The Bakura-class destroyer served as the primary vessel within the Bakuran Defense Fleet. This fleet was created after the Ssi-ruuk were successfully driven back during the Invasion of Bakura.
The Bakura-class included interdiction cruisers and their design centered around the same powerful reactor that propelled the Imperial II-class Star Destroyers. Furthermore, they possessed the capability to break free from interdiction fields.
By 18 ABY, only three ships of this class were known to exist: Watchkeeper, Defender, and Sentinel. However, more could have been part of the defense fleet. This possibility arose when Admiral Hortel Ossilege stated that he could not leave the Bakuran System undefended during the Corellian Crisis, suggesting a potentially larger contingent of these destroyers. Notably, these three were the only known destroyers to feature experimental hyperwave inertial momentum sustainers.
The New Republic successfully persuaded the Bakuran Senate to dispatch the three destroyers to aid the Republic during the Corellian Crisis. This decision was motivated by the fact that their interdiction capabilities would be crucial against the similarly equipped Sacorrian fleet, especially given that the New Republic Defense Fleet was largely weakened due to the events of the previous year. Following the Battle of Centerpoint Station, only Defender and Sentinel made their return to Bakura.
