Biography
As a Czerka Corporation officer, Dern operated on Kashyyyk, where he engaged in the illegal activity of poaching tach within the dangerous Shadowlands. His motivation was to amass profits equivalent to several years' worth of earnings. His method involved spraying individuals with a tach essence mist, provoking the tach in the vicinity to become aggressive and attack these marked targets. Dern sought the tach glands located near their brains for use in the production of Tarisian ale. However, Jolee Bindo intervened in Dern's scheme by tasking Revan with finding a solution to drive the creatures away from Czerka's base near Jolee's residence on Kashyyyk. Jolee instructed Revan to pursue a non-violent approach to prevent the Wookiees from facing repercussions from Czerka. Revan uncovered Dern's secret method for deterring large predators from attacking his camp: sonic emitters. Revan then convinced the guards manning these emitters to deactivate them. This resulted in the arrival of a Terentatek, which forced Dern and his camp to evacuate. The fate of Dern and his crew remains uncertain.
Personality and traits
Dern was primarily motivated by financial gain, a characteristic shared by many Czerka employees. He was indifferent to the potential extinction of the tach population, prioritizing his personal enrichment above all else. He demonstrated a lack of concern for the well-being of his guards and fellow employees. He was willing to make an example of anyone attempting to desert their post and was known to execute those who disobeyed his commands. He was not easily swayed by deals or persuasion.
Behind the scenes
Within the game Knights of the Old Republic, players have the option to collaborate with Dern by poaching tach, earning credits and gaining dark side points. Alternative choices include intimidating Dern into shutting down his operation by eliminating all personnel and manipulating the Czerka guards into abandoning their stations, after which Dern executes the guards.
