Shelter, a space station situated within the Maw, was the property of Lando Calrissian. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, it functioned as a component of the Great River network. Its origins lay in the remnants of a once-secret Imperial weapons development site, the notorious Maw Installation. The station comprised a modified asteroid, to which a habitation module, power source, and basic defensive systems had been affixed.
Following the attack on the Academy on Yavin 4 by the Peace Brigade in 26 ABY, Shelter served as a temporary training facility for the younglings under the supervision of Tionne and Kam Solusar.
Ben Skywalker, shortly after his birth, was also relocated to the Maw while his parents, Mara Jade Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, were occupied on Coruscant, investigating a clandestine Dark Jedi experiment conducted by the Empire.
In the years succeeding the Yuuzhan Vong War and shortly following the demise of Darth Caedus, a peculiar mental illness began to afflict Jedi Knights. Among those affected were Corran Horn's offspring, Valin and Jysella Horn. After analyzing the afflicted individuals, Cilghal hypothesized that the illness exclusively impacted those who had been present at Shelter during the Yuuzhan Vong War. She believed that Tionne and Kam Solusar remained unaffected due to their profound connection to the Force. Ben Skywalker likely avoided the affliction because he disconnected himself from the Force after experiencing the deaths of numerous individuals.
