Confederation

The Confederation, alternatively referred to as the Corellian Confederation, represented a galaxy-wide alliance established by Thrackan Sal-Solo and spearheaded by Corellia. This entity engaged the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances in the Second Galactic Civil War, spanning from 40 ABY to at least 43 ABY. The Confederation presented its cause as a fight for freedom against a supposedly corrupt Galactic Alliance, while the latter branded the Confederation as terrorists. Ultimately, the Confederation faced defeat at the hands of the Galactic Alliance and was compelled to surrender in the conflict's final engagement. Nevertheless, following the demise of Darth Caedus, it participated in peace negotiations initiated by the Jedi Coalition.

In the aftermath of the war, the Confederation maintained its status as an autonomous government, solidifying its position as one of the galaxy's three dominant powers, alongside the Galactic Alliance and the Imperial Remnant.

History

Earlier during the conflict, the Five Worlds declared their independence, forming the Corellian Confederation. However, the nascent government experienced significant expansion when Lumiya strategically guided Commenor and Bothawui to unite with the Corellians, with the goal of expelling the Galactic Alliance blockade fleets from the Corellian system.

Thrackan Sal-Solo, the infamous rebel who founded the Confederation

At the urging of Corellia's new allies, the interstellar coalition's designation was shortened to simply "the Confederation." Subsequently, Fondor, followed by Bespin and Adumar, joined its ranks. This expansion granted the Confederation control over two of the galaxy's premier military shipyards and access to crucial suppliers of blaster gas and proton torpedoes for their newly established Confederation Fleet.

Having secured ownership of several major galactic ship-producing facilities, the Confederation Fleet launched assaults on Galactic Alliance shipyards, including those at Gyndine, to curtail their capacity for offensive operations.

Furthermore, Nal Hutta and Hutt Space aligned themselves with the Confederation. The appointment of former Imperial General Turr Phennir as the Supreme Commander of the combined Confederation military could suggest that sympathizers within the Imperial Remnant also committed to the coalition, in defiance of the pro-Alliance stance of the Moff Council.

Following the events on Gilatter VIII, Dur Gejjen, the Five World Prime Minister, was assassinated by Ben Skywalker under the orders of his cousin Jacen Solo, causing significant damage to the Confederation and its allied factions. Despite Gejjen's death, the Bothans remained determined, offering twenty million credits per month to the Mandalorians for the exclusive services of a Mandalorian fleet accompanied by infantry. They also expressed considerable interest in acquiring a squadron of the novel Bes'uliik-class assault starfighters and were prepared to offer a premium for exclusive purchasing rights.

As Jacen Solo, now the Sith Lord Darth Caedus, assumed control of the Alliance, the galaxy descended into a state of total war. The combined fleets representing Corellia, Bothawui, Hutt Space, and Commenor engaged Core World forces, aiming for a decisive confrontation with the forces of Coruscant. While Balmorra quickly fell to the Confederation, the main assault force was ultimately defeated at Kuat, and the failure to secure the Wookiees' alliance following the Battle of Kashyyyk left them in a precarious position. However, the Alliance, in turn, suffered a major setback when the New Jedi Order, unwilling to continue supporting Caedus, withdrew at Kuat and established the Jedi Coalition.

In the ensuing weeks, the Confederation's strength diminished due to a series of defeats. The forces of Commenor and Bothawui were significantly weakened by Alliance attacks, Centerpoint Station was destroyed by the Jedi and their allies, and eventually Fondor fell as well, during which Caedus secured the support of the Imperial Remnant. The momentum had shifted against the Confederation.

The Confederation's final stand occurred during its participation in the Second Battle of Roche, alongside the Jedi Coalition and the Alliance-in-exile. However, their fleets were trapped within the Roche system by Admiral Nek Bwua'tu and suffered heavy losses. Darth Caedus, now consumed by his obsession with defeating the Jedi, delegated matters at Roche to Bwua'tu while leading a joint-Alliance/Imperial force to Shedu Maad, only to meet his demise in the subsequent battle. With Caedus's death, the forces under his command aligned themselves with the Coalition. The combined power of the Jedi, the Alliance, and the Remnant compelled the Confederation to surrender, bringing the war to an end. Despite this, the Confederation refused to rejoin the Alliance, but did participate in the Unification Summit on Coruscant in 43 ABY. The Confederation's fate after this point remains unknown, but it is evident that it had fully reintegrated with the Alliance at some juncture before the Sith–Imperial War.

Confederation military

The disparate fleets underwent reorganization to form the unified Confederation Fleet. The position of Supreme Commander of the Confederation Fleet was held by former Imperial General Turr Phennir.

The fleet possessed several formidable warships, including the newly constructed Corellian Dreadnaught, the Corellian Strident-class Star Defender, the adaptable Bothan Assault Cruiser, the enhanced Hapan Battle Dragon, as well as the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer.

The Confederation Fleet managed to inflict significant casualties on enemy forces, but its resources were severely strained by the war's end. When the Jedi Coalition resolved to reconstruct the Galactic Alliance with the assistance of the Imperial Remnant, following Darth Caedus's death, the Confederation was compelled to surrender and engage in negotiations with the victorious side.

Government and politics

During its existence as the Corellian Confederation, the secessionist government was overseen by the Five World Prime Minister, although this office briefly transitioned to the President of Five Worlds. As its membership expanded beyond the Corellian sector, the Confederation lacked a singular Head of State, as its leadership comprised political figures and military leaders from individual planets, organizations, and factions. However, the Prime Minister of the Five Worlds retained considerable influence and frequently spoke on behalf of the Confederation. Consequently, its policies were inconsistent, with some members disagreeing on warfare tactics and holding differing perspectives on achieving victory in the Second Galactic Civil War. Nevertheless, the Confederation was characterized by close economic and military collaboration. To enhance coordination of military strategy and provide a unified command structure for its numerous fleets, the position of Supreme Commander of the Confederation Fleet was established. Subsequently, the Supreme Commander effectively assumed the powers of head of state and represented the Confederation at the Unification Summit after the war.

The Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, supported by the Imperial Remnant, stood as a staunch adversary of the Confederation. It also opposed the Hapes Consortium while Queen Mother Tenel Ka Djo remained loyal to the GA government based on Coruscant. However, Confederation leaders later reached a neutrality agreement with the Consortium. The Jedi Coalition acted as its co-belligerent, with both factions primarily engaging the GA independently, although they shared intelligence on their common enemy's maneuvers and targets. When the Galactic Alliance fractured into two factions, Fondor, one of the Confederation's founding members, offered safe haven to forces loyal to Cha Niathal and permitted them to establish a government-in-exile on the planet, viewing Jacen Solo, the current GA Chief of State, as the greatest threat to all. The Confederation successfully secured powerful allies such as the Heritage Council and Hutts, while also establishing trade relations with the weapons-producing Mandalorians. It also explored various strategies to augment its forces, including planning a political coup on Hapes and offering assistance to endangered planets such as Kashyyyk.

The primary objective of the separatist government was to liberate itself from the oppressive control of the highly centralized and restrictive Galactic Alliance, particularly as embodied by Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus, a colonel in the oppressive secret police Galactic Alliance Guard and later Galactic Alliance Chief of State. While some Confederation members envisioned a future of complete independence from the GA, others united under its banner, seeking opportunities to dominate the galaxy through fear and force, compelling potential enemies into submission, for instance, by threatening the use of superweapons like Centerpoint Station.
