Raynar Thul

Raynar Thul was a male Human character in the Expanded Universe. He was an adversary, yet also a comrade to the Solo twins. As the son of Bornan and Aryn Dro Thul, former nobles of Alderaan, he was the designated successor to their shipping business, Bornaryn Trading. Following the events of the Mission to Myrkr during the Yuuzhan Vong War, Raynar was taken in by the insectoid Killiks. Profoundly changed, he became UnuThul, the leader of the Colony. In 35 ABY, under the sway of the sinister Dark Nest, the Colony launched an assault on the Chiss Ascendancy, thereby instigating the Swarm War. One year later, Luke Skywalker triumphed over UnuThul, bringing an end to the Swarm War, and Thul was subsequently taken into the custody of the Galactic Alliance.

Seven years and many surgical procedures later, he rejoined the Jedi Order as a fully active Jedi Knight. He played a role in the defense of the Jedi Temple against Mandalorians serving as mercenaries for Galactic Alliance Chief of State Natasi Daala. Later, Thul went back to the Killiks, prepared to become a Joiner if needed, on a mission to uncover critical intelligence regarding the identity of the dark side entity known as Abeloth. Having accomplished his objective, Raynar permitted himself to be absorbed into the hive mind of the Thuruht nest, becoming ThurThul. However, after the defeat of the Lost Tribe of Sith and Abeloth, a group of Jedi dispatched by Luke Skywalker facilitated his return to his Jedi brethren.

Biographical Information

Early Years

Raynar's birth occurred on the Tradewyn, the flagship vessel of Bornaryn Trading. The destruction of his family's home planet, Alderaan, took place approximately 10 years before his birth. His parents and uncle perpetuated the traditions of their lost homeworld, observing familial customs such as the Ceremony of Waters.

Raynar's personality mirrored that of his uncle, Tyko Thul, exhibiting traits of being spoiled and conceited. He enjoyed the advantages of wealth, yet experienced a lack of parental affection.

Training as a Jedi

It was discovered that Raynar possessed Force-sensitive abilities, leading to his enrollment at Luke Skywalker's Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4 to develop his Force abilities. Raynar's behavior at the academy was often disruptive, frequently irritating his fellow students by interrupting Luke Skywalker's lessons with excessive questioning or asserting his Force superiority. His robes were known for their clashing, vibrant colors, almost gaudy. Skywalker, understandingly, would answer some of the more insightful questions, but Raynar knew that a pointed look from Skywalker meant it was time to be quiet.

Raynar Thul, during the disappearance of his father.

During the attack by the Shadow Academy, Raynar's claims of Force prowess were debunked when he was easily defeated by Dark Jedi. He was only saved from death when Zekk intervened, throwing him into the mud, which, while humiliating, saved his life. Following this experience, he committed to improving his Force abilities to match his boasts. After the battle, Raynar aided in caring for the injured, including his former adversary, Tenel Ka, who had been wounded in a fight with the Nightsister Tamith Kai. This act of kindness led to friendships with Tenel Ka, the Solo twins Jacen and Jaina, and the Wookiee Lowbacca, all of whom he had previously considered enemies.

Shortly after the Shadow Academy's assault, Han Solo informed Raynar of Bornan Thul's disappearance. Despite Raynar's offer to organize a search party, he was instructed to remain at the academy. Weeks passed without news of Bornan, prompting Aryn Dro Thul to recall her son to the Tradewyn for his safety and her peace of mind. After the discovery and elimination of a traitor, Raynar remained on the ship for several more weeks. Missing his new friends Jacen, Jaina, Tenel Ka, and Lowbacca, he hitched a ride back to Yavin 4 with the supplier, old Peckhum.

Learning about the anti-Human Diversity Alliance and its leader, Nolaa Tarkona, from former member Lusa, Raynar understood the circumstances of his father's disappearance en route to meet Tarkona. Bornan Thul had acquired a navicomputer containing coordinates to a plague warehouse, intended for Tarkona. However, upon discovering her intentions, he hid it. Unfortunately, Bornan Thul had visited the warehouse, and Boba Fett (actually Ailyn Vel in disguise) had hacked into his navigation logs, found the coordinates, and given them to Tarkona.

After reuniting with his father, Raynar, along with Zekk and the Jedi trainees, assisted in wiring the warehouse with explosives. The Diversity Alliance arrived, and Bornan Thul was exposed to a Human-killing virus during the confrontation. Raynar was forced to witness his father's death just hours after their reunion.

Following a period of mourning, Raynar returned to Yavin 4 and constructed his lightsaber. He was also pleased to learn that Lusa, with whom he had developed a close bond, had become a full-time student at the Academy.

The Yuuzhan Vong Conflict

Raynar Thul

During the Yuuzhan Vong War, Raynar suffered the loss of his friend Lusa, who was killed by the voxyn on Chiron. He subsequently joined an all-Jedi squadron in an ambush at Froz, adopting the callsign Merchantman. Raynar, along with Alema Rar, believed that any action was justified if it led to the destruction of the voxyn and the defeat of the Yuuzhan Vong. This stance sparked controversy within the group, particularly with Jacen and Zekk, who feared it could lead to the dark side.

Raynar was selected for the Myrkr strike team mission, tasked with eliminating the voxyn queen, primarily to avenge Lusa's death. During the Mission to Myrkr, he formed a close bond with Eryl Besa, which was tragically cut short by her death. He sustained injuries in a fight with a voxyn, managing to kill it, but was knocked unconscious by the neural shock from its tail. He was placed on the Tachyon Flier to recover. The Dark Jedi Welk and Lomi Plo captured him and escaped. The vessel was damaged just before making the jump to hyperspace, and the team felt a surge through the Force, leading them to believe Raynar had died.

Abduction, Rescue, and Assimilation (27 ABY)

In 27 ABY, during the Yuuzhan Vong War's Mission to Myrkr, Jedi Apprentice Raynar Thul was part of the strike team that infiltrated the worldship Baanu Rass in Myrkr's orbit. Their objective was to destroy the voxyn queen located within. After being wounded, Raynar was moved to the YV-888 freighter discovered by the team in the worldship hangar, a vessel they intended to commandeer after completing their mission.

However, Nightsister Lomi Plo and Dark Jedi Welk, two prisoners rescued by the team during the mission, hijacked the Tachyon Flier after stunning Lowbacca. They betrayed the strike team and fled, taking Raynar with them. The Flier came under enemy fire as it left Myrkr, and after a faint disturbance in the Force, the three passengers were presumed dead.

In reality, the Flier jumped to the Unknown Regions and crash-landed on the planet Yoggoy, a Killik nest. Despite his injuries, Raynar heroically pulled Plo and Welk from the wreckage, which had caught fire. The Killiks of the Yoggoy hive arrived at the crash site and waited for Raynar to die, intending to feed his corpse to Killik larvae. As the Joining process began, Raynar's personality started to influence and dominate the Yoggoy hive mind. Consequently, the Yoggoy took Raynar and spent considerable time healing the young Jedi. Raynar Thul survived and was absorbed into the Yoggoy hive mind, emerging as a Joiner of the Yoggoy hive.

UnuThul (27 to 35 ABY)

Raynar's Force sensitivity had a profound effect on the Yoggoy, imbuing them with his values, particularly the importance of individual life. Thul, now reborn, began transforming the Yoggoy nest to better serve the Killiks, significantly enhancing their strength. This led to the creation of a new nest called Unu, with Thul becoming the Prime Unu, UnuThul, leader of the Unu-led hive and spokesperson for the Colony—a position that some would later consider akin to a Jedi Lord. Over time, the Colony expanded throughout local space, both to secure resources for itself and to share Thul's "gift" among the Kind.

This transformation was not without its challenges. While Killiks were generally peaceful, like most hive-based species, they did not value individual life. At least one rival nest attacked the lead hive, but the hive survived, either defeating or absorbing the attacking nest.

Furthermore, recurring food shortages, previously unknown to the Killiks, forced them to begin trading with other planets and races. The Colony also began absorbing more non-Killiks into their hive mind.

One notable example was the Chiss Ascendancy. Before Raynar Thul's crash landing on Yoggoy and subsequent transformation into UnuThul, several Chiss Ruling Families had already employed entire Killik nests for industrial labor. Despite the Chiss' precautions, two entire ruling families became Joiners, and three became heavily reliant on insect labor. An internal dispute arose within the Ascendancy, which was resolved by 28 ABY.

The Dark Nest Crisis (35 to 36 ABY)

Border Dispute Between Chiss and Colony

The Chiss Ascendancy viewed the Colony as a significant threat. Under the leadership of the Unu-led hive and UnuThul, the Colony continued to expand. By 35 ABY, it encompassed at least three hundred and seventy-five nests, with its borders closely approaching Ascendancy space. The Chiss military responded with heightened readiness and alert, leading to several skirmishes. The Colony benefited from the intelligence and knowledge accessible through the "defected" Chiss hive minds. Facing military threats and starvation, UnuThul sought help to gain an advantage over the Chiss, ostensibly to aid the weak and poor… or so he believed.

A Plea for Assistance

UnuThul.

UnuThul's Force sensitivity not only united the nests but also enabled him to draw upon the Force energy of every nest member and Joiner. Now incredibly powerful in the Force, UnuThul issued a call for help through the Force to the survivors of the Myrkr strike team. Every survivor received the call, prompting Jaina Solo, Tesar Sebatyne, Lowbacca, Zekk, Tahiri Veila, Tekli and Alema Rar to abandon their Jedi duties and rush to Yoggoy. After meeting "Raynar" and spending time in the hive, most of the Jedi became Joiners or Partial Joiners with the Taat nest, and they were deployed by UnuThul to the planet Qoribu, assisting the Taat in engaging incoming Chiss ships.

Enraged that Jedi from the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances—in Aristocra Mitt'swe'kleoni's words—were taking aggressive actions in a border dispute involving the Chiss, Mitt'swe'kleoni traveled to Coruscant and demanded an explanation from Chief of State Cal Omas. Omas, genuinely unaware of both the missing Jedi and the border dispute, led the Chiss to the New Jedi Temple. Mitt'swe'kleoni was convinced that the missing Jedi had gone rogue, while Cal Omas demanded that Jedi Master Luke Skywalker personally retrieve the Jedi and stop the violence.

Meanwhile, Jacen Solo, after spending five years in solitude to broaden his understanding of the Force, received the Force call and went to Yoggoy. There, Jacen visited the crash site before meeting UnuThul and used the newly learned Flow-walking technique to witness Raynar dragging Plo and Welk out of the wreckage in the past. He also left a Force vision message for his mother, Leia Organa Solo, who would visit the crash site in the future. At Hapes, Queen Mother Tenel Ka Chume Ta' Djo received the call but remained in the Consortium due to her responsibilities to her people.

Confrontations with the Jedi Masters

After receiving news from Kyp Durron, Leia and Han Solo journeyed to the Unknown Regions in the Millennium Falcon, while Luke, Mara Jade Skywalker, and Saba Sebatyne arrived at the Lizil nest in the Jade Shadow, where they were met by five hundred dartships. The Skywalker-Solo family joined forces and began investigating, but the Joiners under the control of the Lizil hive mind attempted to thwart their efforts. With the assistance of Jae Juun and Tarfang, the Jedi gained a basic understanding of Joiners and traveled to Yoggoy.

The Falcon and Jae's XR808g landed on Yoggoy while the Shadow provided air cover. Escorted by a large number of insect soldiers, UnuThul, now an imposing figure with a melted face, no ears or hair, a bulging nose, and blue eyes, greeted the Solos with a deep, gravelly voice. His brows had fused into a single knobby ridge, and his visible skin was covered in burn scars. Standing a head taller than Han Solo, he wore purple trousers with a scarlet cape over a gold chitin breastplate. Despite his appearance, Leia sensed a familiarity in UnuThul's presence, briefly mistaking him for her lost son Anakin Solo. In a display of his power, UnuThul used the Force to telepathically probe Leia, nearly causing her to collapse. He then healed a Yoggoy guide injured by Tarfang, disabled the turrets of the Falcon, crippled the Solos' BD-8 droid, and stunned Cakhmaim and Meewalh, Leia's Noghri bodyguards. After commenting that the Falcon would look better with a white hull instead of black, Leia identified the Prime Unu as Raynar Thul, presumed lost.

In the Prime Chamber, UnuThul referred to himself as "we," stating that Raynar Thul no longer existed and that "we" were now UnuThul. Luke insisted that he sensed Raynar's presence within UnuThul, suggesting that Raynar might be in hiding. UnuThul claimed that Raynar Thul was now a ghost, vanished with the Crash, and that UnuThul was the man he is now. Raynar then guided the Jedi to read the Chronicle on the wall, explaining the transformation of Raynar Thul into UnuThul and the rise of the Unu nest, which UnuThul described as "the nest of the nests."

UnuThul faced his first test when Mara inquired about the fate of Lomi Plo and Welk. UnuThul appeared confused, not remembering his own abduction by the pair. Luke sensed Raynar's presence repeatedly surfacing but being suppressed by the hive mind. UnuThul claimed that the Crash was remembered, but not the Dark Jedi, and concluded that they must be dead. When Luke attempted to probe UnuThul again, the hive mind forcefully pushed Luke out, declaring that the Crash, the flames, pain, smoke, fear, loneliness, and despair were the only things "we" remembered.

When Han asked about Jaina and the other missing Jedi, UnuThul assured them of their well-being and claimed that the Unu hive mind did not know how Raynar Thul's friends thought of the new UnuThul. UnuThul stated that the Colony needed the missing Jedi to prevent a war with the Chiss, accusing the Chiss of poisoning the Colony's food worlds and claiming innocence in the conflict. UnuThul proposed that the Chiss could come to the Colony and take what they needed, provided that the Colony could do the same in Chiss space.

When Mara demanded the location of the missing Jedi, UnuThul launched a telepathic assault on Luke Skywalker with such force that it required the combined strength of Luke, Mara, Saba, and Leia to stop him.

UnuThul refused to surrender the planet Qoribu after the showdown, stating that anyone could leave whenever they wanted, and decided to assign a Yoggoy guide to escort the Jedi Masters back to Lizil. Luke refused and insisted on performing a private investigation, UnuThul stated they were welcomed to stay on Yoggoy for as long as they wished, but the Colony would not allow the missing Jedi to be visited. UnuThul then debated with the Masters about the political standing of the New Jedi Order and their view of the Force. The interview ended with UnuThul stating that the Colony understood the Jedi Masters all too well, due to the collective memory and experience of the Joiners.

The Jedi soon realized that such a collective mind allowed UnuThul to spy on them almost anytime and anywhere on Yoggoy. They visited the crash site, and Leia received Jacen's message about Qoribu which was in the Gyuel system. Insects dark blue in color then attempted to assassinate the Jedi Masters at the crash site, which the Jedi barely escaped with Nanna killing several blue insects at the process. However, the Yoggoy guide accompanying the Jedi denied ever seeing any blue insects before its death.

UnuThul met the Jedi back at the hangar. When he asked about whether the Jedi was hurt, Han accused UnuThul for the attempted assassination. UnuThul claimed that the hive mind would know if any nest attacked the Jedi, and the mind would realize if any of its members were killed. Han then threatened UnuThul, even mentioning about a date with Raynar Thul's mother a long time ago, which seemed to enrage the Prime Unu. UnuThul insisted the Yoggoy guide was the only dead found in the area, and the blue insects were probably shadows due to thick dust and falling rubble. Luke proposed that it was another party who attempted to assassinate the Jedi, but UnuThul insisted that even if someone else attacked the Jedi, the hive mind would also be aware.

Leia then took UnuThul into the Falcon and showed him the artwork Killik Twilight, which UnuThul claimed showed the Lost Nest Oroboro, and revealing that the Colony was the nest of the supposed extinct Killiks. However Leia used the Killik ruins on Alderaan to prove that the tower falling at the crash site was an attack instead of a natural collapse. Denied, UnuThul provided an apology and tried to explain the Celestials to Han, claiming the Killiks built the Centerpoint Station, which was called Qolaraloq by them.

Discovery of the Dark Nest

While the Jedi Masters were occupied with searching for Qoribu, the missing Jedi engaged Chiss forces in orbit around Qoribu, and Lowbacca ventured outside the ships. When the Masters arrived at Qoribu, the Shadow came under attack by mysterious dartships, which Luke Skywalker countered with illusions. Following an intense discussion, the Masters on-site requested that the Jedi return to Coruscant. The Jedi agreed, provided that Lowbacca would be rescued and a Master would remain on Qoribu to monitor the conflict.

A Killik of the Dark Nest.

However, the Chiss Commander Jagged Fel intervened, disrupting the rescue operation with the intention of ambushing the renegade Jedi. Lowbacca, unwilling to endanger his companions, successfully thwarted the ambush, leading to his capture by Jagged. On Qoribu, Saba Sebatyne sustained severe injuries during a confrontation with Welk, who was believed to be deceased. Aboard the Shadow, Ben Skywalker secretly transported a Killik from the Gorog nest back to their residence, while Jacen, Tahiri, Tesar, and Tekli journeyed back to Alliance territory alongside the Jedi Masters. Jaina and Zekk were taken aback when Alema consented to depart with the Solo couple and the wounded Saba, as they declined to leave.

In the days that followed, Master Healer Cilghal dedicated her efforts to unraveling the mystery surrounding the Joining, while Alema engaged in sabotage of the Falcon, only to be overpowered by Leia in a lightsaber battle and subsequently apprehended by Han. Jacen journeyed to Hapes, where he successfully persuaded Tenel Ka to dispatch a fleet to defend the Colony. Tesar departed to inform Raynar's family about his reappearance. On Ossus, Mara confronted Ben's Gorog "companion" and successfully captured the insect. Following a morally ambiguous experiment, Cilghal reached the conclusion that Alema was Joined with the Dark Nest Gorog due to her deep connection with the dark side. Furthermore, she deduced that the Dark Nest was manipulating the Colony from behind the scenes, deceiving UnuThul, the Joiners, and all the nests.

Simultaneously, Cal Omas demanded that the Jedi recall all the rogue Jedi and the Hapan fleet, threatening to withdraw Alliance funding from the Order. A heated debate ensued within the Masters' Council. Leia proposed relocating the nests from Qoribu to a new system discovered by the Solos, contingent upon granting Borao to the Ithorians. The Jedi initiated an assault against the Dark Nest by orchestrating Alema's escape from Ossus with Gorog, thereby leading the Jedi to Kr.

The Confrontations on Qoribu and Kr

UnuThul repositioned his flagship and the Colony's primary fleet, known as the Great Swarm, to Qoribu in anticipation of the impending conflict. UnuThul initially requested, and subsequently commanded, Jaina and Zekk to evacuate Qoribu. The pair successfully resisted UnuThul's influence and uncovered the Colony's plan to ambush the Chiss and await Hapan reinforcements. Jaina accused UnuThul of manipulating Jacen to secure the reinforcements, while UnuThul revealed that even the combined Force power of the Colony was insufficient to control Jacen. Jaina attempted to persuade UnuThul to seek peace with the Chiss, which would align with Raynar's wishes, but UnuThul countered that Raynar was no longer present. Jaina then feigned submission, and capitalizing on the inattention of both Unu's mind and the Taat's, she reached out and alerted Jagged.

The Battle of Kr commenced as the Skywalker couple infiltrated the Dark Nest, only to be shot down and ambushed. In high orbit, the Battle of Qoribu erupted as neither the Chiss nor the Hapans trusted the Solos' claims, each suspecting the Solos of being a ploy by the opposing faction. A complex battle ensued, involving the Chiss, Hapans, Colony, and Jedi. Amidst the chaos, the Falcon successfully landed on Kr and stormed the Dark Nest to provide support to the Skywalkers.

Enraged by Jaina's warning to Jagged about the ambush, which disrupted the Colony's plan, UnuThul forcefully implanted a command in Jaina and Zekk: to rescue Lowbacca and depart. As the pair launched in their StealthXs, they detected the presence of Jedi Masters in the system, leading them to believe that UnuThul had deliberately concealed the truth from them. Sensing their doubt, UnuThul intensified the force of the rescue-and-leave command upon them.

On Kr, Alema and Dark Nest warriors ambushed the combined forces of the Skywalkers, Solos, Saba Sebatyne, Kyp Durron, Kyle Katarn, Octa Ramis, and YVH 5-S "Bugcruncher" war droids. Due to the Unu hive mind's rage, the distance from the Taat hive members, and UnuThul's preoccupation with coordinating the battle, preventing him from engaging with the Force Meld of the Myrkr strike team survivors, Jaina and Zekk temporarily regained control of their minds. The pair deduced that the Chiss were employing the Bothan fade tactic against the Colony. Fearing that UnuThul's demise would allow Lomi Plo or Welk to usurp the position of Prime Unu, the pair implored UnuThul to engage with the meld. When the Unu hive mind rejected their plea, Leia touched Jaina, transmitting images of the Battle of Kr to her daughter.

The pair finally became convinced of the existence of the dark blue Killiks and their involvement in the numerous attacks on the Jedi. Jaina and Zekk abandoned their rescue mission and redirected their course towards the Colony fleet, but Unu's Will urged them to deviate. Struggling against the Will, the pair instructed their astromech droids, immune to the Killiks' Will, to proceed towards the Colony fleet. UnuThul personally suppressed the Will and engaged in dialogue with the pair, but he remained skeptical of the Bothan fade claim, citing the distinct nature of Chiss tactics compared to those of the rest of the galaxy.

Despite this, as the pair ventured deep into the Chiss fleet to rescue Lowbacca, the Great Swarm remained stationed around Qoribu's south pole, with the Hapans providing support from behind the dartships, effectively neutralizing the Bothan fade. Recognizing the failure of their plan, the Chiss adjusted their tactics and established a three-layer defensive perimeter. Meanwhile, having lost track of the StealthXs, the Chiss dreadnaught holding Lowbacca retreated and executed a jump to Chiss space.

On Kr, the battle intensified as Luke and Mara engaged in duels with Alema, Welk, and the Gorog assassin. The fighting grew darker as the Skywalkers resorted to Force choke and Force lightning against their adversaries. A mysterious attacker siphoned power cells from the Jedi lightsabers and blasters, while simultaneously slowing Luke's movements. Despite suspicions pointing towards Lomi Plo, the Jedi were unable to locate her. The battle concluded with Mara defeating Gorog and Luke killing Welk, but the injured Alema managed to escape.

The Qoribu Ceasefire

UnuThul relocated his flagship, an antiquated Lancer-class frigate, to Kr and intervened to prevent Jae from hijacking the Falcon. His power overwhelmed Jaina and Zekk, who had arrived to rescue the Jedi, and he demanded the surrender of the Killiks' killers.

Within a captive chamber of the Gorog Dark Nest, UnuThul employed the Force to exert pressure on the Solos. Han resisted effortlessly, but Leia's connection to the meld was exposed. Leia then revealed to UnuThul the captive chamber, where Gorog were feeding on Chiss captives and influencing the Colony to construct additional nests on Qoribu.

The Will of the Unu nest clashed with the will of UnuThul, or rather, Raynar Thul. Leia attempted to convince UnuThul that the Dark Nest was utilizing the Force to manipulate Unu and the other nests, mirroring UnuThul's own use of the Force on Tesar, Tekli, and Tahiri, instructing them to report his fate to the Thul family and argue against the Council. UnuThul remained defiant until Saba presented him with Welk's lifeless body.

Raynar Thul's memories and presence finally resurfaced. He recounted that during the Flier crash on Yoggoy, he had encountered Jacen and received his assistance through the Force. UnuThul was able to recall saving Lomi Plo and sensing her fear of Anakin Solo, Luke Skywalker, and the Yuuzhan Vong, along with her desire to remain hidden from everyone.

The Solos persuaded UnuThul regarding Cilghal's theory that Yoggoy had consumed Raynar Thul's inclination to care for individual life, giving rise to Unu, while also swallowing Lomi Plo's and Welk's desires to hide and create Gorog. UnuThul held himself accountable for all the killings, as Raynar Thul had been responsible for saving Lomi Plo and Welk. Han attempted to dissuade him, but UnuThul shifted blame to the Chiss, suggesting that they had brainwashed the Gorog or were cloning Killiks.

Descending into insanity, UnuThul pressured Leia and a Chiss captive, demanding the nonexistent truth of Chiss treachery, and reiterated his refusal to acknowledge saving Plo and Welk. The Solos and Saba instead convinced UnuThul that absorbing too many Chiss into the Colony would lead to the emergence of Dark Nests, as Chiss were formidable fighters with a penchant for secrecy. UnuThul ultimately refused to absorb any more Chiss minds and declared that the Colony would never murder Chiss prisoners.

Finally, Leia convinced UnuThul to relocate the Qoribu nests onto ships within the Hapan fleet and establish a settlement in a subsector on the periphery of Colony territory. Consequently, the Qoribu Truce was signed, with the Chiss Ascendancy providing a border guarantee and a pledge of nonaggression. Jagged released Lowbacca, and UnuThul informed Han that Jaina was no longer welcome within the nests due to her stubbornness, trickery, and singular focus on preventing war.

The Attack of Fizz

One year later, an environmental defense system known as "the Fizz" initiated attacks on the Killiks who had settled on the planet. The planet's defenses, comprised of advanced nanotechnology, systematically dismantled anything that posed a threat to the planet's ecology.

UnuThul was incensed and imprisoned Han and Luke under the influence of the Dark Nest. He ordered the return of all the Killiks to the Chiss Frontier. During their journey, they were ambushed by the Galactic Alliance fleet. Raynar commandeered one of the shuttles and absconded with the majority of the Killiks. This act led many to view Raynar as an enemy, although some continued to regard him as the Jedi he once was.

The Swarm War

In 36 ABY, during the peak of the Swarm War, he and Luke Skywalker engaged in combat, with Thul wielding a golden lightsaber. During their duel, Skywalker was compelled to sever a portion of his arm. Skywalker managed to restore Thul's senses and demanded that he sever ties with the Killiks. Following the defeat of Lomi Plo, Thul, who had been rendered unconscious by Luke and returned to Jedi headquarters, was fitted with a specialized brain hood to prevent him from communicating with the Killiks, which would result in an electric shock. Thul was subsequently placed in the custody of the Jedi Order, where he was scheduled to undergo comprehensive treatment, both physical and mental, to facilitate his reintegration into the Order.

Recovery and return

In 43 ABY, while still undergoing rehabilitation under Jedi supervision within the Asylum Block of the Jedi Temple detention center, Thul had accepted a prosthetic arm and was contemplating cosmetic surgery to restore his former appearance. When Leia Organa Solo and her husband visited the Detention Center to observe the maddened Jedi Seff Hellin and Natua Wan, Thul's cell door was inadvertently left ajar. Having been granted the freedom to leave at his discretion, the healers deemed him ready to depart as soon as he recognized his own healing. Encouraged by the Solos to leave his cell, Raynar consented to relocate to new quarters and began packing his belongings. He subsequently assisted the Solos in transferring the delusional Jedi patients to the spaceport for evacuation, demonstrating remarkable skill in persuading the escaped Bazel Warv to accompany them.

Thul was present at the Jedi Temple when Mandalorian warriors, contracted by Galactic Federation of Free Alliances Chief of State Natasi Daala, raided the temple. He collaborated with Jedi Knights Jaina Solo, Tyria Sarkin Tainer, and apprentice Bandy Geffer to subdue five Mandalorian warriors.

Thul later cultivated a friendship with Chief of Staff Wynn Dorvan, with whom he shared lunch daily on the steps of the Jedi Temple. When the Temple came under siege and Kani Asari was murdered by the Mandalorians, Dorvan saved Thul's life when he went to have lunch on the steps. This incident prompted Dorvan to remove Asari's body from the steps, overriding the Mandalorians' decree that she would remain there as a reminder to the Jedi of the Mandalorian terms.

Later, Thul was among the numerous Jedi pilots preparing to launch with the StealthX wing to rescue Luke and Ben Skywalker from the Sith when Kenth Hamner and Saba Sebatyne dueled in the hangar. Prior to the duel, Hamner attempted to infiltrate the hangar undetected but suspected that Thul may have sensed Hamner's Force presence when the young Jedi turned his head in Hamner's direction and smirked. It was noted by Hamner that Thul was not among the squadron leaders.

Fighting Abeloth

Raynar participated in the StealthX strike against the Sith above Nam Chorios. After Luke Skywalker announced that the Jedi would be severing ties with the Galactic Alliance and departing Coruscant entirely, Thul was among the many Jedi who joined him. He was a member of the team led by Skywalker as they pursued the dark side entity known as Abeloth throughout the galaxy. When the hunt for Abeloth led to the Sith planet of Upekzar, Thul was among the numerous Jedi who escaped the Force-explosion that followed the Sith Tola Annax's death.

Following the incident on Upekzar, Thul was dispatched to a planet in the Reo system within the Maraqoo sector alongside fellow Jedi Knights Lowbacca and Tekli, as well as the protocol droid C-3PO. There, they convened with the Killik queen of the Thuruht nest to inquire about how they had thwarted Abeloth thousands of years prior. When the Thuruht began performing their duties with haste, C-3PO translated for the Jedi Knights that the Thuruht were doing this because, according to the queen, the end of times had arrived. The Jedi remained with the Thuruht for several weeks but were unable to obtain much further information until Thul decided to join the nest in order to acquire all the knowledge the Thuruht possessed about Abeloth. Thuruht revealed their nest's history as they remembered it, which is in fact the story of the Ones. Since the Thuruht had been their servants they'd witnessed how Abeloth had become what she was.

When the Thuruht finished recounting the story, Thul had reverted to being a joiner, and Lowbacca and Tekli departed, leaving Thul behind. Later, after the Jedi defeated Abeloth, Grand Master Skywalker instructed Master Sebatyne to dispatch a team to retrieve Thul, ensuring that his presence among the Killik did not provoke the Chiss.

Behind the scenes

When Raynar was initially introduced in Young Jedi Knights: Heirs of the Force, he was not given a last name and was simply described as a spoiled young man adorned in gaudy robes of various colors. He received his last name in the Diversity Alliance arc of the Young Jedi Knights series, which also expanded upon his backstory and identified him as the son of Bornan Thul and Aryn Dro from A. C. Crispin's The Han Solo Trilogy.

While attending the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, Raynar wielded a lightsaber with a pewter-colored blade. He presumably utilized this weapon for the majority of his time as a Jedi, even during the Yuuzhan Vong war. As UnuThul, he wielded a lightsaber with a gold-colored blade, which was eventually confiscated by Luke Skywalker after a duel, although Luke offered to return the weapon at some point in the future. By 43 ABY Raynar was once again wielding his lightsaber.
