to the Rebellion in warfare, including individuals like Kiro, Barney, and the Rik Duel gang, they expected to learn the Force but were disappointed when Luke refused to teach them Force techniques. These refusals had negative consequences, as Flint, one of the first to request training, became bitter and turned to the dark side after being rejected.

Luke's hesitation to take on an apprentice continued until he faced the consequences of his reluctance. A young woman named Vila sought training from Luke, and when he refused, she took him to Naldar to assist in the liberation of the planet. On Naldar, Luke encountered Flint, now wielding the power of the dark side. In the ensuing battle, Vila was killed, and Flint was apprehended and placed in the custody of the New Republic. Luke realized that succumbing to the fear of failure was not the correct path. He informed the Iskalonian Kiro that he would begin training him, but Kiro went missing in action during the Nagai-Tof War and became disillusioned with the idea of becoming a Jedi. After this difficult start, Luke postponed his plans for a new Jedi Order.

For several years afterward, Skywalker continued to refine his skills as a Jedi Knight throughout the galaxy. During this period, he made numerous discoveries related to the Jedi on planets such as Circarpous V, Toola, and Dathomir, and briefly taught Prince Isolder the basic principles of the Force. As Isolder was not Force-sensitive, he provided a risk-free student for Luke to practice on. It was also during this time that Skywalker met many individuals who would later become members of his Jedi Order, most notably Kyle Katarn, whom Skywalker encountered in 4 ABY during the Valley of the Jedi crisis. Katarn already possessed a lightsaber that had belonged to Qu Rahn and had some basic understanding of the Force, having mastered Force powers such as Force speed.

The emergence of the cloned Palpatine prompted Skywalker to abandon his solitary existence. As predicted by Bodo Baas's Master a millennium earlier, this was a crucial moment in Jedi history. Facing a seemingly invincible enemy, Skywalker chose to train under the Emperor to undermine the Empire from within. However, in doing so, he succumbed to the influence of the dark side. His sister, Leia Organa Solo, brought him back to the light side and stole a valuable Holocron from the Emperor. While evading Imperial forces, Luke and Leia gathered a group of Force-sensitive individuals whom Luke began to instruct. These included the redeemed Kam Solusar, Vima-Da-Boda, the Ysanna siblings Jem and Rayf, and Empatojayos Brand, a survivor of the Great Jedi Purge.

Defeating the Emperor came at a cost: Jem, Rayf, and Brand lost their lives, while Vima retreated into the underworld. Luke also suffered a great loss, as his experience under the influence of the dark side left a permanent scar on his soul. However, he gained a greater appreciation of his own strength and a deeper understanding of what it would take to restore the Jedi Knights to the galaxy. This realization, combined with his enhanced powers, made Luke the first new Jedi Master of the reborn Jedi Order. Other achievements included the redemption of Kam and the acquisition of the Bodo Baas holocron.

The Jedi Praxeum Era (11–18 ABY)

Jedi at the Praxeum fight Exar Kun's spirit.

During the Thrawn campaign, Obi-Wan Kenobi appeared to Luke in a vision. Knowing he would no longer appear in Luke's visions, he tasked Luke with restoring the Jedi. Luke was deeply troubled by being the last of the old Jedi, but Obi-Wan's final thought brought a chuckle and a sense of calm: "Not the last of the old Jedi, Luke. The first of the new."

Encouraged by this, and after the defeat of the cloned Emperor, Luke sought permission from the New Republic to establish a Jedi academy. During his travels, he had discovered several Force-sensitives and finally felt ready to begin training new Jedi. Permission was granted, and a site on the historic moon Yavin 4 was chosen. The first class consisted of twelve students with Luke as their teacher, including Kam Solusar and Tionne, Kirana Ti, Dorsk 81, Streen, Gantoris, Madurrin, Kyle Katarn, Brakiss, and Corran Horn. Other Jedi who joined soon after included Kyp Durron, Cilghal, Mara Jade, and Dal Konur.

It soon became clear that all was not well at the Academy. The spirit of Exar Kun, an ancient Sith Lord, haunted some of the temples on the moon and began to influence Luke's students toward the dark side. Kun attacked Luke, putting him into a coma, and Kyp Durron, one of the most promising students, fled the Academy in the Sun Crusher, causing chaos in the galaxy and destroying the world of Carida.

Eventually, Luke awoke, and the Sith spirit was defeated by a joint Jedi offensive. The praxeum also suffered an assault by a group of Dark Jedi artificially infused with the Force, led by Luke's own fallen apprentice Desann. These were just some of the many trials that lay ahead for the fledgling Order, with subsequent attacks directed against it by Admiral Daala, the Empire Reborn, and the Second Imperium.

Expansion and Development (18–22 ABY)

A group of Jedi ambush an Imperial Juggernaut during the assault by Admiral Daala.

Despite these setbacks, the Jedi Order continued to grow and serve the galaxy. The Order was also augmented by recruits from other Force traditions, such as the Iron Knights, the Jensaarai, the Matukai, and students from the School of Hidden Wisdom. Other students were recruited in various ways, from Cheryl Trinja, a Force-natural found on a jungle planet by a group of Republic agents and trainees, to the Old Republic Jedi Knight rescued from imprisonment by his former apprentice Winslau Da'k on the Unknown Regions planet Morcanth. New Republic Intelligence also began providing Skywalker with information on potential candidates.

Jedi Knights played crucial roles in disabling the Eye of Palpatine battlestation, preventing the spread of the Death Seed plague, and stopping the Disciples of Ragnos, a cult aiming to resurrect the Sith Lord, Marka Ragnos. They also participated in neutralizing Centerpoint Station during the Corellian Crisis. During this period, research missions increased, with investigations on planets such as Chandrila, Ossus, Kamino, Korriban, Ruusan, Barab I, and Borgo Prime. One such mission to the Deep Core resulted in the capture of a Jedi Knight. A rescue team was dispatched and managed to trace the captors to Prakith, the Imperial fortress world and home of the Citadel Inquisitorius. Confronting Inquisitor Shynne, the team successfully rescued the Knight. Other successes included Eelysa dismantling several slave rings in the Outer Rim, Fahjay thwarting an assassination attempt against Admiral Gial Ackbar, and the Jedi Knights negotiating a peace accord between the warring Drovian and Gopso'o tribes on Nim Drovis, ending a generations-long conflict. The Jedi also embarked on diplomatic missions, such as to Iridonia.

Discoveries of Jedi relics, such as Jedi armor on Garn, lightsabers on Ossus, Asli Krimsan's holocron on Vjun, and Arca Jeth's holocron on Arkania, enriched the Order's knowledge of ancient Jedi practices. Many of these practices were implemented, such as pairing Masters with apprentices and forming Jedi clans. However, some practices were not adopted, such as the Jedi prohibition on marriage, as it was a hidden marriage (between Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala) that had led to the destruction of the Old Jedi Order. Instead, the new Order permitted marriage, even conducting Jedi ceremonies for Tionne and Kam Solusar, and later in 19 ABY, for Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade. Many other Jedi, such as Kirana Ti, Corran Horn, Daye Azur-Jamin, and Tyria Sarkin Tainer, married non-Force-sensitives, with their children becoming the next generation of Jedi trainees. The strict separation from family practiced by the Old Order was also disregarded, with employment and accommodation provided for trainees' families around the Academy.

The Junior Jedi Academy Takes Shape (22–25 ABY)

Following his marriage, Luke Skywalker restructured the curriculum at his Yavin training facility to accommodate younger students. Inspired by his former Master, Yoda, who had taught him that younger students were easier to train, he established a Junior Jedi Academy in 22 ABY. In the same year, Jedi trainees Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila discovered the ancient Jedi Master Ikrit and freed the trapped Massassi souls within the Golden Globe, a dark side device created by the Dark Lord Exar Kun in 3997 BBY to drain their souls and fuel his powers. These two Jedi, along with Tionne Solusar, Uldir Lochett, and R2-D2, also discovered the holocron of the ancient Jedi Asli Krimsan at Bast Castle on Vjun, as well as Kenobi's lightsaber, and thwarted Orloc's attempts to establish his own Jedi Order.

Later that year, Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker journeyed to the Unknown Regions to locate the wreckage of the disastrous Outbound Flight expeditionary fleet from the Old Republic in an inaccessible region of space known as the Redoubt. They were accompanied by Chiss Aristocra Formbi, Commander Chak Fel of the Empire of the Hand, New Republic envoy Dean Jinzler, who wished to honor his late Jedi sister by visiting the wreck, and several Geroons, who wished to pay their respects to the Jedi who had freed them from their cruel Vagaari masters. However, upon reaching the wreckage on a planetoid within the Redoubt, they discovered that the survivors had formed a colony and that the Geroons were, in fact, the Vagaari themselves, seeking to avenge their defeat at the hands of the Chiss decades earlier. Nevertheless, the two Jedi, along with the Chiss, the Empire of the Hand, and the survivors of the Outbound Flight, defeated the Vagaari and drove them away.

In 23 ABY, the Jedi Order confronted the Shadow Academy (a Dark Jedi training ground founded by Brakiss) and its ally, the Second Imperium, which rejected the Pellaeon–Gavrisom Treaty signed between the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic in 19 ABY. The Second Imperium kidnapped Jedi trainees, including Luke's niece and nephew, Jaina and Jacen Solo, and their friend Lowbacca, from Luke's Jedi Order. When their attempts to recruit disadvantaged youth failed after the Solo twins and Lowie were rescued by the Solo's close friend Tenel Ka, the Second Imperium was led by four Imperial Guards impersonating Emperor Palpatine. During an assault on the Jedi Praxeum, Luke's Jedi trainees defeated the Second Imperium and the Shadow Academy, eliminating a significant obstacle to the New Jedi Order.

In 24 ABY, the Jedi Order encountered the alien-supremacist, anti-Human Diversity Alliance, which sought to punish the Human species for the atrocities committed by the New Order. The Diversity Alliance attempted to stockpile weapons and locate the Emperor's Plague warehouse for their war against Humans. However, they too were defeated by the Jedi. This was followed by Czethros's attempts to restore the crime syndicate Black Sun to its former glory and dominate the galaxy. However, he too was defeated by the Jedi.

The Ordeal of the Yuuzhan Vong War (25–29 ABY)

During the period of relative peace leading up to 25 ABY, the New Jedi Order appeared to be firmly established as a force in the galaxy once again. The Order now numbered at least 100 Jedi, possibly more, with several Jedi Masters actively training new Padawans. During this time, Luke Skywalker sought permission from the New Republic to reestablish the Jedi Council.

However, with the onset of the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Jedi were confronted with an enemy that would shake their Order to its very core. The invaders turned significant public opinion against the Jedi, leading to Jedi being hunted throughout the galaxy. However, the Jedi received aid from unexpected sources, such as many Priapulin who enlisted as Jedi Auxiliaries to support the Order, as Charza Kwinn had done decades earlier. During this time, divisions arose within the Jedi Order regarding the appropriate approach to take against the invaders. Kyp Durron spearheaded the more aggressive faction, while Luke Skywalker advocated for a more defensive stance. Some of this conflict was resolved with the establishment of a Masters' Council, aimed at creating a unified response for all Jedi.

The Jedi ultimately played a vital role in resolving the war, but the cost was significant. The number of Jedi was halved, and their mindset became far more serious.

Rebuilding and Reorganization (30 ABY—)

Following the Yuuzhan Vong conflict, the Jedi academy was moved to the location of Ossus, while the High Council established a new Jedi Temple on Coruscant. The Jedi Order's numbers surpassed 200 during the time of the Dark Nest Crisis. By the time the Swarm War concluded, Luke Skywalker was formally recognized with the title of Grand Master of the Jedi Order.

Second Galactic Civil War (40–41 ABY)

The fratricidal Second Galactic Civil War

The Jedi Order's influence and power continued to grow, spreading across the galaxy, with training facilities being established in systems like Corellia. As more individuals completed their training and became Jedi Knights, the Council decided to relocate the majority of knights and masters to the Temple on Coruscant, while keeping the Ossus Academy open for the instruction of younglings.

In 40 ABY, the galaxy was thrown into the Second Galactic Civil War. While struggling with the perceived necessity of taking the side of the Galactic Alliance, the Jedi Order did their best to keep the situation from getting worse. During this critical time, a betrayal occurred from within when Jedi Knight Jacen Solo fell to the dark side and became the Sith Lord Darth Caedus. Even though Caedus controlled the Alliance, Luke and the Order differentiated- they were in support of the Alliance, but not an Alliance under Jacen's control. Following the Battle of Kashyyyk, the Order declared its neutrality and created the Jedi Coalition. Efforts then commenced to remove Caedus from his position of power, which forced the Order to secretly retreat to Endor, where they established a temporary base. In 41 ABY, Darth Caedus was slain in a duel by his sister aboard the Anakin Solo. Soon after the war's end, peace returned to the galaxy, and the Jedi Coalition reformed into the New Jedi Order, reuniting with the Galactic Alliance. Lumiya's Sith, the last surviving remnant of the Order of the Sith Lords, ceased to exist with the capture of Tahiri Veila, a former Jedi Knight and Caedus's Sith apprentice turned informant, leading to the belief that the Sith were extinct once more. However, the Jedi were in a state of despair, as many had looked to Jacen for guidance prior to his fall.

Political tensions (43 ABY—)

Following the events of the Second Galactic Civil War, the Order's membership grew to over one thousand Jedi. In the wake of the war, Natasi Daala became the Chief of State of the Alliance and cultivated widespread anti-Jedi sentiment. Over the next two years, tensions between the Jedi Order and Daala's government intensified, reaching a breaking point in 43 ABY. In response to a conflict between rogue Jedi Knight Seff Hellin and Daala's security forces, Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker summoned all Jedi back to the Temple on Coruscant. Shortly thereafter, Jedi Knight Valin Horn developed a mysterious psychosis that caused him to go on a violent rampage, but Skywalker ultimately stopped him. Daala soon had Skywalker arrested for neglecting his duty by failing to prevent Caedus's fall to the dark side, only granting him freedom in exchange for exile without the ability to interfere in the Order's affairs. Skywalker's son, Ben Skywalker, accompanied him in his exile, and they began a quest to uncover the reason for Caedus's descent into darkness.

The Jedi Order faced a resurgence of the Sith.

After Skywalker's exile, Council member Kenth Hamner assumed the role of acting Grand Master, implementing policies that were more focused on appeasing the power-hungry Daala than Skywalker's had been. Hamner even complied with Chief Daala's demand that each Jedi be accompanied by a supervisor chosen by her office while on active duty, although this order was eventually overturned in the courts. While Hamner attempted to placate Daala, he also secretly authorized Jaina Solo to create a clandestine Jedi group known as Darkmeld, which actively worked to sabotage Daala's efforts to control the Order.

Meanwhile, Horn was ordered to be frozen in carbonite until a cure for his psychosis could be found, at which point he would stand trial. Seff Hellin, who was also suffering from the same illness, soon attempted to free Horn, but he was captured by the members of Darkmeld, who hoped to study his condition without Daala's government knowing. Jysella Horn later contracted the same illness and was captured by Galactic Alliance Security after escaping from the Jedi Temple, and like her brother, she was frozen in carbonite. Natua Wan, a Falleen Jedi, succumbed to the mysterious illness at the Coruscant Livestock Exchange and Exhibition, and after causing a panic by releasing all the animals, she was stopped by Leia Organa Solo, Jaina Solo, and Radd Minker.

Around this time, the Lost Tribe of Sith on Kesh sensed Luke Skywalker in the Force after he came into contact with the Codex, recognizing him as the only one capable of stopping them in their quest to restore the Sith Empire. After learning about Skywalker from Ship, a Sith Meditation Sphere, they dispatched an elite strike force to assassinate him.

When Jedi Knights Bazel Warv and Yaqeel Saav'etu contracted the psychosis, the Galactic Alliance once again tried to seize the afflicted Jedi. They failed when Master Cilghal refused to acknowledge a warrant that Daala had obtained by manipulating the courts. While acting Grand Master Hamner was in favor of handing over the Jedi, the Council overruled him and decided to transport their prisoners to Shedu Maad, which was beyond the Galactic Alliance's reach. Jagged Fel and Jaina Solo then informed them that Daala had recruited Mandalorian Supercommandos to seize the Jedi and make it appear as though a group of freelancers were trying to collect a bounty. The Mandalorians were defeated, and the Jedi were evacuated. During this time, a team of Jedi traveled with a large contingent of press to a secret Galactic Alliance Security blockhouse where the Horn siblings were being held. There, they exposed the unfairness of Daala's head judge of the Court of Jedi Affairs, Arabelle Lorteli, and also revealed the disrespect with which the carbonite-encased Horns were being treated by the Galactic Alliance. Shortly after, the Jedi managed to smuggle Saav'etu, Warv, Hellin, and Wan offworld to Shedu Maad.

Soon after, Luke Skywalker and his son were attacked by the Lost Tribe of the Sith's strike team at Sinkhole Station in the Maw. They defeated the Sith, with only one apprentice, Vestara Khai, managing to escape. During the battle, Luke placed a blood trail on Khai so they could track her, hoping to follow her back to her homeworld and find the rest of the Sith.

After her humiliation, Daala retaliated by ordering a squad of Mandalorians to attack the Jedi Temple in an attempt to stop the Jedi resistance. Following the Mandalorians' defeat, arrest warrants were issued for several high-profile Jedi Masters and Knights, including Master Hamner. In 44 ABY, when a group of Jedi Masters led by Saba Sebatyne decided to take a more aggressive stance against Daala, in opposition to Hamner's more lenient approach, the Council dismissed him. When Hamner opposed the launch of StealthX starfighters to aid the Skywalkers, viewing it as treason against the Order and the Alliance, Sebatyne dueled him. Although Saba was only trying to stall or subdue Hamner, her opponent refused to yield, and she ultimately had to let Hamner fall to his death to ensure the Stealth X's launch.

Despite her reluctance and guilt over killing a fellow Master, Sebatyne accepted the position of Grand Master until Skywalker's return from exile. Her first priority was to permanently deal with Daala. Pushed beyond her limit by the Jedi's successful launch, Daala informed Sebatyne, Corran Horn, and Ciilghal of her intention to order the military to destroy the Jedi Order. Acting swiftly, the Jedi launched a coup that removed Daala from power, leading to her arrest and the establishment of a triumvirate. With Saba's position in the new government, she was able to overturn Luke's sentence and end his exile.

When Luke returned to Coruscant, he and the rest of the Council decided to leave Coruscant to find Abeloth and Ship, and in turn lure the Sith out of hiding on Coruscant. The Jedi ultimately emerged victorious in destroying Abeloth and the Lost Tribe of the Sith.

Crisis and revival (c.127 ABY–138 ABY)

Jedi fighting during the Third Jedi Purge.

Over the subsequent nine decades, both the Jedi and a new Sith threat would experience significant growth in numbers. The very foundations of the Jedi Order would be shaken once more, nearly leading to its collapse. Around 127 ABY, the One Sith emerged from the shadows and openly engaged in conflict with the Jedi. With the Galactic Alliance dissolved and the Sith allying with the new Galactic Empire, the Jedi steadily lost ground to their adversaries. The Sith delivered a final blow with a full-scale assault on the temple located on Ossus. Because the Sith launched their attack before all Jedi could gather, approximately half of them survived. The Order went into hiding, pursued by both the Sith and bounty hunters eager to claim the substantial rewards offered for capturing Jedi alive. Cade Skywalker, having abandoned his Jedi training and heritage, became a bounty hunter and even turned in one of his fellow Jedi.

Few Jedi survived Krayt's purge on Ossus. Ahn Rasi Tuum, Hosk Trey'lis, and a Human woman were subsequently killed by the Sith in the ensuing years, while another was killed by the Anzati bounty hunter Sint Yoru. It is assumed that the remaining Jedi either remained in hiding, were killed or captured by the Empire, or found refuge with the Galactic Alliance Remnant. Many members of the order went to the Hidden Temple and took refuge there until discovered by Cade Skywalker. Due to a double agent, the Imperial Knights learned of the Temple's location and came to negotiate with the remains of the Jedi Council for an alliance with the Empire they serve. Having witnessed the inner workings and conflicts within the Sith, Skywalker proposed forming a squad to assassinate Darth Krayt, believing that the Sith would collapse without a unifying leader. While the Council agreed to discuss an alliance with Fel, they rejected Skywalker's assassination plan. Skywalker and his allies proceeded with the plan, and their mission resulted in Krayt's death. More Jedi would eventually emerge from hiding and join the war against Krayt's Empire as it progressed. The Jedi later assisted in the Evacuation of Dac.

The Third Jedi Purge ended with the allied forces of the Jedi, the Galactic Alliance Remnant, and the Fel loyalists winning the Battle of Coruscant. With Darth Krayt's death at the hands of the Jedi Cade Skywalker and the subsequent collapse of the Galactic Empire, the Jedi Order ultimately survived largely intact and was able to reclaim its former position in the Galaxy. Jedi Master K'Kruhk, a former member of the original Jedi Order and the Jedi Council, joined forces with Admiral Gar Stazi and Empress Marasiah Fel to establish the Galactic Federation Triumvirate. Together, the three new triumvirs would govern over a unified galaxy. Despite failing to complete the Jedi Purge or win the Second Imperial Civil War, the One Sith survived the death of their founder and retreated into hiding. Under the leadership of Darth Nihl, the remaining Sith sought to undermine the new order from within by infiltrating every planetary government in the galaxy.

Learning and teaching the ways of the Force

Philosophies

A Jedi Trainer instructing some students in telekinesis.

The new Jedi Order placed a strong emphasis on experiential learning. While they did have formal classes, students were also encouraged to create their own training programs, developing their own distinct ways to approach the Force. Initially, not all students were happy with this approach, especially Corran Horn who eventually left the Order, only to return at a later time.

Luke Skywalker supervised the teaching, but he also delegated teaching duties to students who were particularly skilled in certain areas, these students were known as Jedi Trainers. For instance, Kam Solusar would teach his fellow students lightsaber combat in the early days of the New Jedi Order, while Corran Horn, who had previously worked as a law enforcer with CorSec, would teach unarmed combat and self-defense. Tionne Solusar specialized in Jedi lore and shared her knowledge with her fellow students.

Over time, the new order gained enough skilled Jedi Knights and some Jedi Masters to start approximating the Master-Padawan structure of the Old Order. However, because the New Order still had relatively few members, Masters were assigned multiple students. In line with the learning-by-doing principle, students would accompany Masters on missions to gain experience, and they were sometimes sent on missions alone. Jaden Korr was one student who particularly benefited from this model, as he was apprenticed to Katarn. However, Katarn's other student, Rosh Penin, was unhappy with this model and was once overheard complaining to a fellow Jedi student that he felt his talents were not being nurtured and that Katarn was holding him back. Korr became one of the most skilled Knights in the New Order, while Penin turned to the dark side, but he was eventually redeemed, having learned a lesson about patience.

After two of his students fell to the dark side, Luke Skywalker questioned whether he had made a mistake by not establishing a formal method for training padawans.

The teachings of the New Order differed from those of the Old in several ways, and they were more similar to the practices of the Jedi before the Great Sith War. Jedi were allowed to marry and have families, and each Jedi Master could train multiple apprentices. While popular, wearing Jedi robes was no longer mandatory. For a long time, the Order was also much less centrally controlled, with each Jedi having greater personal freedom and responsibility.

Lightsaber construction

The construction of lightsabers in the new Order was different from that of the old in a number of ways. Luke Skywalker discovered records in Obi-Wan Kenobi's dwelling on Tatooine detailing how to construct lightsabers, which he used himself and later taught to his students. The Jedi also recovered some other techniques, sometimes through less than ideal means. The evil spirit of Exar Kun guided Gantoris in creating a dual-phase lightsaber, which could dramatically extend in length when secondary crystals aligned. Skywalker discovered this, almost at the cost of his life, when the rogue student challenged him to a lightsaber duel. Corran Horn independently constructed a similar lightsaber using a process he obtained from his step-grandfather, Rostek Horn. Occasionally, exceptional students, like Jaden Korr, were able to construct lightsabers on their own, without formal instruction. Luke Skywalker also built a shorter lightsaber, called a shoto, to fight Lumiya during the Nagai-Tof War. This was designed to counter the dual nature of her weapon, known as a lightwhip. Skywalker kept this weapon for many years and taught other Jedi Masters, such as his wife Mara, how to build them.

Tenel Ka's unique lightsaber hilt.

One challenge faced by the new Jedi Order was a lack of high-quality crystals, like those available to the old Jedi Order. Sacred sites like Ilum or the Adega system were lost to the Jedi, so they had to find other sources, which came with danger. Imperial Advisor Bregius Golthan once tried to lure Skywalker into a trap on the planet Canyon, claiming that a source of suitable crystals had been found. However, Luke sent NRI agents in his place, and they managed to escape the trap. On another occasion, Skywalker traveled to the planet Halm to retrieve some adegan crystals from its famous mines. There, he had to fight off Imperial forces who were also after the crystals. The absence of a single, reliable source of lightsaber crystals led to the use of a greater variety of types, resulting in a wider range of blade colors. Some of the more unusual sources included a shard of the Kaiburr crystal used in Luke Skywalker's saber, Gallinorean rainbow gems from a Hapan tiara in Tenel Ka's saber, Corusca gems from the gas giant Yavin used in those of Gantoris and Jacen Solo, and a synthetically manufactured crystal used in Jaina Solo's saber, using a process that was once considered a Sith technique.

As in the days of the old Order, Jedi were encouraged to personalize their hilts to reflect their personalities and backgrounds. Examples of this include Cilghal's, which was silvery and smooth, with subtle indentations common in Mon Calamari technology, Tionne's, which used a spiral mist-horn, and Tenel Ka's, which was made from a rancor tooth. An unusual example of this diversity was Corran Horn's first saber, which was hastily constructed from the throttle of a speeder bike.

Lightsaber training

Kam Solusar and Corran Horn spar at the Jedi Headquarters.

Following the Great Jedi Purge, much of the knowledge surrounding the ancient lightsaber forms utilized by the former Jedi Order vanished. Luke's formal training was also quite limited. However, the establishment of the Jedi academy on Yavin 4 and the arrival of its first students marked the beginning of a journey to rediscover these lost techniques. Kam Solusar instructed the initial cohort in the fundamental principles of swordsmanship, potentially incorporating elements of Shii-Cho, the foundational form upon which all lightsaber combat is built. Specifically, his teachings included the three rings of defense.

Alongside Kam's expertise, knowledge from the Jensaarai may have contributed, as their founders, being Jedi Knights and Padawans, likely retained information on the original lightsaber forms employed by the old Jedi. Furthermore, consider the knowledge acquired by Kyle Katarn, who received fencing instruction during his time at the academy on Carida and later learned lightsaber combat from the spirits of Qu Rahn and Tal. By 14 ABY, the order had cultivated its distinct combat styles, complete with unique Katas and maneuvers. These forms, categorized into Medium style, Fast style, and Strong style, represented a fusion of both old and new techniques, effectively bridging the gap between the original Jedi Order and its successor. Additionally, by 14 ABY, the Academy introduced training sabers, although their use was disparaged by some students, such as Rosh Penin. By 35 ABY, students who had constructed their own Lightsabers were generally referred to as apprentices. The original Jedi lightsaber forms were eventually found again, with knowledge of them recorded by Cin Drallig being included in the Great Holocron.

The new Jedi Order also revived the title of Jedi Battlemaster, with Kyle Katarn being the one to receive it.

Jedi facilities throughout the galaxy

  • Yavin 4 Praxeum ; the primary training center from 11 ABY until its destruction in 26 ABY. The Yavin training grounds were also located here.
  • Coruscant Jedi Headquarters ; a smaller Jedi installation was maintained as an administrative center in the Republic's capital. A separate Jedi training facility was established on Centax-2, a moon of Coruscant.

Ships affiliated with the Jedi Order

The Celador Sash, a Jedi freighter.

To operate effectively across the galaxy, the Jedi Order required a fleet of starships to transport its Knights to various locations. These vessels originated from diverse sources: some were supplied by the New Republic, such as XJ X-wings and StealthX starfighters, while others were donated or acquired from private entities. The Celador Sash was one such freighter, gifted by a trader who had been rescued by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Additionally, some ships were privately owned but closely associated with the Jedi Order's activities, like the Millennium Falcon and Errant Venture. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Praxeum acquired several used ships to transport Jedi discreetly, as many of their starships had become easily recognizable. The Lady Starstorm was one such vessel. Over time, the StealthX fighter was succeeded by the X-83 TwinTail starfighter.

Squadrons

Throughout the numerous conflicts, the Jedi became involved in the mobilization of various starfighter squadrons. Although these squadrons were not exclusively composed of Jedi pilots, they were closely affiliated with the new order.
