Traest Kre'fey

A male Bothan admiral named Traest Kre'fey served the New Republic and the Galactic Alliance, leading their forces in numerous battles throughout both the Yuuzhan Vong War and the Second Galactic Civil War.

Biography

Early life

Traest Kre'fey's grandfather was Laryn Kre'fey. Due to his grandfather's failure at Borleias, the Kre'fey's family saw its power diminished. Consequently, Kre'fey was sent to a minor training facility orbiting the Bothan Martial Academy. There, he studied under an unconventional Bothan instructor and formed distinct perspectives on Bothan society. He specifically believed that Bothan society was flawed and needed to evolve to better integrate into the galaxy. The mass resignations within the Bothan military during the Caamas Document Crisis resulted in Kre'fey's swift promotion to the rank of admiral.

Although he was a cousin of Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya, he held differing views on the Yuuzhan Vong threat, leading to a contentious relationship, which was typical for Bothans. Recognizing the danger early on, before the Battle of Ithor, he threatened to either move the military into the Unknown Regions or install Leia Organa Solo as leader through a military takeover if Fey'lya didn't take action. Unlike other admirals, Kre'fey actively sought assistance from the Jedi. When Kyp Durron requested assistance in destroying a gravitic superweapon that the Yuuzhan Vong were developing in the wreckage of Sernpidal, he offered his flagship, the Ralroost, to aid in the mission.

Ar'krai

During the Fall of Coruscant, Kre'fey was among the commanders, leading Fleet Group One. His actions during the battle were cautious, leading many of his ships to disobey his orders and join General Garm Bel Iblis. Following the battle, he went back to Bothawui to observe the official mourning period for Borsk Fey'lya, who perished during the attack. While there, the Bothan Council formally announced a state of ar'krai. Kre'fey fully embraced this declaration of total war, which made some of the Jedi under his command suspicious of his motives. However, the High Council determined that the Force meld would prevent his troops from carrying out any "illegal" actions if Kre'fey attempted them. With several Jedi squadrons under his command, Kre'fey aggressively fought the Yuuzhan Vong between the election of Cal Omas and the Battle of Ebaq 9, attacking Yuuzhan Vong settlements and targeting the Peace Brigade on Ylesia. He had two questions inscribed on the Ralroost's bulkhead: "What can I do to hurt the Vong today?" and "How can I help my own side grow stronger?", to constantly remind his crew to focus on countering the Yuuzhan Vong threat.

Operating from his flagship Ralroost, Kre'fey participated in the final battle of the war in the space surrounding Coruscant, and he witnessed the Yuuzhan Vong's formal surrender. In the aftermath of the Yuuzhan Vong's surrender, Kre'fey was appointed Supreme Commander of the Galactic Alliance Defense Force and was celebrated as the "Liberator of Coruscant," becoming a galaxy-wide hero. However, due to the Bothans' refusal to end the state of ar'krai, Kre'fey was compelled to resign shortly afterward.

Second Galactic Civil War

Subsequent to the war, he was celebrated as the liberator of Coruscant, but left his position as commander in chief. Kre'fey went back to Bothawui, and by 40 ABY, as conflict began between Corellia and the Alliance, the Bothans became involved. Soon, Jacen Solo, now leading the Galactic Alliance Guard, began arresting, detaining, and executing Bothans on Coruscant because they supported Corellia and the actions of the True Victory Party. When Bothawui joined Corellia militarily, Kre'fey returned to service as an admiral, commanding a portion of the Bothan fleet at the Battle of Kashyyyk under Admiral Babo's command. During the battle, the Bothan forces engaged the Galactic Alliance Fifth Fleet.

Behind the scenes

After his appearance in 2003's The New Jedi Order: The Unifying Force, the concluding novel of The New Jedi Order series, Kre'fey did not reappear in any subsequent novels until Legacy of the Force: Inferno, the sixth book in the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force series, was published. In the novel's epilogue, an admiral named Kre'fey is mentioned as having participated in the Battle of Kashyyyk. While the character was not explicitly identified as Traest Kre'fey, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, released in 2008, confirmed that they were the same person.
