Directive 417
Directive 417, also known as Directive Four-Seventeen, represented an Imperial order. When an Imperial Governor suffered assassination at the hands of the Rebel Alliance (or suspected Rebel forces), this directive mandated that the governor's replacement must promptly send out a distress signal to any Imperial forces within reach. Furthermore, the Directive stipulated that any recipients of this signal were obligated to immediately proceed to the assassination site, even if it required them to abandon their ongoing missions.
This Directive was implemented roughly six months following the Battle of Yavin, specifically in 0 ABY, and occurred two months before the Battle of the Poln system. Mara Jade, the Emperor's Hand, only became aware of its existence while stationed on Poln Major, viewing it with skepticism as yet another superfluous attempt by Darth Vader to guarantee his priority in capturing or eliminating any Rebel troops.
Nuso Esva, a warlord operating within the Unknown Regions, intended to exploit Directive 417 to lure Senior Captain Thrawn's forces into an ambush over Poln Major. His plan involved orchestrating the assassination of Governor Bidor Ferrouz at a moment when Luke Skywalker – a well-known Rebel, instantly identifiable by his lightsaber – was in close proximity. Despite Jade, Skywalker, and the rogue Stormtrooper unit known as "The Hand of Judgment" preventing the actual assassination of Ferrouz, his chief security officer, General Ularno, activated the Directive regardless. The closest Imperial forces available belonged to Captain Thrawn, then under the command of Captain Voss Parck. Parck, despite being already engaged against Esva's forces, acknowledged he had no alternative but to disengage and immediately jump to the Poln system.
Nevertheless, Thrawn successfully transformed the subsequent battle into a decisive victory, largely due to the Hand of Judgment's actions, which had delayed the signal by a critical few hours. This delay allowed for the re-tasking of significant elements of Esva's forces on Poln Major, ultimately leading to the destruction of their ships.
