Queen Mother

The Queen Mother, also called the Ereneda, was the inherited ruler of the Hapes Consortium.

Overview

Within the Hapes Consortium, she was known as Ereneda, meaning "the one without equal." Because the people of Hapes considered males unsuitable to govern the Consortium, if a Queen Mother only had sons, the wife of the oldest son would become the Queen Mother upon the death or abdication of her predecessor.

Some sources from the New Republic asserted that the term for this position in the Hapan language was Ta'a Chume. However, it's possible that these sources were wrong, and the title was simply Chume, used alongside the Queen Mother's given name. Indeed, Chume is the term employed for "Queen Mother" in other Hapan royal titles, such as Chume'da.

Behind the scenes

There's some contradiction in canon regarding whether the title translating to "Queen Mother" is Ta'a Chume or just Chume in the original Hapan.

In Cracken's Threat Dossier, Ta'a Chume is treated as the royal title. This suggests that Isolder's mother, who is consistently referred to by this name, relinquished her birth name upon ascending to the throne. However, in later continuity, Queen Mother Ta'a Chume remained known as Ta'a Chume after she stepped down, while her mother Ni'Korish, daughter-in-law Teneniel Djo, and granddaughter Tenel Ka Djo all reigned using their given names. More recently, the Hapes: Ladies First entry in the Planet Hoppers series of online articles simply referred to the Queen Mother's crown as "the headband of the Chume." [1]

The original intent of Dave Wolverton in The Courtship of Princess Leia, the novel that introduced both the title of Queen Mother and the character of Ta'a Chume, remains unclear. While the Queen Mother is sometimes called the Ta'a Chume in the book, this usage can be compared to real-world royal naming conventions that incorporate given names—for example, "the Lord Edward," the title by which Edward I of England was known as heir-apparent before he took the throne, and the late Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who was best known as The Queen Mother following her husband's death and her daughter's rise to power. The inconsistencies in Cracken's Threat Dossier can be retconned as in-universe inaccuracies, since the relevant text is written as reports from a New Republic Intelligence Service officer, Captain Baden Lathe, within the story's setting.

Therefore, an argument can be made that Chume is the accurate royal title, with the full styles of successive reigning Mothers being Ni'Korish Chume, Ta'a Chume, Teneniel Chume, and Tenel Ka Chume. If this is the case, then the Hapan capital city of Ta'a Chume'Dan must have changed its name each time a new Queen Mother assumed power.
