The following significant occurrences transpired in the year 3997 BBY.
- Within the Empress Teta system, the Keto cousins orchestrate a military and political coup, overthrowing their parents to gain control. This power grab facilitates the establishment of their Sith cult, recognized as the Krath. This coup is the starting point of the Krath Holy Crusade. [9]
- A combined Republic and Jedi force intervenes to assist the planet Empress Teta, which had been resisting the Krath. However, the Sith cult successfully expels the Republic from the system during the Battle of Koros Major. During an assault on the Republic command vessel Reliance I, Ulic Qel-Droma is infected by Aleema Keto's Sith magic, unknowingly setting him on a path towards the dark side. [10]
- The Jedi Conclave on Deneba is interrupted by Krath battle droids, leading to an assault on the Jedi by the conclave's own servant droids. Although the Jedi eliminate their robotic attackers, Arca Jeth is killed by Krath droids during the conflict. [11]
- Ulic Qel-Droma makes an attempt to penetrate the Krath organization as an undercover agent, but Aleema Keto successfully corrupts him to the dark side. Qel-Droma assassinates Satal and assumes leadership of the Krath alongside Aleema. A Jedi rescue attempt fails when Qel-Droma declines to be rescued. [12]
- Simultaneously, the power-hungry Jedi Exar Kun embarks on a quest for Sith knowledge, encountering the spirit of Freedon Nadd on Onderon's moon, Dxun. There, he receives training in the dark side before proceeding to Yavin 4 in pursuit of greater power. Ultimately, Kun destroys Nadd's spirit and seeks out Ulic Qel-Droma to eliminate a potential threat. [13]
- Nomi Sunrider organizes a second rescue operation concurrently with Kun's arrival on Empress Teta, resulting in a confrontation between Kun and Qel-Droma. However, the duel is brought to an end by the spirit of Marka Ragnos, who bestows upon Kun and Qel-Droma the titles of Dark Lords of the Sith, as well as Master and apprentice. Allying with Kun, Qel-Droma rejects Sunrider's rescue attempt, and the two Sith establish the Brotherhood of the Sith. [14]
