Diktat

Daclif Gallamby Daclif Gallamby, the final individual to hold the title of Diktat of Corellia

Following the end of the Corellian empire, the position of Diktat was created to designate the head of state for Corellia. For many centuries, this title remained in use, but it ultimately vanished when the last Diktat, Daclif Gallamby, met his end towards the close of the Galactic Civil War.

Details

The elected executive of the republic of Corellia was known as the Diktat. This person had the responsibility of directly running the planet. Furthermore, the Diktat functioned as the Governor-General of the Corellian sector, and therefore, also acted as both the commander-in-chief of the Corellian Defense Force and the director of the Corellian Security Force.

The Coronet Capitol, the siege of the Office of the Diktat

Even if the Diktat was officially the head-of-state of a constitutional monarchy, the system had somehow changed into a corporatocracy guided by the boards of directors from the most influential Corellian corporations. These included Corellian Engineering Corporation, Corellia Mining Corporation, and Gowix Computers. Consequently, the Diktat's actual authority hinged on the corporate entities in charge of the government. Certain Diktats were mere figureheads on Corellia, while others actively governed the entire sector. Regardless, the Diktat's responsibilities involved enhancing Corellia's presence in both interstellar trade and shipbuilding.

Located in the Governmental Sector of Coronet City on Corellia, the Coronet Capitol served as the office for the Diktat and their administration. The Diktat's residence was the grand Corona House, a thousand-year-old building which previously housed Corellia's monarchs.

The Medal for Distinguished Service was an award that could be bestowed by the Corellian Diktat.

Background

In 312 BBY, following the dismantling of the Corellian empire by its final king, Berethron e Solo, the title of Diktat was established alongside the creation of a republic on Corellia. Over the subsequent centuries, several individuals who held this title met their demise under mysterious circumstances.

Shyla Merricope held the position of Diktat during the closing years of the Galactic Republic. Diktat Merricope and Senator Garm Bel Iblis used Contemplanys Hermi during the Separatist Crisis to temporarily remove the Corellian sector from the Galactic Republic, with the intention of preventing the impending Clone Wars from damaging the sector.

When the Declaration of a New Order marked the transition of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire, Dupas Thomree was the Corellian Diktat. Thomree came to an understanding with Emperor Palpatine to preserve his rule and the autonomy of the Corellian sector. Consequently, the sector became an Imperial client state. Dupas Thomree agreed to back Imperial galactic policies, remit taxes to the Empire, and maintain the operations of the Corellian shipyards to produce Imperial warships. While the Corellian sector remained officially independent and the Diktat maintained his government, he was reduced to a puppet ruler who only managed the administration of Corellia itself. Even though the Corellian Diktat retained the title of Governor-General of the Corellian sector, the sector and its Corellian Defense Force were effectively placed under the control of the newly appointed Grand Moff of the Corellian sector. This situation incited strong protests from Corellia's independent-minded population against the Diktat. As time passed, Diktat Dupas Thomree distanced himself from his people and intensified restrictions on freedom. With the complete backing and protection of the Empire, the Diktat transformed into an autocrat, free to act as he pleased without concern for public dissent. Furthermore, the position of Diktat became a lifetime appointment, with each Diktat personally selecting their successor. Meanwhile, agents from the Imperial Security Bureau and COMPNOR infiltrated Corellian society to ensure the Diktat adhered to his agreement with the Emperor and to eliminate any threats to the Diktat's rule.

When the Galactic Civil War broke out between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, Diktat Dupas Thomree consented to provide Corellian military forces to the Empire. Not long after, Dupas Thomree passed away and was succeeded by his designated successor, Daclif Gallamby, a figure largely unknown to the public. The Galactic Civil War intensified during Gallamby's tenure. As Corellian armed forces were repeatedly deployed to support the Empire against the Rebellion, piracy surged within the Corellian sector, leading to a decline in the local economy. Following the Rebel triumph at the Battle of Yavin, the Diktat and his government grew paranoid, fearing potential overthrow by either the Rebellion or their own populace. Eventually, the Corellian government implemented stringent isolationist measures, restricting trade and traffic throughout the sector, which triggered the collapse of the Corellian economy. At some point during the Empire's reign, an Aro-GX Security Droid reprogrammed by Corellian criminals nearly assassinated the Diktat. In 1 ABY, a criminal group known as the Rogue CorSec attempted to depose Diktat Daclif Gallamby, but their scheme was thwarted by the Corellian Security Force.

After the Emperor's demise at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, the Galactic Empire began to disintegrate. Initially, Diktat Gallamby's position was reinforced by the massive influx of Imperial officers and troops seeking refuge in the Corellian sector. However, without the direct protection of the Emperor, the Diktat's government faltered. The disgruntled Corellian population protested with increasing vehemence, and the Diktat gradually ceded power to the Sacorrian Triad. In 7 ABY, the Diktat disbanded the esteemed Corellian Security Force, diverting the majority of its resources to the newly formed Public Safety Service, an Imperialistic security force and political police tasked with safeguarding the regime. Nevertheless, by 13 ABY, the Diktat's regime crumbled. As the population revolted, the Corellian armed forces and security forces ultimately ceased protecting the government. Daclif Gallamby and his allies swiftly seized half of the state treasury's credits and fled the Corellian system. Due to the Diktat's sudden departure, his presumed successor, Thrackan Sal-Solo, was unable to prevent the regime's collapse. The Corellian administration remained in disarray until the New Republic assumed control of the Corellian sector and appointed a Governor-General to govern Corellia and the sector.

Thrackan Sal-Solo, self-proclaimed Diktat of Corellia

During the Corellian Crisis in 18 ABY, the Corellian separatists of the Human League assassinated Governor-General Micamberlecto and took control of Corellia. Their leader, Thrackan Sal-Solo, declared himself the new Diktat of Corellia, aiming to reinstate the previous regime. However, Sal-Solo's rule was short-lived. He was apprehended by the New Republic at the conclusion of the Corellian Crisis, thereby restoring the New Republic's authority over Corellia.

Following the Corellian Crisis, Thrackan Sal-Solo was imprisoned for several years but was prematurely released by the New Republic in exchange for his assistance in the war against the Yuuzhan Vong. Sal-Solo became a celebrated war hero among the Corellians during the Battle of Fondor. He later re-entered politics and was elected Governor-General of the Corellian sector in 26 ABY. From this position, Thrackan Sal-Solo attempted to betray the New Republic and secure the support of the Yuuzhan Vong in order to declare the Corellian sector's independence and proclaim himself Diktat. Ironically, Sal-Solo was betrayed by the Yuuzhan Vong, who had no interest in the proposal.

After the Corellians established a new political system known as the Five Worlds, preceding the Second Galactic Civil War, the title of Diktat, along with that of Governor-General of the Corellian sector, disappeared permanently.
