New Republic Intelligence Service

The New Republic Intelligence (NRI), also known as the New Republic Intelligence Service, functioned as the primary intelligence-gathering organization for the New Republic. Its core function was to gather and scrutinize data pertaining to foreign governments, corporations, organizations, and individuals, subsequently relaying this analyzed information to various departments within the New Republic government.

Organization and role

The primary mission entrusted to the New Republic Intelligence Service encompassed the identification, investigation, and analysis of potential threats jeopardizing the security of the New Republic. As an integral aspect of its responsibilities, NRI was tasked with compiling comprehensive profiles on a diverse array of individuals, along with maintaining an awareness of prevailing skills or technologies. To achieve this, they frequently amassed holovids, sensor readings, personal histories, corporate records, and any other accessible data extracted from captured databases. From this compiled information, they assessed the magnitude of the threat posed to the New Republic. The Intelligence Service further leveraged reports originating from clandestine agents, researchers, documented incidents, and service personnel to augment its understanding of targeted entities. However, the reliability of this information was occasionally compromised due to the unverifiable nature of certain sources, including smugglers, mercenaries, and independent traders.

A common practice employed by the New Republic Intelligence Service involved disseminating disinformation to enemy spies as a form of counterintelligence. Furthermore, they actively deployed starships to gather additional data and relied on intelligence units like Wraith Squadron. Their fleet consisted of both fast and stealthy vessels, with operatives utilizing Incom's T-65BR X-wing reconnaissance starfighter, as well as Republic Engineering Corporation's Ferret-class reconnaissance vessel and Prowler-class reconnaissance vessel.

The data collected by Intelligence was subsequently disseminated to various divisions within the New Republic. As a component of the military structure, NRI agents typically donned dark green uniforms when not engaged in field operations and held standard military ranks. It operated in conjunction with Fleet Intelligence, whose members wore the uniform of the New Republic Defense Force. NRI seemingly functioned as a military or paramilitary entity, bestowing military ranks upon its officers and overseeing operational units like Black Force Squadron. It also reported to the Council on Security and Intelligence.

The organizational head held the title of Director, with the position of Deputy Director of Operations for New Republic Intelligence representing another senior role. The composition of Intelligence encompassed doctors, soldiers, field operatives, scientists, tacticians, theoreticians, and even a small contingent of Noghri, although the specific functions of the latter group remained somewhat unclear. NRI Officers were primarily recruited from the New Republic Defense Force and comprised soldiers possessing desirable skill sets. These recruits underwent rigorous training to cultivate espionage capabilities, after which they were deployed into active service. Only the most seasoned operatives were entrusted with deep-cover assignments, with the most skilled remaining undercover for extended durations. Consequently, the majority of officers focused on gathering information and transmitting it to headquarters, where it was analyzed by specialists. Furthermore, the agency maintained a network of safehouses spanning as many as two hundred worlds. The widespread distribution of these safehouses ensured that some were situated within the Core while others were located in the Rim. This strategic placement enabled NRI to dispatch agents to any location and on any mission within a thirty-six-hour timeframe.

Jokes centered around Bothans and gornts were a common feature at NRI; Iella Wessiri Antilles estimated that she had encountered thousands of variations of such jokes during her tenure there.

History

It succeeded Alliance Intelligence and the Senate Planetary Intelligence Network. The agency operated under the authority of the General Ministry. The intelligence service headquarters was based on Coruscant, specifically within the area known as The Abyss, with additional bases located on Corellia and Wayland. Intelligence Operations Command may have served as its central command, with the Ongoing Investigation Division functioning as a subordinate branch. Following the Battle of Endor and the subsequent establishment of the New Republic, the nascent government instituted its own intelligence division, known as New Republic Intelligence. Initially, this new military division was led by General Airen Cracken, a former resistance fighter within the Rebel Alliance who had previously held the rank of general during that era. Upon the organization's formation, he was appointed Supreme Commander for Intelligence. New Republic Intelligence constituted one of the two primary intelligence services within the New Republic, alongside the distinct yet related New Republic Fleet Intelligence.

In the immediate aftermath of the New Republic's formation, the raiders affiliated with the enigmatic Imperial warlord known as Lord Shadowspawn targeted numerous worlds. To mitigate this threat, New Republic Intelligence strategically leaked information concerning a passenger vessel named the Corellian Queen, which subsequently attracted agents of Lord Shadowspawn. As the enemy TIE Defenders approached, the trap was sprung, resulting in the decimation of the enemy fighters. However, certain enemy ships were intentionally allowed to escape after a transponder was covertly attached to them during the engagement. Their subsequent retreat to the planet Mindor enabled the Rapid Response Task Force to track them back to their base, ultimately culminating in the Battle of Mindor. During Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaign against the New Republic, the intelligence division remained unable to ascertain any details regarding his origins, even five years after the Battle of Endor. Furthermore, NRI failed to uncover the identities of the ship captains within the Chiss's fleet.

At some point following its inception, NRI's Ongoing Investigation Division became involved in studying the history and potential threat posed by the planet Carida. Following the actions of Kyle Katarn and the threat posed by Jerec, Luke Skywalker recognized the dangers posed by the ancient Sith Empire world of Dromund Kaas. To safeguard his nascent New Jedi Order, Skywalker, in collaboration with New Republic Intelligence, ensured that all knowledge of that ancient Sith world was suppressed, effectively restoring it to its former status as a mere myth, as it had been for millennia.

NRI functioned as a central repository for intelligence reports originating from across the galaxy. Its threat assessments informed and influenced countless military operations. While the Defense Force maintained its own military intelligence unit in the form of Fleet Intelligence, NRI engaged in regular interactions with military units. In certain instances, NRI officers were placed in command of Defense Fleet task forces, as exemplified by the Teljkon Vagabond task force. However, NRI personnel were distinguished by their dark green uniforms, contrasting with the attire of Defense Fleet personnel. During the Black Fleet Crisis, the Intelligence Service assumed responsibility for concealing the news of General Han Solo's capture by the Yevetha from the general public.

In 18 ABY, prior to the outbreak of the First Corellian Insurrection, the intelligence service detected a disturbance within the Corellian sector, leading them to suspect a potential threat emerging to the Republic from that region of space. Initially, several agents were dispatched to the sector, but all mysteriously vanished. Consequently, intelligence agent Belindi Kalenda met with retired general Han Solo before he and his family embarked on a mission to Corellia, seeking their assistance in gathering information to uncover the developing threat. In 25 ABY, the Book of Sith was discovered by Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. He concurred with Wedge Antilles and Iella Wessiri Antilles to entrust the text to NRI for review.

During the tumultuous period of the Yuuzhan Vong War, NRI played a significant role in gathering intelligence on the extragalactic alien invaders known as the Yuuzhan Vong. During this time, the agency sought to assist the New Jedi Order, but anti-Jedi sentiment among the New Republic's leadership hindered this effort through official channels. As part of their duties, they investigated activities conducted by the Yuuzhan Vong and the collaborator group known as the Peace Brigade. New Republic Intelligence observed that, in the early stages of the war, the Yuuzhan Vong possessed thousands of capital ships that traveled in flotillas of up to seventy-five vessels. Their ranks included warships resembling Super Star Destroyers, equipped with firepower equivalent to the heaviest turbolasers and ion cannons.

Intelligence also played a crucial role in interrogating the seemingly defecting Priest caste Yuuzhan Vong known as Elan and her familiar, Vergere. A thorough examination was conducted to determine if they were infiltrators posing as defectors. However, they ultimately cooperated and assisted in orchestrating a mission to facilitate a meeting with the New Jedi Order. This, however, proved to be a meticulously crafted plan involving an assassination attempt on members of the Jedi Council. This incident sparked significant controversy and criticism directed at New Republic Intelligence for their failure to discern the true nature of the two spies. Following the Battle of Tynna, NRI personnel were involved in a covert operation to examine the activities of the extragalactic invaders on the world of Tynna. As the conflict escalated into a war for survival, New Republic Intelligence collaborated with Chiss biotechnicians in the development of a lethal biotoxin known as the Alpha Red project.

The New Republic Intelligence Service was ultimately succeeded by the Galactic Alliance Intelligence Service.
