Duel at the Jedi Praxeum

The confrontation at the Jedi Praxeum was a sparring session between Gantoris, the Praxeum's top pupil, and Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Master. Because Gantoris had managed to build a lightsaber, he considered himself a legitimate Jedi and immediately challenged his instructor to a battle.

Skywalker noticed Dark Side tendencies in Gantoris, who frequently attacked out of rage. The fight came to a stop when a creature native to Yavin 4 emerged from the foliage, diverting Gantoris' attention and enabling Skywalker to telekinetically seize Gantoris' lightsaber using the Force.

Background

Gantoris, previously the Human leader of an Eol Sha world's colony, grew impatient with Master Skywalker's perceived lack of direction in his Jedi training. Following the Force's guidance, specifically from Sith Lord Exar Kun, Gantoris constructed a dual-phase lightsaber using equipment from the abandoned Rebel Alliance base and three corusca gems discovered near one of the Massassi Temples. Ultimately, Gantoris challenged Skywalker to a duel, aiming to prove his Jedi worth and gain his teacher's respect for his abilities.

The Showdown

Skywalker felt uneasy knowing one of his students had already mastered lightsaber construction, but he still got ready to fight him. Gantoris initiated the attack with aggressive strikes, while Skywalker stayed on defense, guarding himself without launching his own attacks. Seeing the anger inside Gantoris, Skywalker tried the reverse form of Dun Möch he had used against his father, Darth Vader, trying to calm his student with peaceful words.

Skywalker was shocked when Gantoris used his surprise advantage—activating his lightsaber's dual-phase function, making the blade almost twice as long. The student swung wildly, cutting through the thick undergrowth to continue his attack, forcing Skywalker to use the Force to jump into a nearby tree.

Skywalker leaped from the tree and retreated into the undergrowth, sensing the distraction that would give him an edge. As Gantoris charged after him, a runyip suddenly darted from the bushes, diverting his attention. In that brief moment of lost focus, Skywalker used the Force to snatch the lightsaber from Gantoris' grip, ending the fight.

The Aftermath

Corran Horn, Streen, and the other trainees who had watched the duel were shocked when Skywalker gave Gantoris back his lightsaber, warning him to control his anger. Horn was particularly disturbed, fearing his fellow trainee might turn against others or try to fight Skywalker again.
