Centerpoint Station

Centerpoint Station, known by the Killiks as Qolaraloq or the World Puller, and by the Executive Secretariat as C-point, was an extremely old space station with the capability to relocate entire planets using its powerful tractor beams. Constructed by the Thuruht hive around 100,000 BBY, it stands as potentially one of the most ancient objects known to the Jedi during the Yuuzhan Vong War period.

Description

Centerpoint Station schematics

Spanning 100 kilometers in width and 350 kilometers in length, the station exceeded the size of the first Death Star. From afar, it resembled a massive, partially transparent sphere, featuring two small cylindrical poles oriented towards Talus and Tralus. The precise center housed a 60-kilometer-wide hollow area, containing the station's tractor beam projector and its energy source: a substantial ball of energy suspended in midair, referred to as the Glowpoint. The station's rotation simulated gravity, as it predated the invention of artificial gravity technology.

Extending outward from the tractor beam projector chamber were 20 kilometers of decks, totaling approximately 2000. Decks surpassing 20 meters in ceiling height were termed shells. The station's exterior was adorned with box-shaped structures, alongside cables, tubes, pipes, parabolic antennae, and conical forms. Interspersed among these were airlocks, including one at the base of the north cylinder large enough to accommodate several Bakura-class destroyers. A turbolift journey from this hangar to the central area lasted only five minutes, owing to the rapid acceleration of the cars.

Contained within Centerpoint Station's immense structure was a highly complex network of ultra-high energy systems. These systems were capable of generating vast quantities of nuclear, magnetic, electric, tractor beam, and hyperspace power. This power was used in a special type of "hyperspace tractor beam", which could be projected through a hyperspace conduit to any target. It had the capacity to 'grip' objects as large as planets, stars, and even black holes, allowing it to move the targeted object to any location within its operational range. The station could also utilize this power to destroy stars and planets, collapsing their cores through intense gravitational forces. The powerful hyperspace tractor beam arrays were comprised of enormous cone-like structures situated within the station's central chamber, encircled by six smaller cones. During operation, this geometric array acted as the power source for the beam, drawing its energy from the Glowpoint.

History

Origins and construction

Centerpoint Station under construction

Around 100,000 BBY, Centerpoint Station's construction was undertaken by the Thuruht Killik hive, acting under the orders of the two Celestials known as the Son and the Daughter, whom the Killiks referred to as the Architects. By integrating into the hive mind, the siblings empowered the Killiks with the Force strength necessary for the station's construction. The Killiks utilized the Force to extract and refine ore from asteroids, and to navigate through space without conventional propulsion. The Son and the Daughter became Joiners to oversee the construction and grant the Killiks the Force abilities required for the task. Upon completion, the Ones departed from the hivemind, reclaiming their Force power.

The Celestials then employed the station to create entire star systems, including the Corellian system, with the aid of Planetary repulsors embedded deep within the planets' surfaces. It also played a role in constructing a black hole cluster called the Maw, designed to contain their "Mother," the entity known as Abeloth—whom the Killiks would later call the Bringer of Chaos. Subsequently, the station remained positioned at a Lagrangian point between the twin worlds of Talus and Tralus within the Corellian system.

Colonization

Following the disappearance of the Celestials and the subsequent fall of the Infinite Empire in 25,200 BBY, revolting slaves in the Corellian system began to colonize Centerpoint Station. Unaware of its true nature, some settlers sought refuge in the tractor beam projector chamber, naming it Hollowtown and utilizing the environment created by the Glowpoint to cultivate ample food for the station. Two sets of cones, each consisting of a large cone surrounded by six smaller cones that had been part of the tractor beam mechanism, became known as the North and South Conical Mountains, and were frequently attempted to be climbed.

For many generations, Centerpoint Station's tractor beam remained inactive, and the station's inhabitants lived comfortably. Occasionally, the residents expanded on the exterior, such as when a spaceship crashed into the station and became integrated as someone's living space. They never fully grasped the station's nature or its original builders, simply accepting it as it was and adapting to it. The most brilliant minds in the galaxy studied, mapped, and contemplated the workings of the mechanical leviathan for extended periods, yet significant gaps remained in understanding its core processes by the time of the Post-Imperial era. However, it was correctly surmised that the station played a role in the Corellian system's formation and possessed the potential to be used as a weapon capable of destroying entire planets. At one juncture, the station's rotation was examined to determine if it could be halted and artificial gravity installed, but the undertaking was deemed too complex and expensive, compounded by uncertainty about the station's reaction to a cessation of its spin.

In 500 BBY, Talus and Tralus established the Federation of the Double Worlds, an autonomous government separate from the central authority on Corellia. This government assumed control of Centerpoint Station, which was then governed directly by a group known as the Executive Secretariat, headed by the Chief Executive. In the later years of the Galactic Republic and during the rule of its successor state, the Galactic Empire, the entire Corellian Sector came under the control of the Corellian-based central government, led by a Diktat, and later a Governor-General following the rise of the New Republic. Despite this, the Executive Secretariat continued to administer Centerpoint.

The First Galactic Civil War

Following the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY, the librarian at the Theed library on Naboo posed several questions to a spacer, with Centerpoint Station being one of the subjects. Around the same time, the Galactic Empire commandeered a Rebel blockade runner, loaded it with explosives, and programmed it to collide with Centerpoint Station. Their intention was to portray the Rebel Alliance as both reckless and dangerous, thereby pressuring Rebel sympathizers. However, Rebel spies uncovered the plot, and Master Sergeant Crowley supervised a team of Rebel agents who successfully destroyed the corvette before it could reach its target.

The Corellian Crisis

In 18 ABY, the Sacorrian Triad, the governing body of Sacorria in the Corellian sector, sought to secede the entire sector from the New Republic and establish an independent state. Their scientists investigated Centerpoint Station and deciphered how to control and weaponize the tractor beam. Opting to use the station as leverage for their independence, they tested the weapon on the star TD-10036-EM-1271, causing it to explode. During the tractor beam's use, the Glowpoint's temperature surged by several thousand degrees, incinerating Hollowtown and killing everyone within the tractor beam projector chamber. Convinced it was a terrorist act, the civilian population and the Executive Secretariat evacuated, leaving only Chief Operations Officer Jenica Sonsen behind.

When the Triad initiated their insurrection, they employed the tractor beam again to destroy Thanta Zilbra and nearly Bovo Yagen, but the station was diverted, causing the tractor beam to miss when Anakin Solo fired Drall's planetary repulsor at it. Furthermore, Centerpoint Station generated a massive interdiction field and communications jamming that enveloped the entire sector. Eventually, the Triad was defeated, leading to the deactivation of both the interdiction field and communications jamming.

Yuuzhan Vong War

During the Yuuzhan Vong War a few years later, Anakin Solo refused to utilize Centerpoint Station to annihilate an entire Yuuzhan Vong fleet during the Battle of Fondor, so Thrackan Sal-Solo took it upon himself to do so. However, his aim was inaccurate, resulting in the destruction of half of the Yuuzhan Vong fleet and nearly three-quarters of the allied Hapan fleet.

The Second Galactic Civil War

In 40 ABY, Centerpoint Station was once more employed as a weapon, this time by the Corellian people who armed themselves within its colossal confines. However, their path was fraught with difficulty, as the station was controlled by a droid programmed by Thrackan Sal-Solo to believe it was Anakin Solo. Ben Skywalker managed to disable the station by revealing the truth of its existence to the droid, who then identified as "Anakin Sal-Solo." It sustained damage from Galactic Alliance forces at the conclusion of the Blockade of Corellia, raising hopes that this weapon would never again be used to eradicate neighboring worlds.

Despite the yearning for peace, images of Centerpoint Station were featured on clothing worn by Corellians to demonstrate their commitment to their homeworld's cause.

Centerpoint was quickly restored to operational status after the Galactic Alliance damaged it. The weapon was discharged under the direction of Five World Prime Minister Sadras Koyan to eliminate Jacen Solo and the Galactic Alliance Second Fleet. Solo survived the attack, but the Second Fleet was not so fortunate. He later returned to Centerpoint at the head of a task force to seize the station for use against the Confederation.

Recognizing that the balance of power would significantly favor anyone possessing its immense destructive capability, Grand Master Luke Skywalker and the New Jedi Order launched a raid on the station to finally destroy it. Jedi Master Kyp Durron led the raid, accompanied by Toval Seyah, a Galactic Alliance scientist and former spy who had previously worked on the station.

During the intense battle between Confederation and Galactic Alliance forces, a technician named Rikel, who had lost his wife on the galactic capital of Coruscant to the Galactic Alliance Guard, was left in charge of the station's fire-control chamber. Determined to destroy Coruscant, he set the targeting coordinates to [0, 0, 0]. Unbeknownst to Rikel, Toval Seyah had reprogrammed the station to replace all galactic coordinates (starting with Coruscant) with its own; when fired, Centerpoint targeted itself. The resulting gravitic pulse detonated the station, obliterating all traces of the enigmatic structure from the system, killing everyone on board, and destroying countless vessels within its blast radius.

Later history

In 44 ABY, the Jedi Raynar Thul, Lowbacca, and Tekli met with the Thuruht Killik hive. Thuruht permitted them to view the hive's Histories, which detailed their construction of Centerpoint—which they called "Qolaraloq"—under the direction of the Celestials. This revelation refuted the prior speculation by various species that the Killiks had simply assimilated one of Centerpoint's designers into their collective mind, incorporating the memory of Centerpoint's creation into the hive-minded species' consciousness.

As a consequence of Centerpoint's destruction, Sinkhole Station, a space station within the Maw Cluster that shared an identical design with Centerpoint Station but was slightly smaller, began to malfunction. The station had been instrumental in maintaining the black hole cluster and containing Abeloth, but its malfunction caused the shell of black holes comprising the Maw to begin to separate, creating a "crack" in the otherwise complete shell. This allowed Abeloth to extend her influence from the Maw, which had previously blocked it (as Abeloth was only able to influence those inside the Maw, like the Jedi younglings at Shelter). According to Thuruht, Centerpoint's destruction was a direct result of Jacen Solo's attempt to alter his vision at the Pool of Knowledge. By attempting to change the future, Jacen apparently disrupted the Current of the Force and unleashed Abeloth—the Celestial embodiment of Chaos.
