Each academy was under the supervision of the Council of First Knowledge and was managed by an advisory Council that was appointed by their superiors based on Coruscant. While most teachings mirrored those at the Temple, some practices were allowed to differ depending on the location. Nevertheless, at all approved academies, Jedi Masters would guide Initiates into the Order, teaching them the ways of the Force. The size of these schools varied; some were as small as a single clan of younglings, while others were as large as the main academy located within the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Numerous academies were established during the Old Sith Wars and could be found in the Galactic Rim. Some academies were deliberately placed on or close to Force nexuses or locations of importance to the Order, such as crystal caves or nexuses of dark-side energies that required constant observation.
In addition to the conventional academies created by the Order, the Exploration Corps operated several mobile, spacefaring academies, like the Chu'unthor, to facilitate both galactic exploration and the teaching of established doctrines.
By the time the Galactic Republic fell in 19 BBY, many of the ancient academies had been closed for decades, as the Council of First Knowledge favored the central teachings of the Coruscant Temple. Following the Order's disbandment during the Great Jedi Purge, all recognized Temples and academies were raided and destroyed to prevent further Jedi from learning the Force. However, the Galactic Empire's control over Force-related education did not last forever, and the Order was reformed after the Galactic Civil War. When Grand Master Luke Skywalker started to expand his Order from a small group to the size of the original Order, he reopened several old academies and established new facilities to foster growth.
Approximately 200 years prior to the Battle of Yavin, during a peaceful period, the Jedi Temple academy featured comprehensive training facilities. These included extensive dormitories for students, a dining hall, and numerous training rooms for activities such as physical education and simulated lightsaber dueling. Students received instruction in a variety of subjects from Jedi Masters such as Yoda and Mr. Garfield. Visits from family members were occasionally allowed, and students were granted spring and summer vacations.
